DeFilippo now Raiders QB coach

INDIANAPOLIS -- I meant to blog yesterday on the first day of media access at the scouting combine. I spent the whole day in the hallway instead, talking to players, agents, coaches and (occasionally) other members of the media.

Hey, that's how you pick up tidbits. Like this one: Remember John DeFilippo? He used to be a member of the Giants' coaching staff way, way, way back to last week. If you know him, you're a hardcore fan because he was the offensive quality control coach. He's since been replaced by Sean Ryan after the team said he moved on for a "better opportunity."
He did: DeFilippo is the Raiders' new quarterbacks coach. Not a bad gig for a 28-year-old up-and-comer. He'll get a chance to work under 31-year-old head coach Lane Kiffin and probably coach the No. 1 pick in the draft, assuming Oakland takes a QB (JaMarcus Russell perhaps).

John DeFilippo, offensive quality control; born April 12, 1978, Youngstown, Ohio. Quarterback James Madison 1996-99. No pro playing experience. College coach: Fordham 2000, Notre Dame 2001-02, Columbia 2003-04. Pro coach. Joined Giants in 2005.

Young coaching "minds" mixed with young(ish) former players as various position coaches. Talk about a Paradigm Shift by Al Davis.

Anyone who knows Flip personally can attest that the guy is first class all the way. The Raiders head coach did not know Flip personally. Flip was granted an interview based on another coaches recommendation . Anyone who spends more than two minutes with Flip knows he is a genuine person with a wealth of football knowledge. He is also blends well with others. Needless to say, the guy blew them away on his interview. 28 years old and a QB coach in the NFL. That only happens to special people and Flip is special people.

Also: Notre Dame 2001-02 he was with Tyrone Willingham on the 10 win Coacjh of the year staff.

That also puts him on the staff that recruited the man among men, the one Tom Cruise handpicked to spawn Suri, Mr. Dreamboat himself, Brady Quinn...
