Bernard Petrino to Atlanta

PETRINO THE NEXT FALCONS COACH

Only a couple of days after he predicted that NFL teams would shy away from college coaches after Nick Saban fled the Fins for Alabama, ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports that the Falcons are targeting Louisville coach Bobby Petrino.

While Pasquarelli reports that the deal isn't done, someone apparently hasn't told Petrino, given that he's already hiring his staff.

Petrino played this one brilliantly, keeping his name under radar to preserve his recruiting leverage if he stayed put.

On the flip side, Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey has made no bones about his upcoming interview with the Dolphins, which is the equivalent of giving up on any chance of convincing recruits to become Yellow Jackets.

Secrecy. We lost Petrino last year because his interview got leaked. If that didn't get leaked Petrino's recruiting class remains in the dark. And Al could have continued his slow pace in checking out other candidates. He would have eventually got back to Petrino and offered him the job.

While its a rumor at this point i really hope its not true... I've made it clear he was my #1 choice.

Gotta give it to that Falcon owner... His last two coaching searches have shown him target his choices quickly and move aggressively to get hot candidates... be interesting to see what kind of contract Petrino got....

Meanwhile, I'm hoping we have some semblance of a plan that moves faster than the snail pace we're accustomed to...

5-year 24 million is what I'm reading.

I'm telling you that ToddBridgesdaRaider is what cost us this guy last year.

Second time they've nabbed a guy we wanted who gave us the cold shoulder. As much as Al had a hard on for him. His excuse was bs and it shows. Please Vick kill him harder than you killed Mora Jr.

cost us? dont know about anything but us as an organization costing us. He had no desire to coach in Oakland ever at any point i think, but he does want to look humble so excuses and polite "no thank you's" ensue.

Bullshit. If he had no interest he wouldn't have got on an airplane last year and flew out to Alameda and spent a day getting grilled by Al Davis. The AD at Lousiville has publicy said when he heard about the interview he thought Petrino was gone.

I don't know... a couple radio guys out here actually were talking about this a few hours ago. They seem convinced that Petrino used the Raiders' interest in him as leverage to get some serious looks in '07.

Almost comparable to what Payton did. Payton had no interest in coming here from day 1, but then used the publicity of turning down Davis' offer into becoming a legit HC candidate the next go round.

Exactly! People arent as honest happy as you might give them credit for. If Petrino turns down Al Davis accomodations, it hurts his rep. When he respectfully declines and so politely that Al Davis happily admits he was after him, he improves his rep.

Its like the interacting other sex, women chase harder when someone else wants you and vice versa. It does him no good to spurn us when we offer to woo him.

Well, the story I've read is once the interview was leaked his recruits panicked. He had 1 5-star and about 5 or 6 4-star recruits that hadn't signed their letters yet. So the story is he gave AD a 24-hour window to offer him the job. It didn't come so he took his name out of consideration and re-committed to Lousiville.

So what does it mean to the recruits for 2007? its a lame excuse that you can recycle all day I personally think. Also I heard he changed it to he wanted to wait on his son to graduate. As you can see thats bs.

He doesn't have to worry about the 2007 recruits. He got the job and is moving on. Last year we put him in the position where his recruits were panicking and he didn't have the job. What was he supposed to do? Keep waiting and have his recruits bail on him and then risk not getting the job.

ToddBridgesdaRaider...that's kinda funny.

You frequent that site, don't you? You telling me that you're not a card carrying Willistine?

I can't agree with that. I get the feeling that you dont wanna believe that he'd do something like that. IMO its by far more believable that he used us to further his career.

Let me ask you this. Do you think he would turn down a meet with Al Davis just because he didnt want the job?

Well I'm upset. Cocksucker. He had Raiders written all over him and I think with the talent we have and are going to get Petrino could have made this work.

Fuck him.

hell the Jeff Tedford jihad is still alive and kickin'... for now. :(

You mean do a Cam Cameron? I bet there has been plenty of guys that have turned down the interview offer. And as for Petrino taking a day or 2 in January when your in a recruiting battle with other schools to fly out to Cali to interview is a big luxury. Word is he lost a couple of good recruits over it. Keeping those recruits and winning a national title this year would have enhanced his prospects more then interviewing with the Raiders.

I'm not premium. And I've gotten a few warnings for posting stuff that a mod don't like. But I'm fairly pro-Al Davis so I think I'm safe from the hall of shame forum.

I had heard the only reason it didn't get done last year with Bernard was that Al wouldn't come off that two year guarantee/Raiders hold the option for a third.... I imagine the Falcons guaranteed alot more money than we offered to...

If Al wants a top tier 'hot' coach, he's going to have to give up trying to get people at blue light K-Mart prices...

Ok, how does that make Petrino doing it unlikely? Cam works for an NFL team as a coordinator, Petrino is now an NFL coach quicker than him. Again sounds like he got alot out of just talking to us. I guess Cam shoulda played the same drum.;)

Which ones? I dispute that rumor unless theres some proven names. Of course why would it matter if he wanted the job. It didnt matter when ATL came calling. But supposedly its not the same thing. Something I just dont agree with.

Agree to disagree about Petrino. IMO its a business and he played his cards(no pun intended) at our expense just right.:)

Good for Atlanta though, I hope we are able to get somebody worth something as OC. My HC jihad is being spent on Ryan. :)
