Camp discussion

Waaaaay too early first impressions based off a few minutes of clips but… Mellott looked comfortable and quick out there. Sure would be nice to get lucky on a pick like that and have an offensive weapon.

I think they are really high on him. He is so versatile. Returner, receiver, qb on gadget plays.

While talking heads kept comp’ing Edlemen, Spyguy said Tyson Hill, not b/c the two are physically similar, but how Mellott might be used on O.
The Raiders have had difficulty with scoring while in the redzone. Possibly Mellott and even a pick like Pegues are there to give the redzone offense further options.

That said, while the unit does have a lot of moving pieces right now, I do think Mellott has a chance to contribute as a WR.

That THill comp is a little wonky tho…. Hill is a big man that plays TE that has carved out a wildcat QB role in the mold of a power forward. His game is about power and not speed / shiftiness like hopefully what TD Tommy can bring. I think the point that Spy was trying to make wasn’t so much a comp between the two players but the potential impact on the opposing D’s time to prep for the multiple threats.

Was listening to Kirwin & Miller on SiriusXM talking about Mellot and they brought up the comp of Antwan Randle El which seems a lot more appropriate. Small, fast college QB that played wr, returner, wildcat QB, out-of-the backfield receiver for Steelers; jack of all trades type guy that D had to account for. Would be very nice if he can become that type player.

I never understand the hype with Taysum Hill tbh. I don’t see what he does that any run of the mill H Back wouldn’t give you.

We drafted 11 players as well as brought in another 15 UDFA’s that’s a whole lot of new. I would imagine the vast majority of those guys don’t make the roster. Mellott is gonna have to show something special rather fast in order to make the team.

This is why I wish the NFL would adjust their practice squad rules. As it stands now a team can only protect 4 of the 16 players each week. I’d like to see it where any rookies are protected automatically. Along with an expansion of the practice squad to 22 players. With no more than 10 of those practice squad players being rookies. This would allow for up to 14 players being protected for the entire season. Allowing for a true developmental period of your draft class and or UDFA’s.

Before the league year starts a team would have to either sign them to a 3 year deal or subject that player to signing with another team as I believe that’s how it works now. Once the players second year starts if not signed they are free to sign with any team that offers them a contract.

The product would be so much better if they allowed teams to build depth without the fear of losing them. I expect it’s the players union that opposes it though. They don’t want cheaper options driving down contract numbers.

Expansion of the roster means more jobs. Add in a point-something percent increase in the cap, establish a PS max cap.

I’m sure it could be done, I just think there’s probably not much of a push for it on either side but especially from the players. Agent commission is percentage based so they really depend on the bigger contracts for it to be worth their time and you can guarantee agents have huge sway with the NFLPA.

I just think he’s a 1st down maker. I want to say he’s pushing 40% of the time he touches the ball it’s a 1st down over his career. That is pretty amazing for a guy that can run pass and catch.

The passing is more myth than reality at this point though. He attempted 4 passes last year, 11 the season before. Not that it isn’t good production from someone on a 6th round rookie contract, but Taysum Hill the legend is massively overrated IMO.

I think outside of Payton it has fallen off quite a bit. It’s one thing to have a skill set to do many things, it’s something completely different to have a HC that understands the how and when’s along with a determination to do such things.

I can almost guarantee that Mellott makes the team barring some injury settlement.

I’m not exactly calling a shot yes or no but he’s a QB making a position switch for a team that just drafted 2 other WR’s. In my mind he’s a long shot to make the 53 man roster unless he shows something special on ST’s. For the 6th member of the Backstreet Boys he sure has a lot of hype as a potential “all around” type player.
