ESPN's John Clayton reports that the Colts have signed Dwight Freeney to a six-year, $72 million with a $30 million signing bonus.

Anyone honestly believe that Al would, or is even capable of matching those kind of numbers once DB starts looking for a new deal?

burgess, while he has better production doesn't have freeney's hype. We'll extend him this year for something much more modest then that. Same with Nnamdi hopefully.

Hopefully is my new favorite word this year.

Damn, maybe we should have signed Burgess to something alittle extra already :(

Is his contract up after this season?

I think it is up after 2009. Wonder what Burgess is looking for...I like that he has kept it in house.

2007 1500000.00
2008 2000000.00
2009 2000000.00

When we signed him, this was a generous contract (something in the range of 5 years for $17M or so) for a guy coming off of two or three years of injuries and only playing for about 29 total games over a 4 year stretch. Now that he's proven himself both durable and productive, there are rumblings that he'll make a stink if he doesn't get a bigger contract. With any luck we can get him extended out to around 2012 within a reasonable salary (backloaded with the bonus to satisfy him), and get Aso extended before the season starts, since he either is up after the season or can opt out if he likes.

If we're talking about a new deal in 09 when his current one expires, I'd probably pass since he'll already be 31 years old... I certainly think he's earned a pretty good sized bump in salary as an extension as Yoda alluded to, but with the way the wheels tend to fall off speed rushers once they hit 30, I wouldn't want to do anything real crazy...

It's absolutely nuts that the Colts are handing over that kind of salary bonus to a player coming off a down year perfromance wise...

I think we are in a position to restructure his contract using the existing three years left. We have pretty much rid ourselves of dead cap money for the future and the salary cap space will be increased next year.

When asked about a holdout during minicamp by one reporter, Burgess blew him off and pretty much, not verbatim, said it was a non-issue. He is a team guy and I think we can make both sides happy, in my opinion.

Hope you're right AP, and yes, the Colts are crazy. New England would never have offered that contract, to that player, at this time. Something tells me that the train in Indy will derail much more rapidly than the train in New England....

Clearly I should have been a football player. They make a lot of cheese.

One thing that is kind of interesting. We are paying our head coach a nice contract while we are still paying Art Shell the remainder of his contract...I think. We created a few more administrative positions in our front office. We are still paying Jackie Slater and one or two more coaches who have not found jobs. That money doesn't count on the salary cap but we appear to be spending freely considering we have Jamarcus to sign.

Typical Raiders...we have no idea what the structure in the front office really is. We speculate but WTF? Lombardi got shown the door. Who's the bean counter as respects the salary cap? Do we really know who's running this show bedsides Al? Sometimes I wonder if Al stiffed Shell for the balance of his contract ala Shanarat. Hehehe. Gotta love it.

Hey, Raiders Mystique, Baby! :D

If you add up all the franchise tags Woodson received when we kept tagging him... and you take into account how much the salary cap (as well as the franchise tag numbers) have increased and will continue to increase... and you look at the kind of bonuses that went out to third tier toilet players in free agency this year, I really think $30 million is the going rate for a franchise player signing bonus.

Being a defense-first groupie, I like the fact that a DE is making franchise money. I'd like to see some LBs hit that number. I don't think any CB is worth that (though I'm sure we'll see some CB hit that number very soon)...

This is also some damn good news for us L.A. Raider jihadists. There's no way Davis is going to pay Jamarcus, Burgess, Aso, Sapp, and eventually some of these LBs out of an Oaktown payroll. Stock up on your 'Oakland Raider' parafinalia while they last.

What a great f'n day!

Wonder how much Al's going to cough up for all those L.A.Raiders@ email addresses I've been collecting. :D

I think it is Rich Snead who was with the Titans or Mark Jackson. My money would be on Jackson since he and Kiffin are close and he negotiated the trade that brought us Mike Williams and Josh McCown. LOL at Al stiffing Shell.

I would like to see the revenue sharing numbers.

I have no issue with losing Nandi if he wants big time dollars. But I'd much rather keep Burgess if possible.

Aso probably has at least 5 more good/great years in him then Burgess. That's why my top priority would be to re-sign him. Burgess is UNDER contract. If his renegotiation demands get too rich for the organization then I would trade him rather then overpay him. Now if he was 2 or 3 years younger it might be a different story but since he's closing in on 30 no way would I pay him premier money for a guy who plays a position where the elite players historically decline sometime in their early 30s.

I didn't realize we were still paying off Shell (and some others?).:o
But , Bones, I love the motto "Raiders Mystique"
May have to make that my signature!:D

I dont think his demands will get too wild. But he does deserve top tier money more than Aso. So if it came down to who gets the better offer, Easily give it to Burgess.
