What happens to Clark?

July 20th, 2006
By Jerry McDonald

Remember Greg Biekert?

He was considered a leader, a smart defender and a good team guy. And he got moved out by rookie first-round draft pick Napoleon Harris just before the 2002 season began.

Now comes Danny Clark. He’s considered a team leader, a smart defender and a good team guy. He could be on the verge of being shown the door, Biekert style.

Clark, according to coach Art Shell, is running second to Kirk Morrison at middle linebacker. Morrison, the NFL leader in tackles as a rookie third-round draft pick, was moved inside so the Raiders could get a look at rookie second-round pick Thomas Howard and Sam Williams on the field at the same time.

“Danny Clark is an integral part of this football team,'’ Shell said.

Clark also has a salary cap figure of just over $2.7 million _ the ninth high.est number on the team.

When the Raiders moved Harris into Biekert’s sport, they gave the veteran linebacker the opportunity of staying if he would agree to a substantial salary cut. Biekert said no, and wound up being released, signing with the Minnesota Vikings.

With the Raiders just $1.8 million under the cap entering the weekend, you wonder if they’re considering the same kind of move with Clark. Releasing Clark would save nearly $1.4 million against the cap.

It’s Brooks - no surprise

Art Shell made official what Aaron Brooks’ $3 million salary cap number had indicated since the day he signed _ he will open training camp as the starting quarterback of the Oakland Raiders.

“Right now, Aaron Brooks is the guy,'’ Shell said in a 31-minute conference call with Bay Area reporters. “Still, there’s nothing etched in stone. We’re going to take a look at what we have, and by the time we come out of training camp and get ready for the first regular season game, we want to make sure we have the right guy in place. Right now, Aaron is going in as the guy.'’

Shell also confiirmed Paul McQuistan is running with the first team at right guard, and said Kirk Morrison would enter training camp as the starting middle linebacker over Danny Clark, flanked by Sam Williams and rookie second-round draft pick Thomas Howard

IMO having Clark the first LB of the bench isn't a bad thing. I like the idea of moving Morrision inside. I think he'll be even better there. Now it's up to Howard and Williams to git'r done on the edges.

On paper it looks exciting.

Agreed. Clark is a nice, hard nosed player, BUT he IS a step slow. Morrison is already better suited to play MLB, and the possibility of Williams (SAM) & Howard (WLB) would give us much greater speed.

Clark would be nice veteran insurance in case someone falters (Howard) or gets injured (Williams).

We can't afford to lose Clark, but then again if we can perforn a cut and re-sign, or a renegotiation.

Bah! He deserves to start, but I like the option of having a trio of fast kids out there making things happen.

I would never let Clark go but I like the idea of building a young, fast LB corps. As RIVL mentioned, Clark is a workout warrior and does a decent job but he's a step slow and that can hurt a defense. Besides, Morrision showed huge upside and appears better suited for the inside where he cluld be even better.

I'm all for using this year to get the young kids into the lineup right away, have them play together and then see what we have. It's not like we're beating down the Super Bowl wall or anything.
