I'm bothered by this a lot. Last night, I saw the pictures of Gracelyn Trimble's face and the screencaps she took of the conversation between she and Dalvin Cook. I shook my head and was disgusted and frustrated.
This morning, I see the counter-argument. It's a video one of Cook's friends took of a previous altercation where you can see Cook trying to leave the room Trimble is in. She is blocking his exit. He asks her to let him leave, then you can hear him ask several times (relatively calmly), "Let go of my hair." The friend videoing is also asking her to just let Cook leave, whereupon she threatens to "get my gun and shoot yo' black ass."
Ummmm...I really hate this world of whoever makes the first call to the cops is the REAL victim when things like this happen more frequently than some folks want to admit. I'll take it one step further by saying that I, as a woman writing this post, would be a pariah for acknowledging that maybe, just MAYBE Trimble was a huge contributing factor to their problems.
Do I condone him hitting her? Nope. Do I think it's OK? Nope. Would they both have been better suited to end the relationship before it got to that point? You betcha. But they stayed together for quite some time after this happened, and this is just now coming out after they broke up for good.
I'm not a sympathizer for abusive men, but I've also witnessed women and men trying to walk away from volatile situations in the "flight" mode who then convert to "fight" mode when they aren't allowed to leave or the other person starts hitting them.
I don't even know why I'm posting this other than it bugs me that the pendulum is allowing men to be victimized with alarming frequency. /broad brush painting.
