I think regardless of what we do in the draft, I have a pretty strong feeling that the Raiders will sign Dante Culpepper once he is released by Miami.

Even if we draft a QB, the thinking will obviously be that he would come in to compete with Walter for the job in 2007. Probably a 1 year deal that would allow Culpepper to resurrect his career with an eye toward 2008.

This could also have some benefit if the team is unable (or unwilling?) to move Randy Moss. Moss might like the idea of being reunited with his old QB.

The longer the McCown thing drags on, the more I doubt the transaction. Besides, McCown will cost a draft pick, possibly a 3rd rounder , while Culpepper could be had for zero compensation.

This is good ol' fashioned speculation on my part. No links, no substantive angle or inside info.

I thought I read somewhere that Culpepper still isn't 100%?

At any rate, I'm to the point that I'd just rather see Walter handed the job for another season if we don't draft a QB. That way I won't have to listen to all the "he never got a fair shot" BS when we find ourselves in the exact same position this time next year.

That's the rub and that's also the reason we'll get him for next to nothing. Walter probably would start, but Culpepper (let's say at 80% health?) could be veteran insurance at #2 and if we draft Russell/Quinn, they could be #3 for at least half a season.

Walter get's "one more shot".

Culpepper is had on the cheap and has an outside shot at reviving his career.

Russell or Quinn don't need to face live fire from Day-1 behind a suspect Oline.

Win-Win-Win in my book.

He had another surgery on his knee in November to "clean up some stuff" and won't be ready to participate in training for another two months. Not the kind of stuff that inspires signing this guy. He may be done quite frankly.

That just leaves the depth chart too convoluted for my taste. I prefer a clear-cut pecking order in which each player knows his role. Throwing Culpepper into the mix only delays the rebuilding process IMO. I would feel differently if I thought there was a remote possibility that he represented a long-term solution.

It's only April, he's got more than enough time to rehab. Only concern would be whether he could get enough reps with the 1st team to have his timing down by September.

But signing him pretty much ensures the 1st pick in the draft is Russell. Moss would be back on board and Culpepper might be the most ideal mentor for Russell. If we were to sign Culpepper, I might even support drafting Russell.

perfectly happy with Walter/Culpepper/Russell vs. Brooks/Walter/ 2E.

Just seems like he'd be a poor fit. He really struggled in 2005 when Minny went to more of a WCO. Last year this would have made a hell of a lot of sense to me.

Banter is right on this one, he was dogshit when he tore up his knee while playin in a WCO that year. His stats were brutal.

And it wasn't a normal ACL tear. If I remember it was all 3 ligs and they were saying it was jacked up and maybe a career ender. He still isn't 100% so that is a major concern with that type of knee inujury.

That was probably the most vicious hit I've ever seen on someone's knee save maybe McGahee's. I'd have to say he's probably toast at this point.

I'd like to think Kiffin's system has enough flexibility to accomodate both Culpepper's and Moss' style of play. Plus if Russell is the pick, I really don't think Kiffin's system is going to resemble Gruden's version of the WCO. That system would really not match Russell's strengths.

I could easily see a more vertical, spread out Kiffin system resembling the thing Martz put together with the Rams. I think that kind of system would play well to what Moss, Culpepper, and Russell bring to the table.

The resign Aaron Brooks/draft Calvin Johnson and trade up to draft Tedd Ginn Jr. bandwagon is starting right here, right now... Who's with me? :p

Let's face facts, ANY vet QB we bring in at this point is going to have question marks-huge question marks beside his name... That's just the way the free agent QB game works and why we are forced to get in bed with the likes of Kerry Collins and Aaron Brooks every two years, which to me is the best argument for drafting a top guy while we're in position to do so and stopping the madness already.... With the value teams are putting on their backup QB's these days and with the way teams have learned to massage the salary cap, I don't foresee a clean FA QB hitting the market.... but hey, maybe we'll get lucky and catch lightning in a bottle with another Gannon signing... We did it with Plunk in the 80's and Gannon in the late 90's afterall... I figure we should be golden somewhere around 2015 or so... :D

I'm one of the few that actually liked Culpepper over the years... If Pepper is healthy enough, then at least we can put a guy out there that actually has played to a high level in the league and we can help Kiff out by being competitive... The rub is he's probably at least a month or so away from being cleared to consistently grind away...

It's unfortunate that we're a year late for Drew Brees because he'd be a good fit within this offense... but the fact remains that we need to bring a vet in... As it stands, Andrew Walter has absolutely no competition at the spot, which to me is really unhealthy... As far as vet QB's go, IMO it's going to be either sign Pep or give up picks to aquire McCown or Plummer... IMO, Plummer is actually the best fit for what Kiff has run at SC, but I don't think Tampa is in a hurry to assist us unless we help put them in position to obtain Calvin Johnson...

Personally I think that drafting Calvin Johnson definitely means Randy Moss is getting wet with Wood this summer because we sure ain't going to pay the guy and not start him... CJ, Porter and Curry are better physical fits as far as working between the hashes...

Without trying to make anyone bring their lunch back up, I'd have to go with McCallum on that one, final answer.

The Joe Theisman hit wasn't exactly easy on the eyes either.

Funny, I'm listening to NFL rewind or whatever on Serius and they have been talking about Culpepper to the Raiders quite a bit.

I don't think Moss is any more interested in Daunte coming here than I am. They're not exactly buddies, ya know.

That reminds me. Any of you ladies wanna stand up and take credit for call me a dummy when I told you that trading a 2nd round pick for Culpepper would be a huge mistake? Anyone?

Hello?

Bueller?

Even Jack and I were with you on that one, as I recall. I don't think the C-Pepp bandwagon had too many riders.

In ATL, Knapp stuck Vick in an offense that didn't match his strengths.

It could happen again.

Well, it's not really Knapp's fault. He has no experience with the wishbone.

Good point, RHC. Vick being stuck in any offense that involves the QB passing isn't a very good fit ;)
