Ryan hired as defensive coordinator Click here to find out more!
NFL.com wire reports

OAKLAND, Calif. (Feb. 11, 2004) -- Rob Ryan, who has coached in two of the last three Super Bowls, was hired as the Oakland Raiders' defensive coordinator.

Ryan has spent the past four seasons as linebackers coach for the New England Patriots.

Ryan is the third coach added to the Raiders' staff in recent months. Joe Avezzano was hired as special-teams coach. Back in January, Norv Turner replaced Bill Callahan as head coach.

Last year, Ryan's coaching helped the Patriots allow the fewest points in the NFL.
Out of all the guys we brought in then, How many had Ryan on the list of survivors? Especially after his first season. :o

My feeling back then was that Rob was going to succeed and that the trouble we had came from not providing him with the players he needed.

Well i thought he was a bad fit after the first year. Didnt look sharp at all. And of course he was left to blame for that awful picture of Brayton playing OLB that haunted my sleep. Whether or not it was his fault? Who knows. but at the time I wasnt a Rob Ryan fan at all.

I'll be the first to say I hate 3-4 defences.

I'm glad he smartened up and realized what we had.

I was really excited to have a guy who was running a superbowl caliber defense. I also was pumped that his father was Buddy "Punch out other coaches on the sideline" Ryan who lead all those great Eagle defense's. When I saw D.Grant and Brayton playing OLB I thought WTF, how could any good coach think that would work? Honestly, i was skeptical after that. But I think we can all agree, he has always looked like a Raider!

I had my concerns as well. Too much of moving guys around out of their natural positions initially, we didn't have the horses to play a 3-4 when he came on board. Thankfully we now have one of the better defensive units in the NFL and probably a testament to Ryan that we hardly lost anyone in the offseason. I just hope we can enjoy the same success on the other side of the ball.

I thought he sucked that first year. NO patience o my part. Yeah, he didn't have the horses and was trying to make something out of nothing.

Guess it worked out alright after all.

Al had a conversation with Buddy about his son where Buddy said something to the effect that he hired a great defensive coordinator. Al responded by saying something to the effect...yes, I know, I just needed to get him some players.

What a true statement that was. That first year was brutal and really we didn't have the guys for Ryan.

I am happy we have him now and hope that he doesn't get a HC gig somewhere next year, but if he has us in the top 3 again it is very possible.

I can proudly say I was a staunch Rob Ryan supporter... Right about that, completely wrong about Lamont Jordan though...

Loved the Hired then and now, because I loved his Old man and was hoping for some 4-6 type of set up or some hybrid type Defense but look like we have a real deal 4-3 set up...... then again if we actually had some other LB's and if Sapp wasn't here that may be different situation.
I think he has worked really well with the personel he has to work with better then any D-coach we have had in a long time!!!

Long Live Captian Caveman!
