Congrats to Brad Childress in getting his first win as a NFL head coach and a Vikings head coach. He deserved that win. His team played a good game out there. He had his team ready to go and it showed. This team was very composed out there and it's a credit to Brad's coaching and Brad Johnson's work on offense. I just love how this team did not get carried away or lose focus in the fourth quarter like you saw with Mike Tice's teams. They got great work from the defense, efficent play by the quarterback, and dominating performance from their OL.
The Vikings D was huge especially in the second half. You have to like how they stepped up when Longwell miss that 56-yarder to give Skins a good possession to score. I thought Fred and Darren played a great game. They were hitting the Skins good. Mike Tomlin, the first year Vikings defensive coordinator who comes from the school of Tony Dungy, did a great job getting his unit to be effective.
Brad played a great game. He did a good job with throwing the ball deep and making smart decisions. That was nice to see. I liked how he was able to spread the ball to his receivers from Troy to Marcus to Billy and to Travis. He was very poised out there. He was a huge reason why the Vikings own.
I know some people are dissapointed with Troy misss passes that he should have caught and I agree, but at the mean time, isn't this his first full year as the everyday starter. He did not play much last year so it's normal for him to make these mistakes. He will get better. Remember Larry Fitzgerald Jr. had the same problems that Troy had last night in his first season. Troy did made some good plays to generate the Vikings scoring drive.
I am more concerned about the play of the running backs. Chester did some good things, but then again in the secodn half, it looked like he did nothing. Everytime he ran, he did not make any impact. He ran like for 2 to 4 yards I thought as he was tackled easily. Maybe he will get better as the season goes on. He has to get better.
The play of the OL was awesome last night which is why Brad was able to make great throws. Steve was fantastic, wasn't he. He was having his way with the Redskins defenders. You can understand why Zygi did everything it took to sign him and to make sure Seattle couldn't match. He made an impact on this game for sure.
Ryan showed why the Vikings signed him in the first day of free agency. He made several field goals especially the one in the end. I am going to enjoy watching him this year. I thought this was a great signing along with getting Steve.
It was a ugly game to watch and it was an ugly win, but that's what road wins all about. It will never be pretty. I just liked how the Vikings find a way to get it done. As labt said, if Tice was there this year, I am not sure if they were going to get it done. I did not think the Vikings would win this game last night and I have to admit I was thinking 0-2. To get 1 out of 2 is awesome. To get the first win out of the way is a good thing too because once you are a 0-2 hole, it gets harder to get win #1 as we saw last year. That start doomed Tice as a head coach.
Vikings players should be proud of themselves for their performance last night.
