Should Calvin Johnson enter the upcoming draft after his junior season (he said he’ll decide after Tech plays in the Gator Bowl), the Falcons could get that incomparable wide receiver by offering, say, their No. 1 and 2 picks, along with The Great Matt Schaub, to quarterback-impaired Oakland or Detroit. In return, the Falcons would get Johnson’s striking physical gifts (4.4 speed, sure hands, impressive strength, 45-inch vertical jump) and splendid work ethic.

They're 7-7 and would currently draft 13th. There SOS is horrid so they win the tiebreaker with just about anyone. If they lose out they could be drafting in the 7th to 11th range. Makes some sense in that they get a local guy in Calvin but also keep him away from a division rival Tampa.

So say 2nd for 8th, 41st and Schaub looks fair to me.
 
Why?

Can someone please explain to me why Shaub is such a hot commodity?

He's thrown 140 times in the NFL and completed less than half (69 making it 49.8%) for 5 TD's and 5 INT's. He only averages 6.13 per completion, so he's even throwing high percentage short passes. With a career QB rating of 65.7, I don't get it. Is he just popular because he's not Michael Vick (i.e. the haters elevating the backup).

By contrast, Walter has more attempts with a slightly higher completion %. They average the same distance per completion but Walter's horrid INT/TD (11/3) ratio buries his passer rating at 54.2. They're the same size and weight, and Walter hasn't had the O line or the extra year that Shaub has.
Forget Schaub, unless we re-trade him elsewhere (Mr. Davis, Jon Gruden is on the phone). Let's give Walter some tool and figure out what he can do.
 
If your comfortable putting one egg in the QB basket then so be it. I'd rather have some options in case Walter isn't the answer or winds up on the IR list.
 
I gotta admit... I've wondered why Schaub is carrying so much hype myself... I could see a guy like Gruden overvaluing him since Schaub played in a west coast offense at Virginia and at Atlanta...


That trade offer seems fair and possibly walking away with Marshawn Lynch and an additional 2nd is appealling, but everytime I hear Schaub mentioned, AJ Feeley with Philly pops into my head... If this rumor comes to fruition, it would mean that Atlanta would have traded away Schaub and their 2nd and 3rd round draft picks for Calvin Johnson and Ashley Lelie?


Switching draft spots with Houston in exchange for Carr could also come into play I guess...
 
What does Houston gain by moving up? Peterson I guess. Carr to me seems like he's on his way out. Its a cap wash to dump him.

Speaking of Lelie one thing that just doesn't make sense to me with the Lelie, Duckett and also the Stallworth trade is why haven't the teams locked those guys up to contract extensions? I'd be pretty pissed if we gave up a 3rd rounder for some player in August and 6 months later he signs with another team.
 
...or Shuab becomes the next Matt Hasselback. Though the latter is somewhwat overatted, he's still a pretty solid QB, better than Brooks or Walter IMO. It's a damn crapshoot.

Funny, as much as I want Lynch/Petersen, this WR is a "Screaming" Al Davis pick and I have to admit, I'm intrigued. Those physical skills with the words "work ethic" are hard to ignore.......

Well, it would be 2007 for CJ and the Lelie picks. 2006 they went after John Abraham who has only perpetuated his injury reputation.

i mean, the backup QB is always te most popular guy when the team isnt doing good

I also remember people screaming the same thing about Patrick Ramsey. What's he? A career backup.

I don't see it with this Shaub guy...why is he such a great prospect?
 
You know what occurs to me?

Shaub's not enough to move up from 13 to 1 or 2.

A trade like that, dropping 11-13 spots, from the top 2, would take another 1 and something else. A 2nd rounder, a player, etc. So if you take the teams individual first rounders out of the equation, does that mean Shaub is worth a 1st rounder+? No way.

The most, absolute most, I could see them getting is a late 1 for him. And I could see that. It only takes one coach to fall in love with a guy.
 
I think Atlanta moves up to 11th. 10th if Miami wins tomorrow. They still got a shot at winding up 8th if they lose next week. If they win and the other 7 win teams all lose they could end up 18th.

That's what has me intrigued as well.

As some might recall, I'm no WR jihadist. But this guy...if he is who he's hyped up to be...he could really do this offense wonders.

Still, AP is gonna be damn hard to pass up.

Me either, I've been talking RB or QB to this point, but this Jones guy sounds like a Larry Fitzgerald with more athletic talent. I also love the words, "goes up and get's the ball". Something that Randy Moss used to do and no one else on the roster can do IMO. This guy & Ronald Curry as our #1 & #2 options could be interesting. Morant & Gabriel could batle for the #3 job.

Perhaps we could find a way to land Michael Bush or whatever in the 2nd round (or late first by trading other draft picks).

FA dollars on the offensive line, perhaps trading Moss/Porter would also help us land additional lineman....

Either way, I love our options here.
 
I look at this way... the way these guys are talked up, who would you rather have?

An in their prime Randy Moss, or Eric Dickerson?

I know who I want :cool:

I wouldn't be overly upset if we grabbed Michael Bush with our second rounder. Grab Brian Leonard with our 3rd and that's a pretty impressive backfield.
 
Especially if we can get Kenny Irons in Rd3. :D
