Chargers LB Foley to miss 2006 season
SAN DIEGO - San Diego Chargers starting outside linebacker Steve Foley will not play this season after being shot multiple times by a police officer early Sunday morning.
The Chargers placed Foley on the non-football injured reserve list on Monday, ending his season.
The wounds suffered by Foley are not life-threatening.
"Our concern right now is for Steve's health and well-being," Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said. "Steve's health needs to be his number one priority. Football is secondary now right now. Steve needs to focus on his recovery."
Foley was shot in front of his suburban home. According to the police report, an officer began following Foley, who was suspected for drunken driving. After stopping at a traffic light, the police officer identified himself to Foley and told him to pull over but Foley refused and drove off.
Foley stopped again and got out of the car to approach the officer, who again identified himself, pulled out a gun and ordered Foley to stop several times.
However, Foley got back into his car and the police officer followed him to a cul-de-sac in Poway, where Foley lives.
At that point, Foley again got of the car and started walking toward the officer, while his female passenger drove the car alongside him.
The officer fired a warning shot into the bushes. The female then revved the car engine and drove at the officer, who was out of his car.
Foley reached into his pants with his right hand as he approached the officer and the officer fired and hit Foley, who continued to move forward. The officer fired again and Foley fell to the ground.
Foley was taken to the hospital while the female passenger was taken to the Poway sheriff's station for questioning. No charges have been filed.
This is not the first run-in with the law involving Foley. Last April, he was accused of resisting arrest, battery on a police officer and public drunkenness. But the San Diego District Attorney's office said it would not pursue charges for that incident.
Foley, who turns 31 years old on September 11, started 13 games last season and tied for third on the team with 4 1/2 sacks.
