This kind of reminds me of Porter's sports hernia injury a few years back that the Raiders claimed was an abdominal strain and was week to week. Well a good friend of mine who is on staff at UCSF kept telling me it was sports hernia while the Raiders said it was an abdominal pull... and after multiple second opinions, it was indeed sports hernia...

Anyways........ my bud keeps telling me "Burgess blew his achilles". I keep telling him I've got to see it to believe it... No way the Raiders could "miss" this as a calf injury. According to him it's not a complete tear like the one Curry has experienced... but a partial tear that even though he can still move on, is going to require surgery.... but that's his medical opinion and there are people on his staff that disagree.

Apparently he's still getting several second opinions.

Anyway here's the first internet report / rumor / or whatever... that I've seen on it:

PFW said:
  • There are growing concerns in Oakland over the Achilles strain that continues to sideline DE Derrick Burgess, the Raiders’ one proven pass rusher. Burgess relies heavily on his quick first step on the edge, and if the Achilles isn’t allowed to properly heal, it could be something that stays with him for an extended period of time.
  • As they continue to gain experience, the Raiders’ young LB tandem of Kirk Morrison and Thomas Howard, in their third and second years, respectively, is getting more freedom from the coaching staff, which has resulted in big plays. Both have displayed a real knack for pass coverage and are proving to be very instinctual, but our sources feel they’d be even more effective if they were allowed to blitz more.

BTW... nice take on our LBs... that I agree 1000% on.

PFW's word is an endless grain of salt. But you never know. Would suck if it were true. At the same time its a chance for other guys to step up and forces Ryan to create more blitzes.

Although he already got a nice contract, it would suck if he had to have this injury right before he would've gotten another one. Hopefully it's not too bad and he'll be given proper time to fully heal.

I would shutdown Burgess for the year and have him get surgery if this is true. I hope it isnt.

Achilles'...Curry...patience. Lots and lots of patience.

Smoke ----> Fire.

Probably more truth to it than any of us want to admit.

Remember the mysterious injury that kept E-Rock on the sidelines for weeks some years back? Same kind of deal. Somebody isn't be forthright for whatever reason.

IN before the first "we should have kept Moses" post!... :D

Oh boy... please don't be true... Wonder if Sapp can be an effective 43 DE since he lost all that weight... Ryan did run him out there a few times early in the 1st vs the Browns...

Time for Kiff to get on the phone to SC and get Carroll's 43 under blueprint where one of the DE's plays in a two point stance... Take advantage of Chris Clemmons ability to play both LB and DE...

He's back

ALAMEDA – Derrick Burgess assumed his usual place in the front of the line for position drills at practice.

The Pro Bowl defensive end missed the last two weeks of practice and two games with a right calf injury that occurred in the fourth quarter of the Raiders’ Week 2 loss at Denver.

Burgess’ return to the lineup would aid the pass rush significantly. Burgess is also an underrated run defender.

He’s also one of the team’s leaders. Defenders often cite Burgess’ presence, as a reason the unit stays loose.

Two key players not at practice were quarterback Josh McCown and running back LaMont Jordan.

McCown came out to practice late and is still wearing a walking boot on his left foot.

The longer McCown wears the boot, the longer Lane Kiffin has to wait before reopening the why Daunte Culpepper isn’t the clear No. 1 quarterback debate.

You can bet once McCown can practice, Kiffin will wait a while before declaring a starting quarterback.

Kiffin had players congratulate Culpepper on being named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week after team stretching.

Jordan didn’t make it to the field during the portion of practice open to the media.

Jordan hurt his back in against Miami and was on crutches after the game.

Dominic Rhodes practiced after missing the first four weeks because of his suspension for violating the NFL substance abuse policy.

Rhodes and Justin Fargas are the primary running backs with Jordan out.

Sweet. I thought Dark Overlord Al Davis was somehow gaining an advantage by holding back the truth about DB's torn achillies? Who ever reported that nonsense should apologize.

I don't see any indicators that Burgess' injury is "Season ending". Serious, yes. But that's why he didn't play against Miami. We need him. We didn't need to rush him back, but he'll be BACK IN BLACK soon. Just wait and see. He's got the week to heal and then the off week. He'll be kickin' ass in San Diego when we face the Chargers.

GO RAIDERS!

Its PFW, grain of salt news damnit. You guys follow that "where theres smoke" stuff way too much. :D

The more I know Kiffin, the more I see and appreciate his deceptiveness. It works. All year, no team has know who the hell to prepare for. Now, no one knows if Jordan is healthy, or, if Dominic will start week 6, or if it will be Fargas, or Culpepper, or McCown...

I like it. Keeping the cards close to the vest is always, ALWAYS, ALWAYS a good thing. And a Raider staple.;)
