im looking at our team and here are our biggest needs from this vantage point

1. QB this is obvious and has been beaten into the ground
2. T - Gallery/Sims are ok but we need someone that can step up the play here
3. TE - we need one that can start and start soon
4. RDE - Brayton and Kelly can fill the position but I'd like to get a real pass rusher over here.
5. Depth at LB - even though weve got 5 LBs that I feel can play at a high level I'd like one great SLB to complement them... this may be a non need if we shift howard to SLB and see what bing can do starting at will
6. Depth at DB - As much as I like routt and cooper for thier potential and tenacity (respectively) I'd like a true SS on our team as well as one more good to great DB
7. RB - Jordan, Rhodes, and Fargas are a good start at RB and if Kiff uses them all to thier strengths then this isnt a need either... but adding someone like a Micheal Bush or Ricky Williams makes an OK group a stellar one.

1. RB: We have a couple nice backups, but no one that even resembles a feature back.

2. RDE: We have two guys who can get to the QB, but no one from the blind side. That's a real problem. Too great a need to put all our eggs in Huntley's basket.

3. WR: After this season, it's Curry and nobody. That can't be allowed to happen.

4. QB: We have one QB on the roster (ignoring the camp arms). That's obviously an issue.

5. TE: We brought in a decent blocker. Madsen is bulking up and may be a decent receiver. What we need is someone who can do a respectable job of both.

6. DT: Can Terd be a starter? Can Sapp maintain? Will Kelly ever be more than a wave player? Will Brayton grow into DT size and be effective? Could have easily made this a top 3 need. Probably should have.

7. DB: Another thing that could be listed higher. We have 4 good starters, but little else. I don't anticipate our nickle packages holding up when our offense keeps teams from going to playing clockball by halftime. We really shit the bed when we let Renaldo Hill leave.

8. OLB: May be a much greater need, as the spot opposite Thomas Howard is completely unsettled. Williams? Thomas? Bing? Will any of them emerge as a starting caliber linebacker? Will Grant Irons be back in the mix? Would it matter?

9. Offensive Line: Why so low? We have a herd of talented players who just need better coaching. There's a chance that most of those players are either ruined or bad fits for this scheme. I think we're a year away from knowing for sure.

Major Needs

1) RB - 3 backups, but no starter. This is the 1 position that would have the greatest impact this year. Get an All Pro type runner, and suddenly our OLine and QB positions see a major improvement... and with our defense, a 10 win season would be a realistic goal.

2) Entire OLine - I've never been on the Gallery bandwagon from day 1, so I can't wait to get rid of his cap number. I was on the Grove bandwagon, but it's getting harder to even support him. Walker is gone... so we've really never recovered from losing BRobb, Wiz, and Kennedy. Need some new blood and leadership. What we've done in FA is a good start, but I think we need to follow through in the draft.

3) QB - I could stomach taking Russell if we were to get a vet with a proven track record like Culpepper to groom him. Getting Rattay would make way too much sense. That's about as likely as us trading down to take Peterson.

4) DT - Going up against LT, LJ, and now Henry, we are going to need a lot more up front than we currently have.

Depth Issues

1) DE - ::knock on wood:: If Burgess were to get dinged, we're screwed. Need some more speed.

2) S - We'll see what happens with Huff... but I'd like to see us invest a li'l more in this position.

3) LB - We've done a great job of developing some players here... lets keep in going.

Not Concerned About

1) TE - We have personel to implement the 3-WR spread offense, so a TE is not as big of a concern in my opinion.

2) WR - Curry, Moss, Porter, and Gabriel. Best set of WR's in the league. Even 3 out of the 4 is damn good.

1) Qb
2) T
3)te
4)rde
5)rb
6)wr
7)dt

1. RB/QB/TE/OL
2. WR/DE/DT
So we have a very good fullback in Griffith at least, and Curry is nails healthy. Cooper Carlisle is going to be a solid starter and maybe J.Newb is healthy. Shit that was two "if healthy's" already...

Other than those players there's alot of questions.. Is Andrew Walter still deserving of a shot to be the starter. Should he be accountable for last year, do we need a franchise QB right now or could he still be that guy? Are Gallery and Grove busts? Whats going to happen with Moss? Is Porter a reliable guy who we trust again? Can any tight end on this team block or catch? How do Boothe and McUg's fit in cable's plans. Is Lamont Jordan worthy of being a starter in this offense? Who is going to be the #1 WR after next season when moss and porter are gone?

We could go anyway in this draft as long as we use a good # of picks on offense. I think we need bodies competeing in every offensive positon. The only two spots we need to fill on defense are DT and DE. We dont need another OLB we have Rob Thomas and Bing as back-ups. Stu is way more solid than most of our offensive guys so he is fine too. And Fabs, Namdi, Routte is a solid nickel package.

I think we obviously need a guy who can be a NFL superstar at #1. Its clear I personally think Adrian Peterson adn Calvin Johnson are cant miss picks. JaMarcus Russell is in a close third because QB's are so hard to judge. Its harder to predict good QB's than any other position thats why guys like Tom Brady exsist who is the best in the game with 3 rings. But if Kiffin and Knapp and Al think JR is worth the risk then so be it, ill trust them. Lets face it if we all think our guys we pimp can be superstars that then none of us our wrong to lobby for them. The interesting thing is going to be the second pick. Thats going to be almost as tough as the #1 to pick. Their will most likely be a starting DE,TE,WR,OL and DT sitting there. Which way do we go? Im guessing which ever player is rated the highest, not whichever one the team feels is the strongest need to fill.

That's some damn funny homerism ya got there.

Better than:

4. QB: We have one QB on the roster (ignoring the camp arms). That's obviously an issue.

Being number 4 on your list...

Back up QBs aren't a higher priority than starting caliber RBs, pass rushers, or starting caliber pass catchers.

It is when you have the dogshit we have on our roster. I am also of the opinion that a franchise back can alleviate a lot of problems on the offensive side of the ball. If we're not going to draft either Russell or Brady, then we should trade down a few notches and nab AP then draft a QB in the second.

AP + Stanton/Edwards > CJ + Stanton/Edwards

I'm not sold on Stanton or Edwards anymore after watching more of their old games. Edwards has too far to come in terms of velocity, and Stanton is the very definition of streaky.

It's not like we have a ton of options if we pass on Russell and Quinn. There's barely anything available in FA.

Fixing the Leinert Error and throwing Shell under the bus

...pundits from coast to coast, so-called draft gurus and everyone with an opinion are convinced they know which direction Raiders managing general partner Al Davis is leaning.

Yet, the only empirical, anecdotal evidence comes from the year-end, hit-the-pavement, exit-interview given by Davis to coach Art Shell. During the lengthy tongue lashing delivered to Shell on Jan.5, Davis accused Shell of persuading Davis to bypass USC quarterback Matt Leinart with the seventh pick of last year's draft, according to an eyewitness.

"Knowing what we know now, should you have told us to pick Leinart over Huff?" Davis asked Shell, according to Danny More, Shell's longtime agent. "You set this franchise back 10 years. Now I have to fix it."

Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Raider, it's a QB.

No mercy.

Gawd I like him (very creepy man-crush).

Well ultimately it's AL's fault for not bringing in a legitimate coaching candidate and letting Shell persuade him into hiring the Barefoot Contessa as his OC.. Al's historically gone the bargain basement route for bringing in QB's anyway so I can't believe this was all Shell's doing.

I agree with Turk.

Al is partly to blame for not getting a legit coach in here. Tom Walsh and Shell?

Yuck.

We can take a big step in turning this team around on Saturday...I cant wait.

He sure is a beautiful boy, Mrs. Raider

Dear lord,
If the ear humping mouth breathing Donkeys give away two drafts for CJ, please let him fail utterly and "set the organization back ten years".

Per PFT

BRONCOS WANT JOHNSON

A reader tells us that there's a rumor being reported on 950 AM in Denver that the Broncos are trying to make a play for the No. 2 overall pick in the draft, in an effort to land receiver Calvin Johnson.

A source with knowledge of the discussions tells us that the rumor is dead-on accurate, and that an offer has been made by the Broncos to the Lions.

Per the rumor and based on what we've heard, the Broncos have offered their first-round, second-round, and third-round pick in the 2007 draft and their first-rounder in 2008 for the No. 2 spot.

The Lions, we're told, are concerned that the No. 21 overall spot would put them too low to land one of the players whom they covet. The Lions' goal in trading down is/has been to get more picks, and to still get one of the players they want, but at a lower salary slot.

So the deal might hinge on the ability of the Lions to line up another deal that would allow them to move back up a bit.

The Broncos hold the No. 21 overall pick in round one, the No. 56 overall pick (No. 24 in round two), and the No. 70 and No. 86 overall picks (No. 6 and No. 23, respectively, in round two). We don't know which of the third-rounders has been offered.

Under the trade chart, the deal might favor the Lions. But different teams value picks from the next year's draft differently; some teams downgrade the points by a full round, making a 2007 first-rounder the equivalent of a 2008 secon-rounder. The other problem here is that no one will know where the Broncos draft in round one until the 2007 season ends.

The entire deal would be contingent on the Raiders not drafting Calvin Johnson with the No. 1 overall pick. We're currently told that the Raiders are expected to strike a deal on a contract with quarterback JaMarcus Russell before Saturday. :D

However, the fact that former Raiders coach/current Broncos coach Mike Shanahan apparently has a bee in his butt for Johnson could cause Raiders owner Al Davis to think twice about whether he would prefer to have Johnson on his team -- or to have to face him twice per year.

Shannahan knows his window is closing to win the SB and retire. I could see this happening. What else is he going to throw up at Scrabble and Fabs? Shannahan to retire in 2008 jihad to begin..... now.

wow.

Also could be more hardball posturing to get the Raiders to swap their pick to a different CJ-enamored club. As the NFL turns!

I don't know. Rat boy has mortgaged the house (the salaries paid out to FA's)already and I bet now he cashes in the Life insurance policy (Two #1 draft picks and all of the 2007 draft) to make a push. He's got to get better than the Patriots/Colts to go back and retire on top. I could seee that he thinks CJ might be the missing link.

Either way 0 Rat boy will not be the one cleaning up after himself on this one. Look at their 2007 movements:

Daniel Graham TE
Travis Henry RB
Kyle Johnson RB
Alvin McKinley DT
Quincy Morgan WR
Kenny Peterson DE
Patrick Ramsey QB
Cecil Sapp RB
Paul Smith RB
Brandon Stokley WR

Not a young crew.
