Deal extended for Sundquist
By Bill Williamson
Denver Post Staff Writer
Ted Sundquist took time out from working to secure free agents to cement his future with the Broncos.
Denver's general manager, whose contract was set to expire at the end of this month, finalized an extension that could keep him with the only NFL team he has worked for through 2009. The final year is an option year.
"This is good news for the Denver Broncos and our fans," Broncos owner Pat Bowlen said. "Ted has been a big contributor to our success over the years, and I'm confident he will continue to work with (coach Mike Shanahan) to bring a Super Bowl champion to Denver."
Added Shanahan: "I am very pleased that we came to this agreement with Ted. He has been, and will continue to be, a big asset to the organization."
His signing means the team will be uninterrupted as it prepares for the new NFL calendar year, which begins March 3.
Sundquist, 43, has been Denver's general manager since 2002. His duties include personnel and the salary cap. The former Air Force fullback joined the Broncos as a scout. He will be entering his 15th season with the team.
Sundquist was a finalist for the team president's job in Seattle last year and previously had drawn interest from Chicago and Atlanta.
"I've been a Bronco going on 15 years, and it's hard to envision myself being anywhere else," Sundquist said. "This will ensure I will remain here over the course in what I think will be an exciting time for the organization."
