So, as I understand it, we will pick #2 if we go into the offseason with an identicle record as the Lions because of the strength of schedule. That won't change, but if you look at the next four games for each team, it makes me wonder which team has the best chance of winning their games?

Raiders
@ Cincinnati .583
vs RAMS .417
vs CHIEFS .583
@ New York .583

Lions
vs Minnesota .417
@ Green Bay .333
vs Chicago .833
@ Dallas Cowboys .667

The Raiders play four teams that are neither the elite nor the dregs - teams each fighting for a playoff spot (even St. Lois in the NFC West). The first two teams the Lions play are failing and are out of the playoff hunt. How hard will Green Bay and Minnesota play? Chicago will not need a win when they play at home and the Cowboys might not need a win - already up two games with four to go.
Not that I want to lose - it sucks. I watched the Houston game from a luxury box and barely had a good time. But I'm looking for a silver (and black) lining.

Also, if the teams we play lose their OTHER games, then that eh... 'improves' our draft position if Detroit's opponents win their other games.

I wish it could, but mathmatically, it is highly unlikely for it to change that much in the last four games. Right now the Strength of schedule of the Raiders is .549 and the Lions is .500. The last 25% of the games would need to show a significant amount of upsets to change it that much. Especially for the reason's listed above - the teams the Lions play have a better chance of losing their games than the Raiders opponants.

I would rather draft 2nd anyway.

Let them draft Brady Quinn. I want Calvin Johnson, Dwayne Jarrett or Adrian Peterson, anyway.

I think we're in an ideal situation to trade down this season. I think it's entirely possible we can drop down and snag Marshawn Lynch mid first and still possibly have an outside shot at maybe Dwayne Jarrett if I figured out this point thing correctly. We'll probably also have to swap second rounders with someone but that could probably get us Zach Miller in the process.

Marshawn Lynch, Dwayne Jarrett/Alan Branch and Zach Miller with our first three picks. Plus we may get a compensatory for Chaz and at least a 5th for Gabriel but methinks that may be higher.

Who wants Quinn?

I'm with you. But there are teams (like Detroit) who do want Quinn. Hopefully they would trade up and we could still get our guy plus some more help in the form of other picks.

That would be pretty sweet. We're #1 and Detroit is #2. Swap with them and get their 2nd rounder so they can begin negotiations with Brady Quinn.

A couple years ago Detroit did that exact same thing to Cleveland. They had the #6 pick and Cleveland #7. They figured out Cleveland desperately wanted KW2 and threatened to take him so Cleveland forked over their 2nd round pick to move up 1 spot.

Honestly, what good is the number one pick to us?

We won't draft Quinn and I have my doubts that AD goes for a RB that high either. I'd look for us to take the highest rated OL/DL regardless of whether we pick 1st, 2nd, or 5th.

At least I can still root for us to win in good conscious.

I don't know, dude.

Having the first pick would scare me all offseason. Big Al doesn't trade down. So we'd probably just draft A.P. 1st, or be tempted to take f'n Quinn.

Love to get Troy Smith in the second round.

Brady Quinn in '07.

Enough of the crap QB's we push out there. (Collins, Tui, Brooks, Rob Johnson?, Possibly Walter)

Bring in the top ranked guy in college and let him try to right the ship, whether its this year or next.

I'd also settle for Peterson or Johnson :)

I'm still on the Peterson bandwagon. Draft is only 5 1/2 months away.....

007 - I'm not entirely sold on the idea of drafting Quinn, but I certainly understand your logic. I've seen little in Walter that inspires much hope for the future, though it's also very hard to judge behing this ghastly offensive line?

I still like trading down a few spots, drafting Marshawn Lynch and then drafting Jarrett by packaging the newly acquired picks. How bout' them apples?

I'd love dem' apples.

We should have traded down instead of drafting Gallery but apparently it's not in Al's nature.

I think we can bank on the fact that this year's draft choice will weigh over 300 lbs.

I'd love to get two playmakers like Lynch/Jarrett, but I dont see Al trading back.

Let's hope we can get at least 2 playmakers on offence this offseason.

Honestly... If it could happen a Lynch/Long or Lynch/Branch would make me just about creme myself... that said AP is my guy till it looks like wed have the ammo to get 2 of the top players in this draft.

Mr. Davis' number one goal this off-season will be the same as it's been for the last 4 years - bring in guys that can score. He says it every year "we need to score more points". And, he's usually a guy that likes to make a splash in the draft with big names. Trading down ain't going to happen (unfortunately). My gut tells me he'll go for Calvin Johnson in the first round, realizing that Porter and probably Moss will be history. It makes some sense but I'd still take my chances on Peterson and ride that horse for the next 10 years.

My ideal draft scenario would look something like this:

1st Round - (RB) Adrian Peterson
2nd Round - (WR) Jeff Samardzija
3rd Round - (C) Kyle Young
3rd Round - (T)Levi Brown
4th Round - (TE) Johnny Harline
5th Round - (G) Jake Kuresa
5th Round - (FB) Cory Anderson
6th Round - BPA
7th Round - BPA

I still don't see us drafting 1st so I don't think Quinn will be an issue. I still think Calvin Johnson is probably top of the list for now. I don't see us drafting a RB that high, as we seem to have gone for a more commitee approach, but I could be wrong.

I will flip flop twenty times on the position and player between now and the draft.....but when does the Lil' Al contest Thread start?

So if Brohm and Russell declare which of these guys are still on the board when our pick in the 2nd round is on the clock? Half the teams in the league are just flat-out set at QB. I can see the scenario where Russell and Brohm go top 10. But then I can also see the scenario where the draft starts and 1 or 2 teams that were thought to be leaning toward QB go somewhere else and that sends these guys free falling like Aaron Rogers.

Code:
# Brady Quinn 6-4, 225 4.80
# *JaMarcus Russell 6-6, 255 4.90
# *Brian Brohm 6-4, 225 4.90
# Drew Stanton 6-3, 235 4.80
# Troy Smith 6-0, 220 4.65

Being an LSU guy, I'm scared to death of JaMarcus Russell. Has all the physical measurables, but I question his leadership and his ability in the crunch. He relies too much on his freakish athleticism. Be prepared to hear the phrase "poor man's Vince Young" or "grade's out like Daunte Culpepper" from the draft pundits. IMO, he's no Vince Young and Culpepper was a more accomplished passer coming out of college. He's the kind of cat that will have people frothing at the mouth for the light to go on, but it just never will.

I'd be much more agreeable to taking Calvin Johnson/Adrian Peterson in the 1st and then quenching Al's thirst for a Heisman winner by taking Troy Smith in the 2nd. Say what you will about Smith's funky delivery and lake of height, but he just makes plays and is a bona fide leader out there... something we drastically need at the QB position. Let Walter and Smith battle it out in training camp with a vet like Griese.
