This is what I've been able to land so far ...

01.01 Oakland - Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech
02.01 Oakland - Ryan Kalil, C, Southern Cal
03.01 Oakland - Doug Free, OT, Northern Illinois
03.36 Oakland - Troy Smith, QB, Ohio State
04.01 Oakland - Kevin Boss, TE, Western Oregon
05.01 Oakland - Brian Robison, DE, Texas

The Stanford QB and Jordan Palmer were both available at the end of the third, but I still like Smith.

I do have an uneasy feeling about going with two linemen early. Looking at our roster, I just don't think they're going to add many linemen. Can't throw away Boothe, McQuistan, Gallery, Grove or Morris so early (well, maybe Morris because he was only a 7th-rounder). Just signed Hulsey and Newberry, so they're probably going to make the team. And Sims, Slaughter, Badger and Treu area all veterans. You need to have some kind of veteran presence, right?

So assuming we keep 9 OLinemen like we did last year, who's not coming back?
Gallery
Boothe
McQuistan
Grove
Morris
Hulsey
Newberry
Sims
Slaughter
Badger
Treu

That's 11 right there. Adding two more in the draft would mean we'd have to cut three, maybe four. I'm all for dumping Treu and Sims. But who else?

Solid job overall.

Although you know my feeling on Calvin at number 1 overall... ;)

Solid B, addressing our line, WR, and QB issues and adding a couple developmental guys.

I like Joe Newton as a TE who can step in and upgrade immediately, although the Boss is more dynamic and fits the Raider mold...

Robison has 'Raider athlete' written all over him.

My guess is that Hulsey, Treu and Badger would be gone.... Hulsey and Badger don't have the mobility needed in this scheme and Morris can long snap... I'd think that Grove would be moved back to guard should Kalil get drafted...

The draft in itself is fine, but I'd prefer to flip flop and get the QB at one and the WR in RD 3... It's really too bad we didn't pull the trigger on Leinart last year... we would have had a QB familiar with Kiff's system and be able to take the luxury WR pick in CJ...

Well sure cuz you were looking at my 'Lil Al from last year./ I picked Leinart in the first round and almost passed out when we passed at 7...holy shit.

As somebody I know would say ``f/ck a bunca Michael Huffs"...

Just added a defensive tackle -- Antonio Johnson from Miss. St. -- with the fifth-rounder we got for Doug Gabriel.

Love the second and third picks> Those are the two OL I covet, particularly Khalil and it wouldn't surprise me if Al took a flyer on Troy Smith. A lot of you guys are willing to give Grove yet another pass. I'm not. If we can sign Cooper Carlisle I just assume look to deal Grove while we can get something for him.

I agree that 2 OLs on Day 1 are unlikely, but I'm all for starting off with CJ and Kalil. Smith is a good pick where you took him. He might turn out to be something. Maybe take a DL, TE, or DB at 3:1.

As for linemen...

Assuming the starting 5 are Sims (restructured, so he appears safe), Grove, Kalil, Boothe, and Gallery, and assuming that McQ is a lock to stick around, I'd have to hang onto Slaughter (may not fit the scheme, but he's played well enough to be given a shot) and Treu. Treu is the hated finesse blocker, but that might serve him well in this scheme should he be called upon.

That's what? 8? I'd be up for dropping a day 2 pick on a developmental tackle with the wheels to play in this scheme. Someone from Iowa or SC, maybe. Or, bring in Cooper Carlisle and call it a day.

I'm not buying your shit -- sandbagger! ;)

If we do take Calvin Johnson, I would not at all be opposed to Troy Smith or Drew Stanton, maybe even Kevin Kolb, as a 3rd or 4th round pick.

If we go Johnson in round one, I'd like Stanton in round 2.

Personally, I think the talent drops significantly after Stanton and the guys like Kolb, Zabransky,Smith, Edwards and Beck all have big time question marks.

Russell-Quinn

Stanton

Kolb, Edwards,Smith etc.

Heh, true although I tried to simplify a few sections in my graph.

100% agree. In fact, I'd prefer this route, actually. I just don't think that Russell or Quinn are #1 pick material and have major 'disappointment' potential all over them that high. I wouldn't mind them a few picks later, though.

*shrug*

To hell with what I think. Big Al is going to have a hell of a time passing up his "John Elway" swan song.

I wanted to address DE or DT in the first three rounds, but I jumped at Kalil and then by Round 3, all my favorites along the DL were gone. If I had it to do over, I'd take Justin Harrell (who I didn't realize was available, and who probably won't be in real life, anyway) or Lamar Woodley.
