Gabriel traded to Patriots

September 2nd, 2006
The Raiders traded a wide receiver Saturday, but not the one you might expect.

Doug Gabriel, who had assumed the starting position from Jerry Porter, was traded to the New England Patriots, a team spokesman said. He did not yet have the compensation.

Gabriel, in his fourth year out of Central Florida, had 37 receptions for 554 yards and three touchdowns last season. He had 33 receptions for 551 yards and two touchdowns in 2004.

The Patriots, with starting receiver Deion Branch in a rancorous holdout, were in the market for a receiver. The Seattle Seahawks were reportedly interested in dealing for Branch.

Gabriel’s departure would seem to leave the door open for Porter, who has requested a trade, to move back into the starting lineup.

More details as they emerge . . .

Gonna miss Gab. I always liked him..the guy will probably shine now that he's with a team that has a good QB who will get him the ball in the right spots. Dude could really flurish. He's probably happy as hell.

Thanks Gab...good luck.

You gotta believe Porter is out of the dog house or something like that.

Assuming that we receive a third round pick as a compensatory draft pick, it is going to be interesting....especially since we have a couple more players that may be traded today.

Nicely said Bones.

That opens a spot for Buchanon and gives Morant a few more catches than what he expected this season. I liked Gabriel both on the field and off of it.

Doug Gabriel traded to Patriots

The Raiders traded a wide receiver Saturday, but it wasn't Jerry Porter. They sent Doug Gabriel to New England for an as-yet-undisclosed draft choice.

We all knew there would be some surprises today, as the team gets from 75 to 53 players, but this one was a shocker. Gabriel had been starting throughout the preseason, and coach Art Shell never voiced any complaints about his play (which, to be honest, was inconsistent).

Gabriel's former teammates seemed equally surprised by the move. Johnnie Morant, when informed, put his hand to his mouth, widened his eyes and retreated into the bathroom to compose his thoughts.

"(He was) doing great," Ronald Curry said. "He got better and better every year since I got here. Seemed like he took coaching well, but I guess they did what they thought was best for the team."

Curry insisted trading Gabriel had nothing to do with him, but I think he's wrong. If the Raiders weren't confident Curry was healthy and ready to contribute, they wouldn't have had the luxury of dealing Gabriel. It also could signal that Shell is ready to reintroduce Porter into the mix.

Stay tuned.

Elsewhere, the Raiders had not announced their cuts by the time we got locker-room access to players. But tight end John Madsen, defensive end Kevin Huntley and running back ReShard Lee all confirmed that they made the roster. Running back Rod Smart and fullback Zach Tuiasosopo had cleared out their lockers.

Patriots deal for Raiders wide receiver Gabriel

John Clayton

The Oakland Raiders made the first surprise move of Saturday's final cut day by trading starting wide receiver Doug Gabriel to the New England Patriots for an undisclosed draft choice.

Gabriel started five preseason games ahead of Jerry Porter and is considered to be a good, young receiver on the rise. The interesting part of the trade is how it plays into the Deion Branch holdout in New England.

The Patriots have been offered second-round choices by the Jets and the Seahawks but Friday's deadline for Branch being able to make a deal passed without anything happening. Branch filed two complaints with the NFLPA over the failed trade. The first one was because Branch feels the Patriots breached a verbal contract. The second charges that the Patriots did not negotiate in good faith.

The Patriots lost starting wide receiver David Givens to the Titans in free agency and the Branch holdout leaves them short on receivers.

The other interesting part of this trade is where it puts Porter, who has been in Art Shell's doghouse. Porter, who asked to be traded, lost his starting job. In the preseason finale against the Seahawks last Thursday, Porter was running third team and closing out the game in the final minutes.

I hate this move.

Now we're stuck hoping that either Porter quits acting like a punk and/or Curry overcomes some serious injury questions. We're not a deep at WR as some people think IMO.

I'm not real fond of this move either. Gab probably is like I mentioned. He could really come of age getting out of this mess in Oakland and away from these shitty QB's. Having Brady throwing to him is a formula for success. I think we're going to see Gabriel break out in NE.

There is a Boston sportscaster who mentioned he believes it is a fifth round pick and this guy also believes it to be a fifth round pick but take it for what it is worth....

Patriots acquire WR Gabriel from Oakland

Paul Perillo

With the Deion Branch situation still far from a resolution, the Patriots acquired wide receiver Doug Gabriel from the Oakland Raiders on Saturday in exchange for a fifth-round pick.

In an effort to bolster a wide receiving corps that is in turmoil with the Deion Branch situation, as well as the slow start by rookie Chad Jackosn, the Patriots acquired wide receiver Doug Gabriel from the Oakland Raiders on Saturday. The Patriots have confirmed the deal, which was first reported in the Oakland Tribune but the initial report did not indicate what the Patriots gave up in the trade. However, it is believed New England sent a fifth-round pick to Oakland in return.

Gabriel appeared poised to take advantage of Jerry Porter’s contentious relationship with the team and was slotted into the starting lineup alongside Randy Moss before the trade. Gabriel is in his fourth season out of Central Florida and had 37 catches for 554 yards and three touchdowns last year, almost identical numbers to the ones the 6-2, 215-pound wideout posted in 2004 (33-551-2). He also has some kick return experience, averaging 21.8 yards on 86 career returns.

A fifth round draft pick?

Holy shit, if that's true we got screwed with no Vaseline™.

That would seriously blow. WTF? Is Al losing his touch? They were talking about as high as a third now the word is a 5gth? Crap. I'm totally pissed if it's true.

Bah! I liked Gabriel, but always hoped his hands would get better. While he improved in every other aspect as a receiver he still had pretty damned clumsy hands.

He already had come of age here. And I personally don't think the Golden Child will improve those hands of his any. We'll see. But seriously though. Punt returns, how often did he muff the thing? Regularly. His hands are not great and haven't gotten any better.

I didn't take the time to read through all the articles, but I don't think it hinges on Porter playing nice. I think it's all because Morant got his s#!t together. Dude has infinitely better hands than Gabriel, and I think he's right in line with Moss as far as hands go (that's very good but not great). Curry easily has the best hands on the squad. I think Moss is a little worse because of his natural talent - he drops some because he doesn't concentrate, and I think Morant is similar. Porter is not as nifty as the other three - ever see him do that over/under silent clapping thing on a ball? Whooops.

Porter isn't out of the doghouse, but he'll get some PT. If we do lots of deep routes, guys ARE going to get tired, offense and defense. Fresh legs will kill the opposition eventually. Yeeeeeehhhhaaaaaaa!

Gabriel dealt to Patriots; QB George misses cut

Bruce Adams

Sunday, September 3, 2006

Doug Gabriel, who started all five of the Raiders' exhibition games at wide receiver, has been traded to the New England Patriots.

The move was announced Saturday -- the same day that saw the abrupt end of Jeff George, the sequel.

The team had to cut its roster to the NFL-mandated 53 players, and Gabriel and veteran quarterback George were among the departed.

Gabriel, who went through the preseason as the No. 2 receiver behind Randy Moss, was traded for future unspecified draft considerations.

The most significant veteran player cut was Danny Clark, who started at middle linebacker the last two years and had been moved to backup this year.

"He gave us everything he had," coach Art Shell said. "He's a true professional."

One of the day's other surprises was the release of Ryan Riddle, a sixth-round pick out of Cal in 2005. Riddle had made several big plays on special teams in the preseason and was preparing for more playing time at linebacker.

The release of George, who was with the Raiders in 1997 and '98 and hadn't thrown a pass in an NFL game since 2001, was significant in that it reflects Shell's increased confidence in backup Andrew Walter, who had missed some practice time and the Raiders' exhibition win over the Detroit Lions with a sore shoulder.

Shell said he felt much better about Walter's health than he had a week ago -- noting once again that George was brought in just Tuesday as a precaution.

Veteran players cut included guard Kelvin Garmon, cornerback Duane Starks and running back Rod Smart, best known for wearing "He Hate Me" on the back of his jersey during his career in the old XFL.

Players selected in this year's draft who were released Saturday included wide receiver Kevin McMahan and center Chris Morris. Both were seventh-round selections and McMahan was this year's "Mr. Irrelevant" -- the honorary title given the last player taken in the draft.

Some of those cut could be re-signed for the eight-man practice squad after a 24-hour period to pass waivers.

The roster is now set for the regular-season opener Sept. 11 against the San Diego Chargers at the Coliseum. Or is it?

"It could change, it could remain the same," Shell said.

The Gabriel trade was initiated by the Patriots.

"There was an interest," Shell said. "We had enough receivers we felt we could part with him."

The trade follows the return of a healthy Ronald Curry, who rejoined the team at training camp Aug. 22 after missing chunks of the past two years with Achilles tendon injuries.

Gabriel, who had four catches for 51 yards in the preseason, was going into his fourth year with the Raiders, with a career total of 71 receptions for 1,122 yards and five touchdowns. He had 86 kickoff returns for 1,850 yards. Last year he was No. 4 on the team with 37 receptions for 554 yards and three touchdowns.

Other players released Saturday included linebacker Ricky Brown, wide receiver Will Buchanon, offensive tackle Jabari Levey, defensive end Bryant McNeal, defensive tackle Rashad Moore, offensive tackle William Obeng, fullback Zach Tuiasosopo and defensive tackle Donnell Washington.

Placed on injured reserve, and not counting against the roster limit, were linebacker Darnell Bing (neck), wide receiver Carlos Francis (hamstring), tight end O. J. Santiago (heel) and defensive back Alvin Nnabuffe (ankle).

Gabriel, who went through the preseason as the No. 2 receiver behind Randy Moss, was traded for future unspecified draft considerations.

Maybe a bit of good news from the article above. It appears to me, that it may be a conditional pick from the wording. Maybe it is no lower than a fifth but with the possibility of a higher pick should Gabriel flourish in their system.....I don't know. What do you guys think?

Well these guys also say a fifth..

Patriots pick up a receiver

By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff | September 3, 2006

Unable to come to a resolution with holdout wide receiver Deion Branch, the Patriots added to their receiving corps yesterday by trading a fifth-round draft choice for Doug Gabriel.

Gabriel, who played the past three seasons with the Oakland Raiders, was scheduled to arrive in town this morning. The 26-year-old wideout entered the league in 2003 as a fifth-round draft choice and has 71 career catches for 1,122 yards and five touchdowns. He should be in contention for a starting role, and also has experience as a kickoff returner.

``Doug is very excited about the trade," said Bus Cook, Gabriel's agent. ``He thinks it's a great career move, being with Tom Brady and that offense."

The 6-foot-2 -inch, 215-pound Gabriel, who is signed though the 2007 season, adds a different dimension to the receiving group with his size and speed. He should help one of the team's key needs, the outside passing game, as he has averaged 15.8 yards per catch. In Oakland, Gabriel was part of a receiving group that included Randy Moss, Jerry Porter , and Ronald Curry.

The acquisition could affect the team's willingness to trade Branch, who received contract offers from the Seahawks and Jets in the one-week period allotted for him to negotiate with other clubs.

The Patriots also made a handful of moves yesterday to reach the league's 53-man roster limit.

Safety Tebucky Jones, who injured his right hamstring Aug. 26 against the Redskins, was placed on injured reserve, meaning he's out for the season. He is the third special teams player, following Mel Mitchell and Barry Gardner, to suffer a season-ending injury.

Meanwhile, offensive tackle Randy Hand, wide receiver Kelvin Kight, safety Guss Scott, center/guard Dan Stevenson, inside linebacker Corey Mays, defensive end Santonio Thomas, cornerback Antwain Spann, center/guard Billy Yates , and defensive lineman Dan Klecko were released.

Most of those can return on the eight-man practice squad -- which can be put together today -- if they aren't claimed on waivers by another club.

The team also placed running back Patrick Pass on the physically unable to perform list, making him eligible to return after the sixth week of the season.

The Patriots kept 25 players on offense (which includes Branch, who doesn't count against the roster limit because he hasn't reported to camp), and 26 on defense, to go with kicker Stephen Gostkowski, punter Josh Miller , and long snapper Lonie Paxton.

I think the Pats got a good deal if they gave up only a fifth. Remember it's likely to be a low #5 based on the Pats probable record.

I think I said it all here. Some better players went for only a 4th rounder. At this time of the season it seems to be the going rate, conditions applied. It's why the asking price for Porter didn't fly. Sure there are some receiving poor teams out there, but they're in the minority.

This trade doesn't bother me that much. It always sucks to see a player you had high hopes for traded, but the Raiders must like what they are seeing from Curry and Morant so that is a positive.

The 5th round pick bothered me at first, but looking at what other teams are getting for players with better resumes than Gabriel and it looks to be right in line, hopefuly it is a conditional pick and Gabriel can perform well enough to get it to a 4th.
