Cable Joins Raiders Coaching Staff
February 6, 2007

Tom Cable joins the Raiders coaching staff as offensive line coach.

Raiders.com
Tom Cable, who has 20 years of coaching experience, including four as a head coach at the college level, joins the Raiders as offensive line coach.
"I have been familiar with Tom for quite some time now and he has a great offensive mind both as a line coach and as a coordinator," said Raiders Head Coach Lane Kiffin. "Coming off a season in which he oversaw the league's best run game, we are extremely pleased to have him. Greg Knapp and Tom can hit the ground running as they are so familiar with one another and both are clear in terms of exactly what I am looking for in an offense."

Cable, 42, spent the past season as offensive line coach for the Atlanta Falcons. Cable coached a unit that helped the Falcons lead the NFL in rushing in 2006. From 2004-05, Cable was both the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at UCLA, where he helped develop one of the most productive offensive units in the nation.

Cable was head coach of the University of Idaho from 2001-03. During his tenure at Idaho, his teams averaged 424.1 yards of total offense per game. Cable spent two years at the University of Colorado. In 1998, he served as the offensive line coach and the following year was promoted to offensive coordinator. Under his direction, the Buffaloes' offense was ranked 14th in the nation, averaging 424.9 yards per game.

He spent six seasons (1992-97) as offensive line coach at the University of California. Cable began his coaching career at his alma mater, serving as a graduate assistant at Idaho in 1987 and 1988. He was a graduate assistant at San Diego State in 1989, defensive line coach at Cal State Fullerton in 1990 and offensive line at Nevada-Las Vegas in 1991.

Cable played four years at Idaho, three as a starting guard, and spent one season with the Indianapolis Colts before beginning his coaching career.

Our staff is impressive so far. I really think we are going to take a serious look at Adrian Peterson. We really need to run the ball and Lamont is so overpaid. Knapp and Cable seem to like the faster backs since they used W.Dunn and J.Norwood. Fargas should be happy right about now. What positions are left to fill? ST's?

Call up your Bronco fan friends and neighbors and get your really good cut-block jokes in sooner rather than later, my friends...

This is good news for two reasons, IMO.

1) He's got major experience to help with Kiffin's youth and inexperience. The guy has HC'ed and OC'ed before and has led some VERY successful offenses.

2) He always brings a quality running scheme and Atl. has been very successful in recent years in that aspect...

I like it.

Overall staff at this point:

8/10.

Very pleased.

Cable makes key addition

I like the way the coaching staff is shaping up. Cable is great as an O Line coach, horrible as a head coach though. Fine with me - let him do what he knows. Hello zone blocking!

Lane Kiffin: Head Coach

Greg Knapp: Offensive Coordinator
Rob Ryan: Defensive Coordinator
Jeff Fish: Strength and Conditioning

Willie Brown: Defensive Backs, Squad Development
Tom Cable: Offensive Line
Irv Eatman: Co-Offensive Line
Don Martindale: Linebackers
George Martinez: Quality Control, Defense
Jim McElwain: Quarterbacks
Keith Millard: Defensive Line
Skip Peete: Running Backs
Darren Perry: Defensive Backs
Darryl Sims: Assistant Defensive Line

Notice that Cable does not have a Co- next to his title. A very subtle way of showing who is in charge.
Now if we can just lure away the Bears ST Coach...

Jeff Fish: Strength and Conditioning

If our offensive lines lack of in the phone booth strength is any indication, this guy needs to go... As hard as Kiffen's been looking at coaches with QB handling abilities, I would imagine Jim McElwain is also as good as gone... and I had heard last week that Tom Rathman already signed a contract to replace Skip Peete as RB coach, but I guess we'll see soon enough...

I think we'll take a look at him but it's going to be real hard to pass on Ja Russ. My gut is that Al is going to trade back up into the first and try to snag a RB. MLynch would be my guess or possibly Mike Bush. This is of course assuming we don't pull a deal for Portis or something. I don't see us going into next season with LJ and Fargas, especially with LJ's cap number at like 7 mill.

That's a good point HB. Overall, I'm pleased with the coaching selections thus far and I like the continuity factor bringing in both Knapp and Cable.

Behind Cable's O-Line

Here's some stats about Cable's offensive past. He sure had no Freakin defense in Idaho, But his offensive numbers are pretty consistantly high (like me).

Wouldnt hurt my feeling if the staff feels like JR is the man. I guess i finally trust that the staff/Al will make a good choice. I am rady to dump Lamountain unless he want to re-strucure his overpriced contract. He is coming off a bad knee injury. I would rather have A.Green or a faster RB for less. I would take C.Buckhalter from philly over LJ right now, he would cost 1/20th as much.

It's hard not to get excited about what a back like Peterson would do in a blocking scheme like that. Though I still think the bigger determining factor will be what Kiffin sees on tape from both Walter and Tuis... I think Kiffin is really going to have to be sold on either Tuis or Walter if he is going to turn around and try to persuade Davis to trade down for Peterson. Also makes you wonder just how much the Browns would be willing to give up to take JRuss.

I read they were really intersted in AP as well. I think its safe to say the Browns and Oakland both have JR and AP a close 1 & 2 on their respective charts right now. I think the combine will make all the difference. If AP can blaze a 4.3 like some site's are claiming he might, its a done deal. But i see him laying down more like a 4.42 or something and testing great. JaMarcus will also be hard to pass up if he throws the ball two times as far as Quinn and shows up faster and lighter than 260. Either way having #1 is great becasue if it becomes clear we are in the drivers seat.

Something Fishy

Rathman would certainly make a great addition, and it doesn't seem that Peete is good fit for the scheme we seem to be setting up. I read somewhere that Jeff Fish is protected by AL - one of his guys. He forced him on Art and now Lane. Weird fact - When Lane was hired the three names that went up to the top of the Raiders coaching page were Lane, Rob and Jeff. He's still there now...

So how many lineman get kicked to the curb? Slaughter, Walker and Hulsey are all free agents and they seem to be horrid fits for the scheme this guy used in Atlanta.

O-Line changes

So how many lineman get kicked to the curb? Slaughter, Walker (I know he's a FA) and Hulsey would seem to be a horrid fits for the blocking scheme this guy was using in Atlanta. I wonder how many of those Falcon lineman get sent packing by Petrino.

O-Line Free Agents in Atlanta
Claxton, Ben OG ERFA
King, Austin C UFA

O-Line Free agents who use the same scheme:
Dwayne Carswell, UFA, Denver Broncos
Leonard Davis UFA Arizona Cardinals
Derrick Dockery, UFA, Washington Redskins

Carswell is playing in the arena league, he's done.

Davis and Dockery would be nice, but Claxton and King...I dunno about those two too much.

Bout friggin time. It was like waiting for Guns N Roses new album.

Steinbach could do it i always see him pulling and such. He seems very athletic. J.Staley would be a good second round choice he is basically a player form the same mold as Gallery, a big former tight end.

If we are going zone blocking, that might mean Leonard Davis is a no-go. Personally, I didn't like our odds. Figure he can get the same money from a better team.

Staley makes a ton of sense for this team.

One other consideration is that this schemes doesn't need 1st and 2nd rounders to make it work. The Broncos had a line of 2nd day picks blocking for Terrell Davis.

Thats good we have enough high picks #2 overall gallery #34 Grove and 3rd round Mullet.
