CHIEFS AGREE TO TERMS WITH DT SHANE BURTON

Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Monday that the club has agreed to terms of a one-year contract with DT Shane Burton. As per Chiefs policy, no other details of the agreement were made available.
DT Shane Burton (6-1, 310) joins the Chiefs as a free agent after spending nine NFL seasons with four different clubs (Miami ‘96-’98, Chicago ‘99, N.Y. Jets 2000-01, Carolina 2002-03). Burton has seen action in 125 contests (49 starts) during his career, tallying 294 tackles (174 solo), 18.0 sacks (-97.0 yards), 43 passes defensed, five fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and three interceptions (47 yards). He also took part in three postseason contests, registering 10 tackles (five solo) and a half sack.
Burton played in 16 games (four starts) for the Panthers in 2003, recording 32 tackles (21 solo), 2.0 sacks (-12.0 yards), three passes defensed, a forced fumble and one interception (10 yards). He originally entered the NFL as a fifth-round draft pick of the Dolphins in ‘96.
The Catawba, North Carolina native was a two-year starter at the University of Tennessee. Burton started at left defensive tackle as a senior in ‘95 and finished with 46 tackles, 6.5 sacks, one tackle for loss, one fumble recovery, one interception and five passes defensed. He was selected to play in the Hula Bowl following his senior campaign.
