From what limited action I saw of this kid at OLB last preseason, I was pretty impressed with his aggressiveness, range, and hitting. I think he can defend the shorter routes (tight ends, backs) well enough and dude can come up and lay the wood. I'd love to see him crack the starting lineup and beat out Sam Williams. I haven't seen or read anything on him since he went on IR last year but I have a feeling the So. Cal. Kiffin/Bing history will work in his favor- any thoughts on this kid?

The USC connection could definitely work in his favor.

I think he'd be perfect as a nickel backer. I think Sam Williams played pretty well last year, so I don't want him out of the rotation, but it would be nice to see if Bing can be another Cato June.

Funny, two years ago this was the team's biggest weakness. Now, with Morrison, Howard, Williams, Thomas and Bing, it could actually be a strength.

Anyone else hope Grant Irons gets moved back to DE and gets a shot to play a little? I think he and Huntley could actually be a decent combo.

I'm still thinking Howard will add 10 pounds and play strongside this year while Bing and R.Thomas duke it out at weakside.

It looks like with Tommy Kelly moving to End, an emerging Huntley and candidates in Irons/Brayto, the Raiders are trying to at least throw numbers at that position.

Looks like the biggest remaining question on defense is DT......

BTW, I predict now that Brayton will be hard pressed to make the roster this year. Forget being a starter.

I thought Bing was badly overrated at USC. As a LB, though, I think he has a chance to be pretty decent.

I agree with you Jack... At SC he was pretty good playing man in a short area, sketchy when asked to play the deeper stuff in a cover two... I think he's a guy that you can bring in to play the TE on passing downs... That would allow Huff to move back into a cover two shell with Schweig while still playing man under with the corners and LB's... Huff or Scwheig can Bing give over the top bracket help on the more difficult covers like Gonzo and Gates... Hopefully by freeing Huff up to play back more, we'll see more INT's from our safeties...

I don't know if Bing will ever project to a full time starter at LB, the guy is built like a rock, but he tends to get nicked up every year...

I'd have to agree with that assessment. The kid will have to get used to his bigger body, which will take a couple years, and by then we'll have younger kids starting. Bing looks poised to kill on special teams and in special roles barring injuries to starters.

Ths is is interesting that we're willing to do with Bing what alotta people were asking for with Gibby... cept Gibby may be a better athlete.

Why didn't they try it out

Yeah, it makes better sense to play the 4th rounder to his strengths rather than the 1st rounder. I can dig it.

I think its more of a "4th rounder won't be as much of a loss of face or finance if it doesn't work out" sort of thing.

They projected Bing as a linebacker before they even drafted him.
