Ex-49er Newberry says he'll try to resume career with Raiders

The 49ers believe Jeremy Newberry's playing days are over. The 30-year-old center thinks differently and said Tuesday that if he can't play in San Francisco, he'll turn his attention slightly eastward and try to play for the Raiders.

"The situation would be prefect for me," Newberry said. "San Francisco obviously is my first choice. But the Raiders would be a very good situation."

Newberry noted that Greg Knapp, an assistant coach in San Francisco when Newberry went to Pro Bowls in 2001 and 2002, is Oakland's new offensive coordinator, and he said he's encouraged that Tom Cable, Newberry's offensive line coach at Cal, is considering joining the Raiders as their offensive line coach.

The chances of playing a 10th season for the 49ers were doused this week when the team notified Newberry's agent that they would not offer Newberry a new contract. Newberry has undergone microfracture surgery on both knees in recent years and did not play a snap for the team in 2006.

In a telephone interview, Newberry said offensive line coach George Warhop wanted him back with the 49ers in 2007, but coach Mike Nolan thought differently. Asked if Nolan wanted to save him the agony of going through another painful and disappointing training camp, Newberry said he didn't feel that was the case.

"I'm fine, I'm healthy, I'm ready to play," he said. "They want to get younger on the offensive line."
 
i'm happy with all the NFL experienced hires. i'd hate to have a group of college frat boys coaches.
 
I read the Bears will be targeting Steinbach as they want to get younger on the line and he apparently lives about 35 miles away from Chicago.

I'm wondering about Eatman. With Cable on board and an expected switch to zone blocking how much sense does it make to have Eatman around?

this would be a major grab if we nabbed him.
 
I wouldn't want to rely on a guy coming off two microfracture procedures, but providing he can still move around, at the least he'd give us a veteran presence who is very familiar with the blocking scheme even if it's as a backup...
 
I think it would be tough for him to make the 53-man roster as a backup as our long-snapper is most likely going to be a center. I'm not sure Kiffin is going to carry 10 offensive lineman like Shell.

I think hes got a great chance to make the lineup...

hes familiar with the scheme... Treu has been less impressive on his LS. etc etc.

Right now the guys I've got penciled as targets in FA

Eric Steinbach

If we land 2 of the 3 along with Newberry and say Staley/Kahil in the draft we can make a good line of that and existing parts. We'd have good depth too.
 
So outbid the Skins for Dockery and probably the Bears for Steinbach and Cowboys for Columbo. I'm not liking our chances. The Cowboys and Redskins are on another level when it comes to signing free agents. We can't hang with those boys.

Steinbach knows Gallery and we can offer him BANK. He needs to sit down with coach kiffin the convincer and hell be ready to fuck up these sorry ass AFC west DT's. He needs to be paid well.
 
Steinbach will have maybe 10+ teams pursuing him. And most of them have more cap space then us. As far as the Gallery connection we're assuming Gallery would be trying to recruit him but maybe the opposite happens. Its not like Gallery can tell him what a fantastic place this is and how great his career has gone here in Oakland.

But his chances of being arrested get cut in half if he leaves cinci!
 
I wouldn't mind bringing in Newberry assuming his knees are ok. He's not going to command a lot and he wants to play for us.
 
I've resigned myself to the notion that Eric Steinbach wouldn't give us the time of day, nor should he. While we're in good shape cap-wise, this isn't a desireable place to come as a Free Agent when you have teams like Chicago, Baltimore, Miami, and New Orleans waiting to jump at Steinbach.

While Steinbach is definitely the best Free Agent offensive lineman available I'd be pretty happy if the Raiders could somehow pluck Andre Gurode from the Cowboys. He can play either C or OG. Diehlman would be a nice steal from the Chargers as well.

My primary concern on this line is RT and there doesn't seem to be a great RT out there in FA this year. Like HB, I was hoping Al would throw some cash towards Jon Runyan last year but that didn't happen. I'm starting to think it wouldn't be a bad idea to try McQuistan at RT and draft a hedge bet in round 2 or 3 (Ugoh, Staley, etc.).
 
I wonder what it would take to bring Runyan in for a season or two? He'd be an excellent stop gap and mentor to one of the younger guys. He's almost never hurt to boot. I'd be willing to off up a 4th or 5th rounder.

I'm not even getting my hopes up for bringing in a stud like Steinbach.

Did he play last year? If not someone clue me in on what his prior injuries were?
 
He's had major surgery on both knees and missed all of last season. HB posted the article on the previous page. I just like the fact that he wants to play for us but his injury issues are obviously a concern.
 
It's not about money with Runyan, he's an East Coast/Philly guy and his family is comfortable.

Kelly Skipper joins The Oakland Raiders as assistant offensive line coach.


Kelly Skipper joins The Oakland Raiders as assistant offensive line coach.
Skipper, 39, has 18 years of coaching experience and has served as an offensive coordinator at the NCAA Division I level. He also spent two summers, one with Seattle and one with Washington, as an NFL minority coaching fellowship intern.

"Kelly and I have had a longstanding relationship in coaching and I am extremely pleased to have him join our staff with the Raiders," said Raiders Head Coach Lane Kiffin. "Kelly's overall knowledge of the game will assist Tom Cable in developing our offensive line."

Skipper coached running backs and special teams at Washington State for the past four seasons. From 1998-2002, Skipper was on the coaching staff at UCLA, where he was offensive coordinator from 2001-02.

He was an assistant at Fresno State, his alma mater, from 1989-97, beginning his coaching career as a graduate assistant before becoming a full-time assistant in 1991 handling running backs and return specialists and serving as recruiting coordinator.

Skipper's father Jim is a longtime NFL assistant and was head coach of the XFL's San Francisco franchise.

The Brawley, California native played running back at Fresno State and rushed for 2,237 career yards to rank in the Bulldog top 10 list. He also scored 28 career touchdowns during his college career when Fresno State went 36-9-1. As a senior, Skipper was a first team All-Big West running back and earned Associated Press All-America honorable mention honors. He earned a degree in business from Fresno State in 1989.
 
I guess its pretty apparent now that Al gave Kiffin the power to snuff out every single offensive coach from last year. I guess the only thing is he has to find a suitable replacement before the axe can be dropped on some of these guys.

The way our offensive line looked last year. Im glad they are all gone.
