New OSU Cornerbacks Coach Named
Mar 06 2007 2:34PM

Ohio State said Tuesday the football team has hired a former Miami of Ohio assistant as new cornerbacks coach.

Taver Johnson had been assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for the RedHawks.

Johnson had taken a job as defensive line coach with the Oakland Raiders after last season but gave that up for the position with the Buckeyes.

A native of Cincinnati and a Wittenberg graduate, Johnson replaces Tim Beckman, who left Ohio State to become defensive coordinator at Oklahoma State.

Is this job really better than one in the pros? Did Ryan eat his child or something? WTF???? Is it really that important to move back to Ohio???

No idea what is family situation is or if he has long term aspirations at Ohio St.

Either way, my general rule of thumb is that I only want guys that are ambitious and WANT to be here anyway. Better to jettison him now IMO.

Yawn.

Not yawny to me. What we need is stability, cooperation and direction. Our talent level isn't the worst of 32 teams, our team is. They have to believe in the staff, and people bailing (it keeps happening) sends the message that the grass is greener everywhere else. Even Ohio.

Whoa. I just realized there are two of you.

True but Kiffin, Knapp, Cable and Rob Ryan are all nice coaches. Think about last year... Knapp or Walsh. Irv or Cable? We have proved we can land good people IMO. We even have players re-doing their contracts. I think building back this franchise is a two/three year job. We have gained alot of respect with our moves so far IMO. Not wasting money on garbage FA. Signing good coaches. Keeping our good young guys like Sands, Kelly and Curry. It wont happen overnight but i feel like we are gonna shock some teams next year.

Seeing double

Whoa. I just realized there are two of you.

heheheheheheh

Yeah, talking to yourself is one thing, but disagreeing with yourself is another. RIVL was here 1st and if I'd seen his name, I'd have chose another. But I didn't so now we can confuse everyone as often as possible.

Is it just me, or does anyone else find it strange that these coaches can just come and go from OL coach, to RB coach, to TE coach, etc? I would figure that these guys have a certain dimension that they have mastered, and they would stay coaching that area.

I agree and as RIVL said, it's better to get them out now (even if they're leaving voluntarily) if they don't want to be here. Anyone think of a good replacement?

I had no idea who taver johnson was before we hired him. Seems strange that he then ups and leaves so quickly, but I will not be losing any sleep over it. Millard seems to be doing a real good job so the only issue is if he gets looked at as an OC at some point it would be an advantage if we already had a replacement on board.

One leaves and the rest crawl out of the corners

Raiders round out coaching staff
It took them nearly two weeks to formally announce it, but the Raiders finally revealed they have a new quarterbacks coach.

Former Giants offensive quality control coach John DeFilippo, 28, gets that gig. We reported this during the NFL Scouting Combine last month.

The Raiders appear to have finally filled their remaining coaching positions. The team also announced it has hired James Cregg as an assistant offensive line coach; Randy Hanson as an assistant defensive line coach; and Sanjay Lal as an offensive quality control coach.

Hanson was a quality control coach for the Rams in 2006 and spent the previous three seasons as an offensive assistant with the Vikings.

This is the first NFL coaching stop for Cregg and Lal. Cregg coached the defensive line at the University of Idaho the past three years. Hanson coached defensive backs and special teams the past three seasons at Portland State. Lal, a former University of Washington wide receiver, spent the past two seasons as an assistant at Cal under Jeff Tedford.

BTW, attack of the college coaches continue. Say what you will, but Al Davis has shown a lot of flexibility by 'flipping the script' in a huge way with his coaching staff.

Hiring college coaches makes sense on many levels, but perhaps the most important factor is that most NFL teams resemble college programs in respect to player turnover. How many NFL teams retain the same core of players for more than 4 years? Not many.

The old knock on college coaches was that the enthusiasm or "rah rah" stuff would eventually wear thin, but that is somewhat null & void with high player turnover.
