FOR THE CHIEFS TO ENSURE A SUCCESSFUL TRAINING CAMP

Fountain of youth
It’s a good omen if the top two draft picks have earned some playing time. The faster defensive end Tamba Hali (above) works his way into the playing rotation and strong safety Bernard Pollard wins a starting job, the better off the Chiefs will be.

For the defense
This beaten-down bunch needs to have some success, sooner rather than later. Defenders need to buy into the new system and be ready to go for the Sept. 10 season opener.

Working on the line
With the retirement of John Welbourn, the offensive line will have a new right tackle. It’s good news if Kyle Turley (75 below), two years away from football because of back troubles, wins the job. He’s the most talented of the candidates.

The Chiefs are woefully thin at a lot of positions, particularly on offense. Imagine an offense with Damon Huard at quarterback, Dee Brown at halfback and Jordan Black at left tackle. Get the picture? The Chiefs need to get to the season with all of their pieces intact.

Where’s Ty Law?
Until he either joins the Chiefs or signs elsewhere, the veteran cornerback’s looming presence will be a distraction. If he’s going to sign anyway, the sooner the Chiefs get him on the practice field, the better.
