ASHBURN, Va. (AP) -- The Washington Redskins added safety Adam Archuleta and linebacker Andre Carter to their free agency haul Monday, giving the team five new players in three days.
Archuleta, who had played five years with the St. Louis Rams, signed a six-year, $30 million deal with a $10 million signing bonus.
Carter will fly to Washington on Tuesday to sign his deal, said an official familiar with the deal. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the contract wasn't signed. .
The two players join receivers Brandon Lloyd and Antwaan Randle El and tight end Christian Fauria as the newest additions to Joe Gibbs' team.
Archuleta, a hard-hitting safety, is the replacement for Ryan Clark, whom the Redskins were unable to re-sign before the start of free agency. He also provides insurance in case Sean Taylor misses playing time because of aggravated assault charges in Florida.
Carter would the natural replacement for departed linebacker LaVar Arrington. The Redskins want to generate more of a pass rush, and Carter has 32 sacks over his five-year career with San Francisco. He had 12 1/2 in 2002 but only 6 1/2 over his last two years.
The team also re-signed backup linebacker Khary Campbell.
The fast-and-furious dealings created a logjam at Redskins Park, where three separate news conferences were scheduled one hour apart Monday afternoon to introduce new players. And the team isn't done yet: Defensive end John Abraham and quarterback Todd Collins are also being wooed.
Archuleta was a first-round pick (No. 20 overall) out of Arizona State by the Rams in 2001. He has started 69 of 72 games with 547 tackles, 15 sacks, 25 deflected passes and two interceptions. Last year, he started 14 games and had 93 tackles, 3 1/2 sacks, five pass deflections and one interception.
