Wilson's Broncos career is over. The Broncos will release the former defensive captain today, according to a source close to the situation.

A news conference is scheduled at 2 p.m. to discuss Wilson's future at the Denver office of Wilson's agent, Peter Schaffer.

There is a strong chance Wilson, 29, may not play in 2007 and that he could decide to end his career.

The five-time Pro Bowl selection suffered a neck injury Dec. 3 against Seattle. He was taken off the field on a stretcher and spent a short time at a local hospital before being released. Wilson then came back to finish the season.

However, on March 23, he failed a physical with the New York Giants, who nixed a proposed trade from Denver. Wilson subsequently saw a specialist in Los Angeles who confirmed the injury.

Wilson was a first-round draft choice out of Tennessee in 1999. He quickly became a fierce vocal leader and a fan favorite. Wilson was voted a starter for the Pro Bowl this past season, but he didn't play because of he had postseason thumb surgery.

If his career is indeed over, that's sad. While he was a Bronco, Al Wilson was a guy who was an absolute beast of an MLB and a guy that should be respected for his play and his character, IMO.

It's nice to see something negatively impact the Donkeys, but I'm saddened if this is the end for Al Wilson.

God that guy would destroy us.....he was our other "Junior Seau"....Hell of a player who played lights out against us.

im hoping its not the end.... if hed come play some WLB or we do another shift to put him at MLB, Morrison at Will and Howard at sam.... whoooo daddy

Natty summed it up. I hate to see the man's career end. But it's nice to see Denver lose him.

The Seau comparison is a good one. Those two gave us years and years of hell.

Honestly, I'm hoping he spends his sunset years watching the NFL on DirecTV just like me. F**K th Broncos and all who hold them dear. Long Live da Raiduuhs.

He was on NFLN earlier, said he still wants to play

I could totally see Al Davis taking a flyer on Al Wilson in late August. Easily. Dude is a tough, emotional leader. I think he'd fit in well with guys like Warren Sapp, Derrick Burgess, etc.

Love to see him come in here with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove. With an incentive laden deal, he's definitely worth a look. Would give us undoubtedly one of the best LB units in the league if he's still able to play. Would probably have us looking at a 3-4 alignment with some serious speed.

Good point and having a guy like Tommy Kelly (though many in Raider Nation don't like him) would allow RR to jump between 3/4 & 4/3 more easily.

Al Wilson would also provide great depth at not only MLB, but he could probably play a little SAM in place of Sam Williams - at least in the short term.

Who doesn't like Tommy Kelly? I don't think he should be playing DT, but I still freakin' love the guy.

I've seen lots of people say negative things about TK, whether he's playing DE or DT. BTW, I agree that he is better at DE.
