OK, so I've been considering the possibility that my captaincy on the JaMarcus Bandwagon may be clouding my judgement. Meaning, I've been locked into this state of mind, and defending the possible pick at three different boards, so much that I am starting to wonder if I want the Raiders to pick Russell because he's the right pick, or because I just want to be right. And that's silly. This isn't the only way to get a QB, there's a million different ways to skin a cat.
So I tried to think of possible draft combinations I could live with that didn't involve JaMarcus going #1.
Which brings us to this exercise. The idea is to pick the 5 positions you'd like to see us grab a player at with our first 5 picks. Or 4 positions, if you'd like to see two at one position. Then, come up with different combinations of those positions that you could live with, or even possibly love on draft day. This is not what you think the Raiders will do, we already have a contest for that. This is simply an exercise to hopefully get people to think outside the box that we all tend to create in our mind around this time.
A few rules:
As part of this exercise, if you choose to do more than one 'mock' you must use the same 5 positions in every possible scenario. For example, if I want the Raiders to take a QB, OL, TE, WR, and LB, then in every mock I do must use those same positions. The point of the exercise is to find different ways to achieve the same result. Feel free to use the same position multiple times, but it must stay consistent for each mock. We will allow vagueness, like OL instead of OG. That should be more than enough freedom.
We are mocking the first 4 rounds. So, 5 picks (1.1, 2.1, 3.1, 3.36, 4.1). 5 picks is enough, and I'm really not interested in everyone's dream pick for the 6th round.
In the interest of realistic mocks, we will use the draft values from www.nfldraftscout.com All players must be drafted in the rounds that NFLDS has them ranked. Now, some players are ranked as a 2-3rd rounder, those players may be used in the later round, as the Raiders are picking 1st in each round. Except for their pick at the end of the 3rd. That must be a 3, 3-4, or lower.
Now, NFLDS is a pay site. It rocks, and you should be a subscriber. But if you happen to log in under a username that you know is used by one super-groovy cat, and happened to guess his password was that super-groovy cat's favorite team, you might be able to access the rankings. YWIA.
That's it. The only rules.
My entry:
In my dream scenario, Raiders come away with a QB, WR, OL, DL, and ........RB.
Option #1, my first choice, if everything fell into place, gives me mahogany, (will never, ever happen):
1 JaMarcus Russell
2 Justin Blalock
3 Quentin Moses
3 Michael Bush
4 Paul Williams
Dang, that's hot.
Now, other combos I could live with (I wonder if this exercise will interest to anyone other than me
):
1 Calvin Johnson
2 Jarvis Moss
3 John Beck
3 Lorenzo Booker
4 Ryan Harris
Not too shabby. That Todd McShay guy was on TV the other day, and got me worked up about Beck, he was going on and on about him. Loooove to see Booker in Oaktown. Lotta speed in this mock, and even an FSU guy for Jack's Libido.
1 Joe Thomas
eek: )
2 Sidney Rice
3 Drew Stanton
3 Michael Bush
4 Antonio Johnson
Now, this is what I mean by thinking outside the box. Could anyone really say they would be unhappy if these were our first 5 picks? I wouldn't. Check out Antonio Johnson's profile on NFLDS. Guy has 'Raider' written all over him. Juco, work in progress, potential, etc.
One more:
1 Brady Quinn
2 Tony Ugoh
3 Kenny Irons
3 Marcus Thomas
4 Mike Walker
You know, Peter King in his MMQB said don't count Quinn out for the Raiders, and I agree with him. Think I've even stated it before. Mike Walker is part Doug Gabriel, part Jerry Porter. Played at UCF, and played offense and defense. Any of you former KFFL'ers remember two years ago, in the draft day thread, when after the 3rd round, we were all just praying for Taj Hawthorne every time our pick came up, till he finally was picked in the 6th round? I could see that happening with Marcus Thomas this year. Same with Michael Bush after the 2nd round.
BTW, the KFFL draft day threads from two years ago (for a little perspective):
