Markus Curry, who had recently been demoted to the Chargers' practice squad, was arrested yesterday on suspicion of domestic violence.

He was released by the team hours later.

Police said Curry, 25, was pulled over and arrested on Interstate 805 near Plaza Boulevard in National City at 11:23 a.m.
Police were notified when Curry drove out of a parking structure at 600 Market St. earlier in the morning, said police spokeswoman Monica Muñoz.

“The attendant was told that if this particular vehicle left, to call the police, she said.

No other information about the incident was released.

Curry, a cornerback who began the season on the roster, was cut Sept. 30. He was signed to the practice squad Oct. 3.

Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith would not confirm Curry's release was because of his arrest.

“There are many reasons why a player is released,” Smith said.

However, the swiftness of the action left little doubt. Smith has been deeply disturbed by the rash of run-ins with the law Chargers players have had in recent months.

The spate began in April when linebacker Shaun Phillips was arrested on suspicion of obstructing or resisting an officer in the performance of his duty after an altercation downtown. A little more than a week later, linebacker Steve Foley was arrested in April on suspicion of resisting arrest, battery on a police officer and being drunk in public. Charges against both players were dropped.

On Sept. 3, Foley was shot by an off-duty police officer after the officer had followed him home because he suspected Foley of driving while intoxicated. Foley has not been charged in that incident but will miss at least this season while recovering from multiple injuries.

Two weeks ago, safety Terrence Kiel was arrested at the Chargers facility and faces five felony counts stemming from his allegedly shipping codeine-based cough syrup to Texas.

Staff writer Karen Kucher contributed to this report.
