Luke Getsy is hungry to dive in. The
Raiders pick 13th in the NFL Draft, and they will have to decide whether to trade up to get a quarterback, select one where they’re at, or sign a veteran for their new offensive coordinator to work with.
“It’s obviously an impressive (draft class),” Getsy said on Friday. “I think there’s a lot of different flavors, and I think I’m going to have a lot of fun diving into it.”
Caleb Williams, Drake Make and Jayden Daniels are going to go quickly, with
Kirk Cousins being the top free-agent option for a Raiders team that wants to make a playoff push next season. Getsy said he and coach Antonio Pierce will build the offense around the strength of their quarterback and other top players.
“You always have to play into the players that you have, and your best players have to be the ones shining on Sunday,” Getsy said. “And so, it’s always about finding what everybody does best, and finding cool and unique ways to emphasize that every week.”
It starts with a physical mentality that Pierce wants.
“That’s going to be evident,” Getsy said. “I use that phrase, as an offense we want everyone to feel our film, we don’t just want them to see it and that’s going to be a big part of it. I think that’s where AP and I really hit it off.”
A key part of that offense will be receiver
Davante Adams, whom Getsy coached when he was the passing game coordinator with the
Packers before he went to the
Bears.
“When you’re working with a guy like Davante … I walked into a room as a young receivers coach and was really able to connect to him quickly,” Getsy said.
Getsy was a quarterback in college at Akron, and Adams has credited him with helping see the game through a quarterback’s eyes and how to find open space.
“He’s one of the most spatial-aware people I’ve ever been around,” Getsy said, “and someone who’s able to take information and make the most of it and that’s Tae. That ’16 season was really kind of the beginning of when he was ready to take off as a pro.”
Getsy, 40, is getting a quick second shot at being an offensive coordinator, as he was recently let go by the Bears. Chicago ranked second in
NFL in rushing attempts (31) and rushing yards (141) per game and improved from 28th to 20th in yardage in Getsy’s two years, but the passing never got going.
The
Patriots and
Saints also interviewed Getsy for their coordinator positions and the Raiders hired him (after Kliff Kingsbury changed his mind and went to Washington). That could indicate that some feel blame for the Bears’ struggles falls on quarterback Justin Fields’ shoulders more than Getsy’s.
Getsy was very complimentary of Fields on Friday.
“He’s one of the best human beings I’ve ever gotten to work with,” Getsy said. “It’s just the mentality that he brought every day, that consistent approach, the kind of man that he is. Just really, it was a blessing to work with him. And he was someone that just came to work every day to get better and better and I think he’ll continue to do so.”
It’s unlikely that the Raiders pursue Fields, though, as they look to bring in a rookie and/or veteran to compete with
Aidan O’Connell, who had had eight touchdown passes and no interceptions in his last four starts as a rookie last season.
“Without even knowing him or talking to him about anything yet, I could tell you right now that guy has got to be someone that prepares his butt off and is a great teammate,” Getsy said. “I mean, for the guys to rally around him the way that I saw from the outside looking in, and for him to go perform in the way that he did in the end of that season, that just speaks volumes. So, I’m excited to get to know him, excited to work with him for sure.”
Getsy grew up in Pittsburgh and enjoyed the
Steelers-Raiders rivalry, and “all the cool stuff that’s happened between these two organizations,” he said.
He added that he was drawn to the “family atmosphere” in the Raiders’ building when he walked in for his interview and met Pierce for the first time. “The energy, the enthusiasm that (Pierce) brings to work every single day was just something I was attracted to right away,” Getsy said.
Pierce had said that Getsy’s offense threw the Raiders off in the Week 5 meeting that the Bears won, and they watched that film together.
“We talked about the whys in what we were doing and how we were doing it,” Getsy said. “And I think all that stuff resonated with them, and I think they kind of talked about how we kind of exposed a few things that helped them turn into the defense that they turned into. I think the success that we had here last year from that point on was a little bit because of that.”
Now, the two will put their minds together and try to find a quarterback.
And hey, those two guys in the Super Bowl weren’t bad: Are there any more guys like
Patrick Mahomes and
Brock Purdy out there?
“It’s really important that you have some type of escape ability,” Getsy said. “You’ve got to be able to have the second chance and create the extended play, whether it’s just sliding in the pocket, or whether it’s extending it with your feet outside of the pocket.
“It was on display in the Super Bowl … that ability of both of those guys to create the second chance of the play is an important part in our league, and when you’re trying to go win games, you’ve got to be good on third down and in the red zone.”
