Raiders | Asomugha named to All-Pro second team
Tue, 9 Jan 2007 21:55:55 -0800
Raiders.com reports Oakland Raiders CB Nnamdi Asomugha was named to the Associated Press' All-Pro second team as a starting cornerback. Asomugha received the third-most votes among all NFL cornerbacks. He finished the season with 50 tackles, eight interceptions and one sack.

Hopefully he continues to do this throughout his career. I can still remember Big58's comments about him..."worst starting CB in the league..."

Honestly, he's been getting props all year. St. Louis' offensive coordinator was quoted as calling Nnamdi "the best in the league" and he made both Dr. Z and Peter King's All-Pro squads.

He also got some serious praise from Chad Johnson of CIN, who said something along the lines of Scrabble being in the top 3 CB's.

Well hopefully we start locking up some of our young guns, i.e. Aso, Morrison, Howard, Curry, Burgess to long term deals.

He will be there next YEAR!!!! Just watch

Oh this isn't a good thing from KFFL 'Hot off the Wire'...

Raiders | Asomugha could void deal after 2007
Mon, 15 Jan 2007 11:43:08 -0800

Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports Oakland Raiders CB Nnamdi Asomugha's contract with the team, though runs through the 2008 season, can be voided at his request after the 2007 season if he meets a playing time minimum. Asomugha is scheduled to earn $730,000 in 2007 and $820,000 in 2008.

I'm not even worried about this. Odds are we go into free agency this year with somewhere between $25 to $35 million in cap space. We'll strike out on the big fish spend a little bit of coin on some little fish and then burn a lot of our 2007 cap space signing Aso to a contract extension. He'll get a big roster bonus instead of a signing bonus.

Imnot worried either. he hasn't bitch atall and he doesn't seem unhappy here in oakland.

I'm worried... after all we're the same team that failed to extend a productive Rod Coleman before he reached his FA year... Matter of fact, when was the last time we extended a guy instead of allowing him to hit free agency?....

"Aso, there's some guy named Charles on the phone. He wants to explain to you the financial benefits of being franchised for a couple of years in a row..."

Barry Sims?:D But wasn't Rod pretty adamant about leaving Oak anyway?

Yes, Rod said before free agency even started that he wanted to move back east.

As for being worried about Aso, you bet your ass I'm worried about it. When defending Art Shell, Aso said words to the effect of (since I'm too tired to go look them up) "Let him have a chance. I'm tired of constantly rebuilding."

If the Raiders don't have a good year this year, I wouldn't be surprised to see Nnamdi look for a contender to play for... and get paid through the nose to do it.

Granted, I don't have a shred of evidence supporting my theory, but I think had we approached Hot Rod the year BEFORE he could void his deal, I think we could have had him signed long term... We had just come off winning 4 straight AFCWest titles, a trip to the Super Bowl and Rod had just led all DT's in sacks... I think he was a pretty happy camper at that point... I don't think he became disillusioned with the franchise til everything went to crap in Calahan's final year...

I think Nnamdi is in the same boat... If we're proactive and lock him up now instead of waiting till he voids his deal after this coming year, I think we have a better chance of getting a deal done.... There is something to be said for rewarding guys that rise from afterthought to all pro level through hard work ala Rod and Nnamdi...

We quietly locked Lechler and Jano up to extensions a few years back. Did the same with Curry but his injury two years ago resulted in his deal being changed last year. Otherwise he would be signed long-term. But the sad truth is we really haven't had many guys coming off their rookie deals that were worth extending.

I'm not worried about Aso because for the 1st time in the free agent era we've got excess money to spend. We're $14.1 million under next years cap and thats with about $20 to $25 million in bullshit roster bonuses on the books for guys like Sims, Brooks, Curry, Jordan and a few others. I'm even thinking Huff has a huge roster bonus due him as part of the $15 million that was guaranteed him last year and when we pro-rate that another $5 or $6 million gets freed up.

Al Davis always spends his cap money. Once the issues with those roster bonuses are cleared up I'm thinking Al will have at least $30+ million heading into to free agency. The problem will be finding guys worthy of spending that money on that will take Al's money instead of some other team's money. So when free agency ends and we've got a surplus of unused cap space the 1st guy thats going to benefit from that is Aso. I'm guessing he'll get a deal similar to whatever Asante Samuel gets.
