Calvin Johnson's demands may be impossible to meet
Fri, 27 Jul 2007 16:22:31 -0700

Jason Cole, of Yahoo! Sports, reports the contract that Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson wants may be mathematically impossible.

Johnson wants $30 million in guaranteed money, but according to an NFLPA source, he is only eligible for $27.1 million in guaranteed money because the team has already signed its other draft picks.

This is rather interesting and brings up a point about our situation with Russell and Miller....

Does anyone know what our rookie pool was and where it stands currently? If Miller is wanting a certain amount, that might be what is holding up signing Russell ..

just a thought..

The figures on Moses hasn't been announced but it appears that our third rounder received a signing bonus of $1.2 million to go along with a first year salary of $285,000.

Thanks AP... just more curiousity than anything.. I was hoping to hear that Zack Miller was signed.. kinda bummed me out when I have not seen anything yet today.

I had no idea there was a cap on guaranteed money. If there really is, I think that's great news for team picking at the top of the draft. I've always subscribed to the idea that once a player holds out, teams should start taking money off the table. If leveraging Miller's contract can be a way to take money off the table for Russell, I'm all for it.

Raiders still waiting on Russell

As expected, quarterback JaMarcus Russell was not among the Raiders players checking into Napa for the start of training camp on Thursday.

But head coach Lane Kiffin doesn’t seem too bothered by the absence of his heralded rookie, who remains at his home some 2,400 miles away in Mobile, Ala.

“We have a lot of time,” said Kiffin, who did not call Russell a holdout. “We’re moving along very quickly but at the same time we’re doing things in the best interest for our future as well. We don’t have anything mandatory till tomorrow morning, so as far as guys being here they’re all showing up at different times.”

Kiffin set a 7 a.m. mandatory team meeting for Friday morning and said that no players would be considered late to camp if they report by then.

But with negotiations between the Raiders and Russell still ongoing, it’s unlikely Russell will attend the meeting. The rookie quarterback is said to be seeking a deal in the $60 million range while Oakland is trying to come in under that number.

The Raiders did announce the signings of third-round picks Quentin Moses and Johnnie Lee Higgins. Tight end Zach Miller, the team’s second round pick who is also unsigned, joined Russell as the most notable no-shows.

“We’re making a lot of progress right now with all of them and extremely close on some,” Kiffin said. “But we are expecting everybody to be in camp. We’d like everybody to be here tomorrow when we start practicing.”

On Calvin, the league also doesn't allow restructuring of rookie contracts for a year after they have been entered into. Interesting situation there all around.

i don't care who does what, JRuss needs to be in camp, NOW!! Each day he misses, he falls behind. Too many kids have held during their first camp and never gained ground, ala Blair Thomas and Akili Smith. I sure don't want to this end that way! I am VERY concerned about the JRuss situation.

Agreed... but I'm not sure if the Raiders aren't partly or even mostly to blame for this. I've read somewhere that the Raiders have had as many as a half dozen people working on the contract. Sounds like an administrative cluster fuck in the Raiders FO. If it's true that Russell isn't even in California right now, you wonder if this is going to get fixed any time soon.

The last thing I read was the he was sittin' on lazy ass in Mobile, Ala waiting for word. The kid should be sittin' in a Holiday Inn Express in Napa right now waiting to get smarter than he is and ready to get to work when the call comes! This is simple BS from an over priced college kid and his greedy agent. I smell a bust in the future.......:shakehead:

Sounds to me like the team's throwing all its resources at this trying to get it resolved. We've never had a #1 pick so we've never dealt with this kind of money before. It's an extremely complex deal.

Can't these rookies take out an insurance policy so they can participate in camp without a contract?

I thought I'd heard of some guys doing that in the past...

Part of the problem with signing Russell is Calvin Johnson. From strictly a business standpoint, the agents for DR are waiting to see what DJ get's first.

The Raiders would do well to be in the 28 million guarenteed range IMO.

Rookie cap - there is your solution. Surprised this hasn't happened by now quite frankly.

Don't buy it for a second. We've had a #2 pick that got big money. This is nothing new. I think I've read "extremely complex deal" at least 37 times in the last two days. It almost makes me miss our "explosive offense" that Kiffin was throwing around all spring.

As tempting as it is to throw Russell under the bus for this holdout, I'm still skeptical of the Raiders FO right now. I'm still willing to give Russell the benefit of the doubt... even if his ass is still in Alabama.

Poor Detroit. No matter what they do they get screwed. Bwahahaha.

:pound:

I'm with 'ya bro. I'm not all that sure it's that complicated. Isn't it about what happened last year + added some cheese and get the guy signed? At this point it ain't brain surgery -- the Raiders FO is probably all fudged up.

Git 'r done.

OH bah already. Please, the Raiders are taking the right approach to this signing. If the 6 negotiaters result in saving a few million than the approach we are taking makes perfect sense. Al Davis is the MASTER at this shit.

Just curious...when is Russell an official holdout?

Kiffin's lip service about how hard they are working on this aside...ummm...just sayin'. I just don't see why this is so difficult. It's going to cost what it costs. The structure is pretty much setup and most teams know what they will have to pay as do the player's agents. Al's trying to save a few million? OK...

I think if it slides beyond Tuesday, he's officially a"holdout". If he arrives in camp prior to that, it can be easily ironed out as contract details, etc.....

I've got now problem with Russell in Alabamy. Without knowing how long this is going to take, he could run up a big bill at the Holiday Inn.

I am firmly in the 'let him back-up for a while' camp so this doesn't bother me at all. I'd love nothing more than to see Walter have a good year and make JR beat him out of the lineup. As KK says, Competition is Good!
