Bernard Petrino to Atlanta

I had heard the only reason it didn't get done last year with Bernard was that Al wouldn't come off that two year guarantee/Raiders hold the option for a third.... I imagine the Falcons guaranteed alot more money than we offered to...
This makes perfect sense to me. Al always wants to give coaches a 2 year deal with a club option for a third. That's OK when you're talking retread trash like Norv Turner and Art Shell but top prospects like Petrino, Tedford and even Pat Hill for that matter aren't going to lay their future on the line with the Raiders without more security. You know -- like a 4 year deal with the coach having an option on year five. Damn Al wake up.

Which ones? I dispute that rumor unless theres some proven names. Of course why would it matter if he wanted the job. It didnt matter when ATL came calling. But supposedly its not the same thing. Something I just dont agree with.

If it didn't matter he wouldn't have done this.

Petrino played this one brilliantly, keeping his name under radar to preserve his recruiting leverage if he stayed put.

He would have just boldly came out and declared he was looking for an NFL job. Come and get me.

As with most things in life, actions speak louder than words. Petrino's Louisville Cardinals turned some heads and as people looked into Petrino further they saw what Al Davis already saw. Davis just didn't git'r done. Sadly that's the difference between the clown in Atl and our own situation in Oakland. When you have identified the target you have to pull the trigger FAST.

5-year 24 million is what I'm reading.

I'm telling you that ToddBridgesdaRaider is what cost us this guy last year.

Who is he?

Unfortunately it seems like we are using a flintlock with a barrel full of mud.

That's the one thing I wish Al Davis would catch up with the times on ... Damn, dude, pay your f'n coach what the market bares, and maybe we won't have so much instabiltiy.

This is why I try not to get my hopes up for a legit coaching candidate. It's the same shit every time we fire a coach. Just give the gig to RR and be done with it.

:D

I was perusing the Atlanta message board and they aren't all that happy with the Petrino hiring and there was actually a mini John "Mastermind" Shoop for head coach jihad... He's from the area or something...

Different strokes, I guess...

Funny. Atlanta should be where the Raiders have been and they'd be stoked that Bernard is in the house.

I'm still hanging on, albeit by a thread, to the Jeff Tedford jihad. My sources have been pretty on target so far. (Shell/Pagano).

Also heard on ESPN radio this morning more grumblings about Charlie Weis maybe wanting to go to the NFL. No mention of Oakland but there are lots of reasons that make it good timing for Weis.

Bernard already has his OC:

JACKSON HEADING TO ATLANTA

Mark Curnutte of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Bengals receivers coach Hue Jackson is slated to become the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons under new coach Bobby Petrino.

Jackson and Petrino, Curnutte writes, were on the same staff at Arizona State for two seasons, in 1992 and 1993.

Jackson is under contract with the Bengals through the 2007. The team is not required to release Jackson from his obligations, even if the move results in a promotion -- unless the promotion is to head coach.

Ironically, in 2003 the Falcons refused to allow the Bengals to interview secondary coach Emmitt Thomas for the position of defensive coordinator under Cincinnati coach Marvin Lewis.

We believe that it's a bad rule. Assistant coaches should not be denied the opportunity to better themselves.

Some league insiders contend (and it's a good point) that assistant coaches who want to be able to leave to become coordinators elsewhere should sign only one-year contracts. By doing so, however, they would lose their security.

Even with the rule that's currently on the books, we prefer the Bengals' approach. By creating an environment in which people who do a good job will be allowed to pursue their reward elsewhere, a team is more likely to lure people who are motivated to pursue such promotions. Which means that they'll do a good job while they are with the team. And then it will be easier to fill their spot with someone who is driven and competent.

Just promote Ryan and hire Sarkisian to be the OC, and get it over with.

This seems like the most likely thing to happen.

At least until the article comes out that details Jim Fassel's trip to Oakland.

For what it's worth........

I asked Petrino why he didn't take the Raiders job last year when it was offered. Smart move by him, in retrospect, because here he is in a semi-stable environment, with a five-year, $24-million contract, in an area his family wants to live. "I don't think it was the right job for me,'' he said of Oakland.

Delicately. Are you kidding? It might not be the right job for anyone. But by waiting, Petrino got a better deal with a better future.

"This thing happened fast,'' he said. "I didn't even talk to them [the Falcons] 'til Sunday.''

By Sunday night, he was hired. "With college coaches,'' said GM Rich McKay, "because they can be damaged so much by it coming out that they're interviewing for a job, we wanted to make sure we had all our research done and then we'd be in position to make a quick decision if we had to.''
