Woods didn't even get a cup of coffee in a crowded group

It was apparent almost from the start that there was no room for Rashaun Woods in the Chargers' crowded receivers mix.
“We all came to a very early decision on his ability to help us,” Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith said yesterday, shortly after the team announced it had waived Woods. “We're really comfortable – and I mean really comfortable – with the six guys we have on this football team that have been in the Chargers system.”
The early release of Woods also allows the former first-round draft pick to seek work elsewhere. Woods, the 30th overall selection in 2004 by the San Francisco 49ers, was acquired in a trade for Sammy Davis in April. Davis was the Chargers' first-round selection in 2003, so this move slams the door on what is so far Smith's only major draft blemish.
To replace Woods, the Chargers acquired Gerran Walker off waivers from the Indianapolis Colts. Walker, an undrafted free agent out of Lehigh, is likely camp filler.
The Chargers have Keenan McCardell, Eric Parker, Vincent Jackson, Kassim Osgood, Malcom Floyd and Greg Camarillo on their roster. The fifth (and likely final) receiver spot will likely come down to Floyd and Camarillo. Camarillo can remain on the practice squad another year. Floyd cannot be placed on the practice squad.
Extra points
Much more exciting than the overhyped Oklahoma drill is when the offensive linemen go one-on-one with the defensive ends and outside linebackers. The Chargers ran that drill yesterday for the first time in camp. Best moment: Rookie left tackle Marcus McNeill stopping linebacker Steve Foley –on both turns, including when Foley tried spinning away. McNeill has repeatedly shown he is quick on his feet and knows how to use his very large body.
Defensive tackle Jamal Williams (knee) practiced for the first time, and defensive end Igor Olshansky (back) returned to practice after missing the previous three.
Tests revealed rookie defensive end Chase Page suffered sprained ligaments in his knee on Monday. He is expected to miss two to four weeks.
Rookie receiver Sean Coffey will miss two to four weeks with a separated shoulder.
Tight end Brandon Manumaleuna will assume Woods' No. 86.
The team practices twice today. The 3:20 p.m. session is open to the public.
