Mayes beats Mantle in 3 of the 5 tools.

Even hitting would be damn close... better career numbers for Mayes and exact same SLG.

Which tools? Mickey was faster, could switch hit, and had tape measure power.

Mantle has more home runs if he had the same number of at-bats. That is why I said when healthy. Mickey hit for the Triple Crown and beat Mays in two World Series. But Mays had the most important tool: health.

the 5 tools are:
average
power
speed
arm strength
and fielding

I'm not sure if that's what each side is operating on.

Mays was a far superior fielder, better effective use of speed and arm, statistically as good a power hitter, and hit for better average. He is generally recognized as the more complete player. He also spent most of his career playing in a home ballpark notoriously difficult to hit in and lost almost 2 fulls seasons to military commitment.

Mantle was good but he was no Willie Mays.

JMO

I'd be lying if I said I've ever watched either one except for film clips here or there but Mays is generally recognized as the best 5 tool player ever and is a frequent consideration for best player all time overall. I'm not even a Giants fan and not really related to this conversation but he's an icon here in the NorCal, Greater Bay Area. Him, Al Attles, eventually Steph Curry I think. Maybe slip Rickey Henderson or Reggie Jackson in but I think they're more on the Montana, Rice level tbh.

I'm a huge Giants fan and have seen Willie play in person countless times. I saw him when the Giants moved to San Francisco in 1958 and watch him live at Seals Stadium before Candlestick was built in 1960. The only time I saw Mantle play in person was in the 1962 World Series. He had a bad series but the Yankees won anyway when Richardson speared McCovey's line drive at second base to end the series in game 7. Game of inches!

I'll be honest, that guy was my idle when I was a kid and I was a huge supporter and fan of his.

Mays had a shitty 1962 Series too. Disappointing for fans to see both Mantle and Mays matchup again and then both slump. Ah, baseball.

My grandfather idolized Mantle and I inherited the tradition.

Did you ever see the two Peanuts strips about the Richardson catch? Schultz was a Giants fan and he has Charlie Brown bemoan fate twice about McCovey's line drive. Richardson's catch redeemed Ralph Terry (the goat of 1960), who pitched a complete game. Richardson said he had a premonition to switch from the scouting report. He is still alive. Aren't too many left.

Richardson: Right place. Right time. :(

I only got to go to one game in the '62 series but it wasn't game 7. I watched on TV but it was a real downer to end the game that way if you were a Giants fan.

Schultz lived the town I live in now. We have the Charles Schultz Museum, Charles Schultz ice rink, Charles Schultz airport, life size Peanuts character statues all over town, we even had reggae Charlie Brown with dreads get cancelled.

Dang. I am jealous. Visiting is on my bucket list.

Huge Peanuts fan. Best comic strip ever. (Well, tied with Gottfredson's Mickey Mouse run, but Mickey was adventure focused)

Flying Ace Snoopy is my favorite character.

I never really got it with Snoopy but people around here love it. The statues are kinda cool though.

The Far Side was my favorite.

Snoopy is polarizing among Peanuts fans. He took over the strip in the 70s and 80s. I enjoy all eras. There is humor and wisdom in every decade.
