Will Culpepper start Saturday against Arizona?

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
NAPA, Calif. - Lane Kiffin isn't saying yet who the Oakland Raiders starting quarterback will be for Saturday's preseason-opener against Arizona.

The only thing for certain is that it won't be JaMarcus Russell, the unsigned No. 1 draft pick who remains at his mother's house in Mobile, Ala.

Daunte Culpepper, Josh McCown and Andrew Walter are all listed together on the depth chart put out by the team Tuesday.

"The thought was that we're obviously in a competition at that spot (and) no one of the three has emerged as a clear-cut guy by any means," Kiffin said. "We don't need to have the starter (named) right now so we're going to let them play, and to the best that we can, they'll have equal reps in the game."

As they have throughout training camp, McCown and Walter split reps with the Raiders' first-team offense Tuesday and figure to get the majority of work against the Cardinals. Culpepper - a Vanguard High graduate who became the favorite to win the starting job after signing with a one-year deal with Oakland on July 31 - practiced with the second-team offense and will have a limited package of plays against Arizona while he tries to get up to speed with Kiffin's offense.

"We're not playing a real game yet so we'll just keep pushing him as hard as we can push him along and see how far he comes," Kiffin said.

In his brief time with the Raiders, Culpepper has proven his arm is fine. During passing drills, his throws are sharper and more crisp than either McCown's or Walter's. But there are still questions about Culpepper's mobility after he missed most of last season due to lingering problems in his right knee.

There are reservations about McCown and Walter, as well.

McCown was part of a draft-day trade with Detroit and hasn't thrown a pass in a regular-season game since 2005. He spent all of last season as a back-up to Jon Kitna with the Lions and was hoping to parlay a starting job this year into a big payday next offseason when he becomes a free agent.

Walter was 2-6 as a starter for the Raiders last season and was the lowest rated quarterback in the NFL after throwing 13 interceptions and completing 55.8 percent of his throws. He underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in the offseason and wasn't able to practice until the team opened camp.

Meanwhile, Russell remains unsigned and is one of only two first-round picks without a contract. His representatives have yet to speak publicly on the matter, and Marc Badain - the Raiders' chief negotiator with Russell - declined to comment after attending practice Tuesday.

Kiffin, who has maintained contact with Russell throughout negotiations, didn't sound optimistic when asked if an agreement with Russell was close.

"I wouldn't use the word close, no," Kiffin said, adding that the prolonged talks are hurting the rookie quarterback's chances of playing in the preseason. "Every day hurts him. Every (missed) practice just puts him that far behind. We just talked about how hard it is for Daunte to catch up and he's been playing in this league for a while. Here's somebody who's never taken a snap in the league, so every day that he misses hurts his chances."

NFL Preseason Preview - Arizona (0-0) at Oakland (0-0)

Tony Moss

A couple of new leaders will take their respective sidelines for the first time on Saturday night, as the Oakland Raiders play host to the Arizona Cardinals in the initial preseason tune-up for both teams.

Donning the headset for the Silver and Black will be Lane Kiffin, formerly the offensive coordinator for USC, who takes over for the fired Art Shell. The 32- year-old Kiffin, son of longtime Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, is the youngest head coach in the modern era of the NFL. He takes over a moribund franchise that has gone a combined 15-49 since 2003, and he does so without No. 1 overall pick and "quarterback of the future" JaMarcus Russell, who was still embroiled in a contract holdout as of Friday afternoon.

Former Cardinals starter Josh McCown, holdover Andrew Walter, and the recently acquired Daunte Culpepper are all slated to see time at QB for the Raiders on Saturday.

Arizona, meanwhile, will be operating in a game situation under head coach Ken Whisenhunt for the first time.

Whisenhunt was handed the Cardinals job after a successful three-year stint as offensive coordinator of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Like Kiffin, he has a major challenge in changing the culture of losing within his organization. The Cardinals have just one playoff win since 1947 and have posted only one winning season since 1984.

Whisenhunt will build around an offensive corps that includes quarterback Matt Leinart, running back Edgerrin James, and wideouts Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin, none of whom are expected to see significant minutes on Saturday.

First-round draft choice Levi Brown (Penn State), whom the Cardinals selected with the No. 5 overall pick in April, will get his first work in an Arizona uniform.

On the injury front, Oakland running back LaMont Jordan (back) and defensive lineman Tyler Brayton (elbow) are among the significant figures that will miss the preseason lid-lifter.

Saturday will mark the 10th all-time preseason meeting between the Raiders and Cardinals, with Oakland entering the game holding a 6-3 edge. The two last met in the preseason prior to the 2005 season, when the Cardinals were 17-16 road victors.

One of Oakland's two wins during the 2006 regular season came against Arizona, a 22-9 home triumph in Week 7.

Raiders Prepare To Begin Kiffin Era

August 10, 2007

OAKLAND -- Lane Kiffin will have to settle for seeing the quarterback who could have been the future of the Raiders instead of the one who is in his first exhibition game as Oakland's coach.

With No. 1 overall draft pick JaMarcus Russell unsigned, the Raiders enter Saturday night's preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals with Josh McCown starting at quarterback and Andrew Walter and Daunte Culpepper as the backups.

Matt Leinart will start for Arizona at quarterback. He's a player very familiar to Kiffin and one who could have been a Raider if the team hadn't passed him up in the 2006 draft.

Kiffin and Leinart won two national championships together at USC, with Leinart winning the Heisman Trophy award in 2004.

"It's going to be fun," Leinart said. "I'm excited to see him before the game. They've got Mike Williams now, who was my receiver in college. And I know quite a few of the guys on the team, so it's going to be fun to go there."

In the 2006 draft, the Raiders chose safety Michael Huff with the seventh pick as Leinart fell to the Cardinals at No. 10. While the Raiders are pleased with Huff, their struggles at quarterback last season contributed to a 2-14 record that led to coach Art Shell's firing.

One of those wins came at home against the Cardinals in Leinart's third career start in the NFL.

"Last year, we had some bad experiences there playing, but I'm looking forward to seeing Lane and seeing him as a head coach," Leinart said.

Shell was fired following the season and Kiffin was brought in to rebuild the Raiders. The team started by using the top pick this year on Russell and signing McCown and Culpepper to challenge Andrew Walter.

But with contract negotiations with Russell stalled, the Raiders will start McCown in the preseason opener against one of his former teams.

"I wanted to start this game, because I wanted to play against the players on it just because of the guys that I played with when I was there," said McCown, who spent four years in Arizona. "I just like competing against those guys. I thought it'd be fun."

The Cardinals also have a new coach this season in former Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt. The Raiders interviewed Whisenhunt before the 2006 season but he pulled out of talks before any offer was made and Oakland hired Art Shell.

Whisenhunt gets his chance this year with the Cardinals, who have plenty of talent at the skill positions with Leinart, receivers Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald and running back Edgerrin James.

"As a young team, we want to win, obviously. I think that's important," Whisenhunt said. "But you've also got to understand that we're trying to look at players. We're in a position now where we've got to find out about chemistry with some of our guys on the first unit, and then there's a number of positions where we have guys competing for backup roles."

A big focus for both new coaches this offseason was rebuilding the offensive line. The Cardinals were last in the league, averaging 3.2 yards per carry in 2006.

Arizona signed center Al Johnson and left tackle Mike Gandy as free agents in the offseason and used its first-round pick on Levi Brown of Penn State in an effort to shore up the blocking this season.

The Raiders allowed a league-worst 72 sacks last season, but the biggest changes in Oakland are about technique with the cut-blocking scheme brought in by new line coach Tom Cable.

Cable is the fourth line coach in the past four years in Oakland but the first to use cut-blocking. His schemes worked well last season in Atlanta when the Falcons rushed for 2,939 yards. Although 1,039 of those were by quarterback Michael Vick, it was still the most by an NFL team since 1978 when New England set the league record with 3,165.

This game will be the first real sign of how well the change is working, since the Raiders don't cut their own defense in practice to avoid any possible injuries.

"We're not going to cut our own guys here in practice and so you have to find out which guys are going to cut, which guys are going to do it right, which guys are going to be extremely physical and finish the way we need to," Kiffin said. "At times, there's a point where they have to cut off in practice because we don't want to do it with our own teammates."

Kiffin Readies For 1st Preseason Game As NFL Coach

Three keys for the Raiders

• The offense must show it can move the ball and not commit turnovers.

• The offensive line needs to look competent after last season's debacle, when it allowed a league-high 72 sacks.

• The defense must be tough against the run.

Three keys for the Cardinals

• Can Arizona's running game be effective?

• The defense must show improvement after giving up the big plays in 2006.

• A rookie no more, Matt Leinart must start showing he's a franchise quarterback.

TIME: 7 p.m.

TV/RADIO: Ch. 58, live; Ch. 36, 10 p.m. tape-delayed; 560-AM, 1170-AM

2006 RECORDS: Cardinals 5-11, last in NFC West; Raiders 2-14, last in AFC West

RAIDERS' REMAINING EXHIBITION SCHEDULE: At 49ers, Aug. 18, 7 p.m.; vs. St. Louis Rams at McAfee Coliseum, Aug. 24, 7 p.m.; at Seattle Seahawks, Aug. 30, 7 p.m.

STORY LINE: Tonight's game marks the official unveiling of the Lane Kiffin era and gives fans their first look at the man entrusted with reviving a Raiders franchise that has won only 15 of 64 regular-season games the past four seasons. What they will see is the return of the West Coast offense after a three-year hiatus, though Kiffin still intends to mix in the occasional deep pass. Quarterbacks Josh McCown and Daunte Culpepper will have their first opportunity to show they are worthy of running Kiffin's offense in the regular season. McCown, tonight's starter, played for the Cardinals from 2002-05. Then comes Andrew Walter, a quarterback who guided the Raiders to their only two victories last season but also endured a league-worst 46 sacks. Culpepper is expected to receive extensive playing time in his first action since a knee injury sidelined him four games into last season. All eyes will be on Oakland's offense. The Raiders scored a league-worst 12 offensive touchdowns last season, and their offensive line allowed a league-worst 72 sacks. That prompted Raiders managing general partner Al Davis to fire coach Art Shell and hire the offensive-minded Kiffin. Kiffin, in turn, hired respected offensive line coach Tom Cable. Defensively, the Raiders return all 11 starters, so we know what to expect in that regard. It will be interesting to see how the Raiders fare against the high-powered Cardinals offense.

-- Steve Corkran

I don't care for Jim Gray, who is usually on the sidelines. He seems to always get some facts wrong. I think that position would best be served by someone like Wisniewski, who I believe did some of that last preseason.

Try CBS Sportsline... I like the little football field with the live bars that simulate the yards gained...

It's like the old 70's pong version of football

It's an acquired taste for me.... I like when its 3rd and 8 on the 30 and I'm sitting there hoping a red bar crosses the 40...

It's almost like gambling... it's actually kinda fun...

Then I watch the recorded version from NFLN a day later to break down the film

Televised on Ch. 6 TV at 10:00 (Local Bay Area TV). I think that's CBS. Replay on Sunday at 8:00. (West Coast time).

If it is indeed CBS, those of us not in the Bay Area will be able, I think, to watch it on the TVU player tonight at 10 (1 a.m. EST).

Plus the NFL Network replay.

I am not sure but I think KICU channel 6 is a FOX affiliate. Here in the bay area whenever there is a San Francisco Giants game in prime time on FOX and shows like House are scheduled, they usually put the House show and other regular programing on channel 6. I don't know for sure...hope it works out for you. Here is one more link...

Hit it here....

EDIT: KTLA will air the game in Los Angeles area..a bigger market. You might try and see if that station is available.

Raiders vs. Cardinals Game Notes

August 11, 2007

The Oakland Raiders host the Arizona Cardinals tonight at McAfee Coliseum in Oakland in the 2007 Pre-Season opener for both teams. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.

THIRD AND LONG: The Oakland Raiders defense was among the NFL’s best team in third and long situations against in 2006. The Silver and Black ranked first in opponents third down attempts longer than yards seven yards allowed (19%, 19-of-100), and fifth in third down attempts of longer than 10 yards allowed (13.8%, 8-of-58).

NOTHING OVER 20: The Oakland Raiders defense led the NFL in 2006 for fewest plays over 20+ yards allowed. This marked the first time the Raiders have accomplished this feat.

CURRYING THE LOAD: WR Ronald Curry. recovered from his second season-ending Achilles tendon injury and led the Raiders in receiving with 62 catches for 727 yards in 2006. He earned the Ed Block Courage Award for his efforts. During a three-game stretch from Week 14-16, he racked up 28 catches for 292 yards and a touchdown. Against Cincinnati on December 10, Curry had eight catches for 99 yards including a five-yard touchdown. Curry followed it up with nine catches for 87 yards against St. Louis. The next week, Curry set a single-game high with 11 catches for 106 yards against Kansas City.

LECHLER PUNTING AVERAGE TOPS IN NFL HISTORY: Shane Lechler.’s 46.1-yard punting average through seven seasons is the highest in NFL history for players with at least 250 attempts. Lechler reached the qualifier of 250 punts during the November 23, 2003, contest at Kansas City. He surpassed Pro Football Hall of Famer Sammy Baugh, who averaged 45.1 in a career that ended in 1952. Lechler led the AFC and finished second in the NFL in gross punting average (47.5).

LECHLER 50-YARD STREAK: Shane Lechler.’s streak of having a punt travel 50 yards or longer ended at 17 straight games as he did not have a punt of that distance during the December 23 contest against Kansas City. During the streak, he had 48 punts exceeding 50 yards and seven over 60. He set a record with 33 straight games with a punt of 50 or more yards, the longest streak since the NFL/AFL merger in 1970.
