Broncos' salary cap cuts progressing
By Bill Williamson
Denver Post Staff Writer
With free agency approaching, the Broncos are in contact with their remaining players who are set to hit the open market and continue to pare down excess salary cap.
Much of the front-office time is being spent on restructuring of veterans' contracts to help the team erase more than $20 million in salary cap overage. About half the extra cap space is in voided contracts.
The rest of the cap space is being taken care of as the team restructures several contracts. The high-profile restructurings are being done with defensive ends Trevor Pryce and Courtney Brown.
Broncos general manager Ted Sundquist said he has been pleased with the progress of the restructuring and doesn't foresee any significant issues, nor does he expect the team to be forced into cutting any veterans over salary issues by the time free agency begins March 3.
"We're right on schedule," Sundquist said. "We will be under the salary cap when the league season begins."
The restructuring is being done so the team can re-sign its free agents. At this point, it appears re-signing free agents and the draft - Denver has the 22nd and 29th picks in the first round - will be the focus of the offseason.
The Broncos are in frequent contact with the agents of key free agents left tackle Matt Lepsis and defensive tackle Gerard Warren. Still, negotiations will likely heat up with both players this week at the NFL combine in Indianapolis.
Denver is close to agreeing to an extension with backup defensive end John Engelberger. A deal could be done by Monday.
