Chris Landry is a veteran NFL scout who has worked with the Cleveland Browns and Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans and worked with the Indianapolis Scouting Combine. He now runs his own scouting consulting business in which he analyzes NFL and college personnel for NFL teams and helps NFL and college teams in their coaching evaluations and searches.

This guy is from Louisana and this is word I got. This is solid and from Landry himself.

He on numerous occassions offered to bring in Russell into his own home to help him on study NFL films to prepare him for his next level. Apparently he said he would but has'nt shown up.

Another take?

Dudes a pothead. Comes from inside the NFL scouts and (Landy himself) and is a well known fact inside the NFL circles the dude likes to blow fatties on weekends. NFL scouts have tagged him as lazy and a guy looking to cash in.

Word is he's someone that is not committed and a very, very dangerous pick.

Yuck.

As of this moment, I've got CJ stable at the one spot, AP stable at two, Quinn climbing into a dead heat with Russell...

Should be an interesting stretch run.

Screw JR then I don't want no Pot Smoking, Fat Albert wannabe, Fallin and I can't get up. For our QB.

Bring in (Quinn Now baby) our a vet that can Push Walter...

The Oakland Raiders select Calvin Johnson Wr Georgia tech #1 Overall. The best player in this draft.

Smoke = Fire.

I don't doubt any of this for a second. And I don't doubt that the Raiders are off this guy.

DRAFT BUZZ: The Raiders returned from the NFL Scouting Combine less convinced that Louisiana State QB JaMarcus Russell is their man for the top pick and with more questions than before after taking a long look at him during the process. Publicly, the Raiders said nothing about Russell or any of the other players who attended the Combine. Privately, several Raider officials questioned Russell's work ethic, said they are concerned about his weight as a long-term issue, and cautioned against making Russell a lead-pipe cinch as the top pick. It now appears just as likely that the Raiders will target Georgia Tech WR Calvin Johnson in light of his posting a 4.31-second 40-yard dash and saying all the right things during an interview.
That quote is having more meaning with each passing hour/day.

Chris Landry has had a beef with Russell for awhile now.

On another note Landry is supposedly good friends with Nick Saban. This was his take on Saban when all those rumors about him leaving Miami where out there.

So, no, Saban's not super happy. If he had Brees, he just might be a Super Bowl contender. However, Landry said there's no way Saban is leaving Miami, and Landry should know. The veteran NFL scout worked with Saban in Cleveland, played a key role in LSU's hiring of Saban and now runs his own scouting/consulting business in which he analyzes pro and college personnel for NFL teams. One of his clients, predictably, is the Miami Dolphins, and Landry insists Saban has no intention of walking away from the NFL after just two seasons.

"From a football/organization standpoint, his situation is perfect and he knows it," Landry said. "He's got what he wants. It's a chance of a lifetime. He'll have success. He took a team with six-win personnel last year and won nine games. He's doing a good job in my opinion. They're an old team that he's trying to rebuild. That challenge kind of drives him. There's no question he'll have success in Miami and he'll be given the time he needs to have it."

Then after Saban left.

"I think he's hurt his reputation big time," said NFL scout and personnel consultant Chris Landry, who worked under Saban as a scout with the Cleveland Browns in the 1990s. "He's absolutely lost respect in the NFL. He's being perceived as a quitter, and I can't argue that. He's hurt himself significantly. I know he's disappointed me. He's close to becoming the Larry Brown of football. I mean, how stable is he? What's his deal? He should've finished his job. This is just not the Nick I know."

I got a kick out of it at the time.

I don't care what he smokes as long as he shows up on Sunday, cares, and plays well. At the same time, though, I don't believe this yet.

Don't they do drug tests at the combine....

Don't they, though? I think of Luis Castillo testing positive for steroids. Maybe you can sit out that drill? :p

I wouldn't get too worked up about anything coming out of Landry. There have been NUMEROUS Landry/Russell stories almost all of them negative. There is some doubt as to whether this Landry guy is a scout at all. Anything coming from Landry isn't credible.

I've heard ...

Pot is one of the easiest drugs to filter out of your system. It takes 48 hours if you have the right supplements. So if you know a test is coming....

The bitch is when you don't get 48 hours notice anymore (ask Ricky Williams).
Also, you mujst have a certain level of THC in your sytem for it to register. Thus Moss' "from time to time" comment. The basic rule is one joint a month won't give you a positive.

I don't know if this kind of heresay is enough to knock a guy on... If I understand it correctly only a handful of teams subscribe to Landry's service... Like the Patriots, we don't subscribe to any of the private sector services...

In 1983, there were all kind of rumors running around that a certain QB had a dope problem, scored too low on the Wunderlick, ran too slow of a 40 and was questioned about his dedication to the game... He dropped like a stone right into our laps and we picked a freakin center instead...

Once we do our due diligence on Russell and if the concerns are validated, I'd have no problem taking Quinn instead...

I'm young, was that guy Marino?

I'm young, was that guy Marino?

Yeah.

Oh, and ask Warren Sapp about pot rumors. Sorry, I know too many pro athletes to be scared off by pot.

Boy, considering how Russell never made it over to Landry's house, Landry sure knows a lot about his personal habits.

After thinking about this some more, though...

Don't take any of this the wrong way, I'm not calling out anyone in particular, but ask yourselves: don't we do this with pretty much every black quarterback who is from the South? Don't these accusations of "lazy" and such come up? Why?

Remember Vince Young last year? Same shit. I fell victim to it, subconsciously.

And I'm not just throwing out "the race card" or some shit. It's more subliminal than that. It doesn't have to do with skin color per se.

It has to do with mannerisms, demeanor, speech, and so forth.

Dude is from the South.

How many of these critics calling out his "work ethic" and "motivation" and "love of the game" and shit are familiar with the way someone from Russell's environment usually presents himself compared to someone from Quinn's background and environment?

They're different presentations but neither necessarily means anything about someone's drive to excel.

Take PFW's magazine's take on Russell:

Upside: Looks every bit the part with rare size and arm strength. Is bigger than a lot of defensive ends and can brush off the rush. Has a power arm, the best pure arm in the draft, and can thread the ball into tight windows, shred zones and nearly throw it the length of the field. Natural thrower who flicks it with ease. Can make every NFL throw–even off-balance, falling backward and throwing across his body. Throws with great velocity. Has a 25-4 career record as a starter and is a winner. Nice follow-through. Can pick up speed and be a load to bring down once he gets moving. Superstrong in the pocket and can take a big hit and still keep his balance and get rid of the ball.

Downside: Can learn to throw with better touch. Does not have great footwork and relies too much on his big arm, making bad decisions trying to force the ball into tight spots. Could be more careful with the football and loses his grip on it too much. Does not have great anticipation or timing, and he throws behind receivers on crossing routes. Does not have a great feel for where pressure is coming from and can hold on to the ball for too long. Not a great worker and may not have the mental makeup that is so critical to succeeding at the QB position.

The Way We See It: The most naturally gifted quarterback in the draft, Russell is a great fit for a vertical passing game like the Raiders, but he will likely require some time to adapt to an NFL offense and will need to be groomed slowly. Boom-or-bust potential.

Mental makeup? Where is this shit coming from? 'Cause he talks with a Louisiana twang and generally has a Southern demeanor? What are people talking about? Is there anything in particular? Because I haven't seen anyone point anything out yet. Give me specifics.

As far as "naturally gifted," coupled with the criticism of his work ethic, it just seems like some people think this guy rolled out of the womb and was throwing touchdown passes. Like he hasn't worked at all.

Lindy's has a different take, FWIW:

Intangibles: A mature, confident, lead-by-example type. While he's not a vocal leader, Russell has command of the huddle. A quiet sort who seems to shy away from the media, Russell will put in the extra hours in the film room and takes well to constructive coaching.

You bring up an interesting point Donovan. When people question JaMarcus Russell's dedication and football smarts you have to take into account that "Southern" stereotype.

I have to wonder how Kenny Stabler would of been perceived if he was being drafted today?

Good post, Donovan. That is quite a valid point, if you ask me.

I hate all this pre-draft bullshit that goes on, whether the dude really smokes weed or not.

He has the body shape of a stoner :D You never know whats true and whats not. Its a huge gamble having the #1 overall.
