After about 4 months of bravado, "take the franchise QB", "no guts no glory". Now I'm having second thoughts. I'm terrified at the prospect that JaMarcuss Russell will flame out. That thought has been creeping on me slowly, but surely. The prospect of blowing this is...well....bad.

I'm more & more on board with a trade down to #4 or possibly even #8 and get a shit load of picks to build this team. Attack this squad with quality numbers, not some crap shoot? We all know that Jimmy Johnson basically built the early 90's Cowboys teams that way.

Then again, if we pass on a potential John Elway of the next generation, WTF will say then?

I'm more excited that this thing will FINALLY be over & done with than I am to actually make the selection. Maybe hedging our bets with more selections is the way to go for this young team with many holes?

BTW, I'm leaning once again toward Calvin Johnson if we remain at #1. He still has tremendous value if we take him. See what people offer when it really matters and if we don't like the offer(s), keep the probable next Great WR in the NFL.

Its a good point, but Im more calm than ever.

At some point we've just gotta take the chance, I mean can we get worse? *Rhetorical*

I've never been more firmly in the JR camp.

Totally on board, right with you on all counts. There's some part of me that hopes we trade down, miss out on the top QBs and wind up selecting Gaines Adams or Adrian Peterson.

Calvin Johnson does make a lot of sense though, considering that neither Porter or Moss are likely to be around for more than another year or two.

Funny, Gains Adams would not upset me in the least. The defense is "this close". You trade down, select Adams to go with Burgess (and Sapp on passing downs), sheesh, I likely. Round it out be trading that slug Randy Moss for a 4th & that young DT and the defense is essentially locked down. A real force IMO.

In turn, you essentially burn the extra picks along with most of our current selctions to build the offense at many positions. Couple of Olineman, QB, WR, TE, RB, we'd have plenty of amo.

I have liked CJ and AP for so long I would be ok with either of them at #1, i know they are going to excel barring injury for AP. JR and BQ looked like damned fine prospects, if our staff finds one of them to be worthy of the #1 overall status then Ill be happy. Right now one guy is the cant miss player for that spot on everyone's account, Calvin Johnson. He will be on the field helping next season. Al is old.

I take that to mean that you agree with Bones in that Al won't buck the trend and take a QB? Calvin it is.....

Funny you mention this cause I was in the bookstore the other day checking out PFW's little draft book, and they're comments/rankings kinda gave me some last minute skidishness too.

They rank Quinn over JR(both under a 6.5 ranking IIRC, nothing real special in their ranking scheme) with alotta comments about JR being the kind to get a huge contract and dissappear, and needing a an energetic, veteran coaching staff to keep on him.

Then they ranked AP and CP both with 8.5's which I honestly don't believe I've ever seen from them... that's like the their highest rankings ever :D

Anyhow... kinda made me nervous, although in the back of my mind I know it's just another opinion.

AP is the real deal. But I wont lie, the fact he needs another surgery on that shoulder worries me. He is going to dominate, I hope he can remain healthy enough to have a long career? CJ is a 6'5 240lb 4.3 WR with great hands and a good attitude who is a safe pick because WR's dont have to think as much as QB's. A QB has to study film and work hard and say all the right things and lead the team. A WR can be a jerk as long as he plays his ass off. CJ is a very quality young man so he offers the best of both worlds also. JR is a gamble because he has to be able to read defense's and study film, not because of his skills. All three have major skills.

Good point, most all other positions don't require much more than keeping in shape and outta jail.

Another thing I heard that was alittle smoky is that JR is going to get around 33 million guaranteed as the #1 pick and the only other player in NFL history to recieve more guaranteed money is Payton Manning

Something's just so wrong with the rookie pay scale in the NFL.

I agree with this.

we seem to be on the same wavelength

trading back, IMO, is always the best option when your picking in the top 5

especially when your picking in the top 5 on a consistant basis

I'll be happy with Russell at #1 unless Detroit gets a killer package for trading down.

Was listening to Fox Sports Radio who had Chris Landry on last night. He's one of a few who really have a hard on for JRuss. Said he's either going to be very good or a major disappointment. Didn't have a lot of positive things to say about him, most of the regurgitated crap you've heard elsewhere, i.e. the work ethic etc. "Al likes the big arm"

Well sooner or later we're going to have to pull the string on a QB. If we keep signing every one's garbage then we can expect more of the same results. The guy's only 21, has a huge upside if he can keep his head on straight. Doesn't seem to have any major character flaws. He's going to give the Raider faithful something to finally look forward to. Remember, a lot of the pundits were saying the same things about Vince Young prior to last season and Russell IMO, has the superior physical skills.

I also feel that he's coming into a nice situation with a brand new regime and a HC who knows a thing or two about developing QB's. While a trade down scenario is intriguing, that's just no the old man's style. He'd package up picks to move back up anyway and it's not like we don't have any draft picks this season. We have to make this move.

they probably will. Which is why they told the Bucs to lie and say the deal is off. Raiders drafting CJ fucks Detroit out of their first options trading down. And I bet there's options there.

The funny thing is as against Young as I was last year, he probably would have been the best QB we could have put in that "offense" last year.

I love it. Everyone just convieniently forgets that we have a young QB with tons of potential already on the team. All he needs is a running game, a little blocking and WRs that catch the ball when it hits them in the hands. But no, let's give 30 mil gauranteed to a rookie who has never taken a snap because you know that only first round QBs make the probowl and win SBs. If we draft a QB #1 overall we will have no choice but to play him even if he can't win the job on his own because we can't have 30 mil sitting on the bench while we wait for him to learn how to be a NFL QB. It's not that I don't think JR and BQ are talented. I just don't think they have #1 overall talent. Neither comes close to reminding me of Elway, Marino, Kelly, Manning (Peyton).........etc. I would much rather find out what we already have before we throw it away just because. CJ or AP makes a whole lot more sense at the #1 than either QB.

I'd be happiest extorting the Falcons, who are likely to pay more than anyone for a local product and a weapon for Vick. It will certainly sell well to fans, plus Atlanta has 2 high 2nd rd. picks.
