CHIEFS NOTEBOOK | A Trent Green sighting
The Kansas City Star
On a day when Terrell Owens dominated the news around the NFL, Chiefs quarterback Trent Green dashed onto an elevator at Arrowhead Stadium, spent part of the day with the team and was able to drive himself to work.
And that was a decent buzz in Kansas City.
Green, who’s been out of sight since being knocked unconscious in the season opener Sept. 10, declined interview requests Wednesday as he made the rounds in sweats and a T-shirt. He’s expected to attend Sunday’s game against the 49ers, though coach Herm Edwards said he doesn’t know whether Green will be on the sidelines or somewhere else in the stadium.
Edwards called Green’s status a “day-to-day, week-to-week thing.” Green has been ruled out for this weekend.
“It’s good to see him,” Edwards said. “I had to introduce him to the players, because some of these young ones weren’t here when he was here. I told them he was a football player on Sunday, and then he decided to try to be a prizefighter. He didn’t duck and got hit with a right.
“I think the players appreciate him being around. I know I appreciate him being around.”
Eyes on T.O.
Speaking of Owens, the Chiefs were wrapping up practice Wednesday before Owens had his news conference denying reports that he attempted suicide. But much of the team was interested in the developments in Dallas.
Kansas City expressed interest in Owens last spring, but ultimately decided to address other needs. Edwards, intrigued by Owens’ talent, said Wednesday that he hoped Owens was OK.
“At the end of the day, they’re people,” Edwards said. “They’re not machines, they’re not robots. Just because they’re athletes doesn’t mean they don’t have people problems. We all do.”
Receiver Eddie Kennison said the media were blowing the Owens situation “way out of proportion.” Guard Brian Waters, who grew up just outside Dallas, received several calls from friends in the area saying that the local TV stations broke into regular programming with T.O. updates.
“He’s a good football player,” Waters said. “He’s good for this game. He really is. Even with all the things, the attention, he brings a lot of spark to the game.”
Injury report
San Francisco running back Frank Gore is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game after bruising ribs in the third quarter of last weekend’s Philadelphia game.
Gore, who rushed for 266 yards and three touchdowns in the first three games, is expected to play against the Chiefs.
