ESPN's John Clayton reports that Bobby Petrino has resigned as Falcons coach to take the Arkansas head coaching job.

Rough couple days for Arthur Blank. It's uncertain whether Petrino will coach the rest of the season, but these are certainly his last days in the NFL. Petrino is reportedly taking a significant paycut to leave, which pretty much says it all. Petrino's scheme never really took hold in Atlanta, so it's hard to project much fantasy impact. Falcons Coach Bobby Petrino abruptly resigned Tuesday as head coach to take the head coaching job at Arkansas, the Falcons confirmed to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Petrino called about 5:45 p.m. and resigned.

Owner Arthur Blank said he spoke to Petrino on Monday, and that Petrino assured him that he would be back for his second season with the team.

"I feel real fortunate that we have a terrific guy leading our football team," Blank said on Monday. "Our CEO, our coach Bobby Petrino, has done a terrific job dealing with adversity this year. He's proven to me that he's a better head coach than I ever thought he was going to be, dealing with the set of cards that unfolded this year."

I was definitely wrong about Bernard... If he wilted under a puppy dog like Blank in Atlanta, Al would have had him in the fetal position bawling his eyes out by week 5 last year... The guy sure isn't shy about getting side deals done on the down low while still collecting a paycheck from someone else is he?...

Wonder who Atlanta will target as their next guy?... All things considered, it would seem to be a pretty good time for Blank to go out and get a guy like Cower or Marty even... May be a good spot for Mike Singletary as well...

I would run...not walk....run to the phone and place a call to the 49ers and ask for permission to talk to Mike Singletary about the HC position.

Another example of why taking a college coach with no pro experience is a big time risk....

That said I really can't blame Petrino. That situation in Atlanta is the equivalent of coaching suicide. That Michael Vick cloud will be hanging over that lockeroom until every last one of his former teammates still going to bat for him is shipped out of town. There's not a coach on this planet that could get paid enough to walk into that fire.

On the flip side.... Bones, you might not want to speak to soon. A certain rookie coach for a certain AFC West team has made it loud in clear in some circles that he wants out.........

We'll see but I'm not buying it. I thnk Kiffin wants to show everybody that he can build a winner and coach a winner...Oakland is as good a statement place to do it as any place.

Petrino is a quitter in the worse sense of the word. As HBoy pointed out he was happy to take a paycheck from Louisville while cutting a deal with Atlanta and now with Arkansas. What a complete tool. Recruiting for Arkansas should be a barrel of laughs.
 
Usually NFL coaches are ruthless, while College coaches play a human development process. Amateur sport helps to create good citizens (supposedly), while the pro does exactly the contrary.

NFL was too much for Petrino. Things musta been very wrong to make him leave barely a few weeks before the end. Going out like that, makes him look a little coward.

It's noticeable the difference with Kiffin. Aside the records, Kiffins the man, while Petrino ended up as a bad joke.

Petrino should be rightfully villified for this move.

Yes, Vick screwed up this season. But, as a coach, that means Petrino gets a 2007 mulligan. It also means Petrino gets to move on at the QB position, with any player he wants. Brohm, whoever. in fact, if you think about it, Vick's implosion may have been the best thing to happen to the Falcons, long term. No more hoping Vick decides to become a student of the game, waiting for his skills to evolve, his game to improve. Petrino would have been able to go into 2008 with a clean slate. Which woulda meant another mulligan, if he has a rook QB.

The guy had job security for about 3 years, thanks to Vick.

Petrino didn't think this through, and to phone in a resignation 13 games into the season, man, that's the act of a 17-year-old.


So, the guy everyone said we wanted shits the bed, and takes the job our new coach supposedly wanted. All in all, a good day.

The Raiders' Lane Kiffin, whom Razorbacks' boosters remember as the USC co-offensive coordinator who had piled up 70 and 50 points on them in 2005 and '06, was at the top of the list, until his employer, Al Davis, demanded too much of a payoff. :rolleyes:

Those who know Kiffin well say he desperately wanted the Arkansas job. "More money, more control," was how one person put it.

Word was, Kiffin thought he was back at the top of the Razorbacks' list Tuesday morning. But oh, how the day unfolded.

I usually dismiss what Nancy says out of hand, well because basically she's been wrong about just about everything the past 3-4 years, but I don't doubt Arkansas had great interest and there's no doubt that Arkansas would allow Kiff both more authority and money....

Supposedly Jerry Jones was the one pushing for Lane.... Then again, Jerry Jones supposedly was the one that bought out Petrino's contract so unless Al asked for Jason Garrett and a tons of money in return, I can't see that Al "demanded too much of a payoff" to be much of a deterent for a guy like Jones if he really wanted something...
