Anyone here from MD?

5K scholarship plus 3K grant +5500 stafford loan. School ends up being like 12K I can swing that.

He will just have Stafford loans to worry about he wants to teach and coach football so he should qualify for PSLF.

I have twins that are sophomores in high school right now. College costs keep me up at night.

Got a Sophomore and Junior. Soph plans on being a welder, so she's pretty much set. Junior doesn't know what he wants to do, so he'll take classes at the college I work at to keep costs down to almost nil ($10/class) while he tries to find his way.

Multiple people have told me that they will only consider my exes income for financial aid. I have a hard time believing it but if true they should get a shitload of financial aid.

I lucked out with the oldest, she received a 18K academic from an in state school so it was basically free. All that shit went out the window with Covid the boy received less than half that. Prior to Covid he would have been good for 12-14K.

Talk with the school's Financial Aid Counselors. There are going to be a myriad of things that they can assist you with or at least push you in the right direction. Different states have different rules and depending on the status of the school, it can make a difference in FinAid as well.

If you have a school in mind, start talking with them now, so that you can prepare. A great option is to have them go to a local Community College to the standard required classes out of the way. Some schools also allow you to test out of them upon entrance or take the CLEP to satisfy the requirement. Last thing will depend on your kids, but try to get them to take dual enrollment courses or classes that satisfy college credit.

Edit: One last thing. Go for every grant and scholarship you can. If they even slightly resemble the qualifications, get after it.

Thanks for the advice. My daughter has been set on going to Cornell since grade school. She has the grades but probably not the extracurriculars but who knows how it will shake out. I've told her to go to the local community college as you said and that it's easier to get into any college as a junior than it is to apply there as a freshman. I feel for the parents paying top dollar for college this year so that their kids can sit at home and learn remotely.

Pretty sure any federal aid will take both parents income into consideration up to age 26 of the student.

I read somewhere that if my wife and I would have listed as separated, we could qualify for free money toward tuition. We didnt do it but it is tempting.

That's the way I always understood it too. The people that told me otherwise were both teachers, divorced, and had kids in college which is what made me question my former beliefs. I can assume at this point that I'm going to get screwed and it's usually a safe bet.

It may come down to tax dependency.

Not 100% sure but I think they’ll ask for both parents.

Edit: Nope.

“If your parents are divorced, separated, or were never married and DON’T live together, you fill out the FAFSA based on your custodial parent.”

This is the one instance where NY state bullshit custody laws actually work in my favor. I have my kids 50% of the time. She gets them a week at her house and I get them a week at mine. NY law says that whoever makes less money is the custodial parent.

It is federal. The same rules are here in PA. For us married folk, it would be a shame to get in a big argument, have one of us move out, immediately sign the FAFSA and then reconcile the next morning.

Take everything you can from the federal or state government. They would do the same thing to you if the situation was reversed.

My oldest got a full tuition athletic scholarship. It's just room and board so not too bad. Fights to happen. People do move out. People do get back together. Who knows what the future holds.

I've tried to get my two to get married to a friend so that they would be emancipated and only have their own income considered for college. They do not share my enthusiasm for this plan.
