I was watching Total Access(that's on the NFL Network Hboy :D ) and Schefter was talking about Burgess being an "unhappy camper".

He claims that Burgess and his people met with the Raiders in April to discuss redoing his deal and the Raiders told him they'd get back to him in 2 weeks. Supposedly Derrick had to get ahold of the Raiders himself in June just to find out that they weren't going to touch his deal this season.

Anyone heard anything else about this, or is this just a bronco groupe startin shit?

This is the headline I've been just dreading...

Too bad we didn't do it in April since the sticker price probably would have been lower since Freeney's contract wouldn't have been factored in...

It would be nice to reward one of the few players we have that has played to an elite level the past few years, but I can't even remember the last time we extended a players contract early ... We had the chance to be proactive with Rod Coleman and get something done a year or two before he even reached his free agent year but opted to wait and we ended up with no chance of signing him...

I'd sure like to take a page from Philly's playbook as far as extending young foundation players like Mike Patterson, Shawn Andrews and Lito Sheppard even though they still had a lot of time on their rookie deals.... Be nice to get extensions done with guys like Nnamdi, Fabs and Morrison done really early and avoid the unnecessary drama...

Funny you say that since Burgess came from philly.

Well nothing will get done before we get JRuss and the rest of the rookies signed. This is the first I'm hearing about this. That would be a big distraction in a fairly smooth offseason if Burgess and his agent decide to play hardball. Would like to keep the continuity going with this defense, much like the Bucs did during their run.

If it gets ugly I think Burgess could end up being traded (hope Morrison was right on about that Richardson guy blowing shit up at the mini-camps). The reality is this org doesn't have a lot of cash and Russell is going to eat up a huge chunk of that this year and Aso next.

Oakland Raiders

-- Derrick Burgess Unhappy with Raiders --
Tue Jul 24, 2007 --from FFMastermind.com

NFL.com's Adam Schefter reports Oakland Raiders DE Derrick Burgess is unhappy about how the Raiders treated him during his offseason requests for a new contract. Burgess met with the Raiders in April and was told he would be given an answer in two weeks. In June, after he hadn't heard from his employer, Burgess called the Raiders again and was told they would not be restructuring or extending his contract. Burgess is scheduled to make $2.5 million this season, despite leading the league in sacks the past two years. He still has three years remaining on a five-year contract he signed with the Raiders in 2005. Burgess believes he should be paid like one of the game's top pass rushers. Oakland believes Burgess signed his name on a contract

Heres a few comparisons

last 2 years sacks and tackles

Aaron Schobel

12, 14 - 54, 35

Jason Taylor

12 , 13.5 - 52, 40

Peppers

10, 13 - 38, 48

Freeney

11, 5 - 26,29

Burgess

16, 11 - 51, 43

Derrick Burgess certainly has proven the last 2 years that he is a top 5 DE,

DB is 28 and will turn 29 next month. The Raiders ought to at least contact him.

DB is a year younger than Schobel.. but older than both Freeney and Peppers by a year or 2

Schobel had 26.5 sacks his 1st 3 years in the NFL and the Bills signed him to an extension through 2009

5 year deal worth 23 million and they paid him a $6.75 signing bonus this coming off 26.5 sacks in 3 years with the Bills

Now of course lets not forget the team that really fucked it all up

The Seahawks...

Signed Patrick Kearney a 31 year old good but not great DE player the last 3 years to a whopping....

6 year, $39.5 million deal WTF????

Kearneys guaranteed money is more than Burgess contract

I can see why he wants his due....

And he should get it

Did'nt we just free up a bunch of cash dumping Moss? I thought I read we were one of like 10 teams with $15 million is cap space..

Pay the man his money

NO DEAL IN OAKLAND

Oakland lived through the disruptions that wide receiver Jerry Porter caused last season. This season, they could come from Oakland defensive end Derrick Burgess, who is none too happy about how he feels the way the Raiders treated him during his offseason requests for a new contract.

Each side believes it has its point, but one is undeniable. With all the big money being showered on top-flight pass rushers such as Dwight Freeney and Joey Porter, Burgess wants his.

I think the unfortunate fact is the Raiders won't renegotiate a deal with 3 years left on it. Whether they should change this policy or not is certainly something to debate, but teams (especially the Raiders) don't tear up contracts with only 2 of the 5 years completed.

If Burgess puts in another 9-14 sack season, then he'll have a firm leg to stand on with respect to a potential holdout. But I think that's what he'll have to do... be the good soldier for at least one more year before getting the true sit-down with Al he so desires.

I wont be extremely worried about this until I see a quote from Burgess or if he don't show up July 26th. But then again, where there's smoke there's fire.

Rnat is nails on this one! Burgess, while showing a huge market value, should sack up for a year, and get NEXTyears value!!

I gotta disagree here.. He's proven he's the goods.. and what the fuckheads in Seattle gave Kearney and what the Colts gave Freeney, who by the way Burgess had a better year than....

Hell, go look at Kearneys contract

It's got stupid written all over it...

In fact all the owners in the NFL need to soap bar in towel baby club seal that MF'er owner in the head for fucking everything up

Here's a pretty good barometer on the kind of extension Nnamdi would look to get, should we choose to try and lock him up:

Bears agree to 6-year contract extension with cornerback Tillman

By John Clayton
ESPN.com

The Bears cleared a major hurdle for the future of their defense Tuesday by agreeing with cornerback Charles Tillman on a six-year extension that will keep him in Chicago until 2013.

The deal will pay about $38 million in new money with $18.5 million in guarantees.

He and Nnamdi were taken a few picks apart and they are pretty similar players...

I'm somewhat torn on this one. It would be nice to tear up his deal and renegotiate a new one but we were willing to pay him a 17.5 mill 5 year deal a few years back for a guy with a handful of sacks and a glass jaw. At the least, the Raiders should do is to give him some serious lip service into maybe redoing his deal at the end of this upcoming season. I mean he has outplayed his contract but from initial appearances, it looks like we're at an impasse here. I just hope he shows up to camp, plays his ass off this year and gets the deal he probably deserves.

Man seems like 20 mill in guarantees is getting to be the norm.

Lets see... when Burgess became a FA 2 years ago, NOBODY wanted to touch him, but the Raiders took a chance signing him with his past injury history. For those of you that can't remember that far back, ESPN, FOX News, CBS Sportsline and many many more had several articles basically laffing at and bashing Oakland for giving Burgess such a LARGE Contract saying that he is being "overpaid" and now those same mother fuckers are saying that he "deserves" more money because of the Stats he's put up the last 2 seasons....

Burgess agreed to a 5 year contract and had no problem signing that contract which at the time was more than a lot of fans thought it should be...

Im sick and fuckin tired of players signing contracts and then just because some FA signs a HUGE deal a year or two later, they automatically want more just because the other player is getting more.

He signed a fuckin contract and should have paid attention to things such as escalators and incentives for performance... obviously, the performance of the past 2 season would be worth a hell of a lot more if it would have been built into the contract (which it might be, but not mentioned)....

This league is turning into a fuckin joke with these outlandish contracts and players are turning into a bunch of spoiled fuckin brats!

I agree but unfortunately that is today's professional sports landscape. It doesn't seem right but it's how the game is played. Most players and teams are playing the game.

I just hope we can work something out with Aso before that gets ugly but actually I doubt it. Doesn't seem to be the Raiders way.

Well, Aso can void his contract at the end of the season if he meets the criteria (which I would like to know right now what that is specifiically)... Burgess still has 3 years on his contract.. IMO, getting ASO signed to an extention is more important right now than Burgess... Does Derrick deserve something for his efforts? Hell ya, but thats what incentives are for in contracts.. why the fuck didn't he pay attention to those? Why do players sign contracts with no intention to honor them if they out perform them.... do they pay back owners when they SUCK? Fuck no...

Aso will no doubt be tagged if we can't come to some sort of an accord so we'll get him for another season at least. I would like to see another all pro like season from him before offing up the big bucks though.

Specifically, I don't know the exact number but the option in his contract is tied in to playing time.

"Raiders CB Nnamdi Asomugha's contract will void after the 2007 season because he's hit incentives"
