Good value on this pick. it's not a need pick but it's a smart pick. mcgloin may not stay and we have nothing behind him. cook was a borderline first round guy. could pay off if derek is injured or as trade bait later on.

Agree. Only concern is his attitude. I have to assume Red vetted him.

    4. CONNOR COOK, Michigan State (6-4, 216, 4.79, 1-2): Three-year starter and winningest QB (34-5) in Spartans' history. "He has a great release and he improved his feet last year," one scout said. "He won a whole hell of a lot of games. What All-Americans did they have on offense this year with the exception of the left tackle (Jack Conklin), who missed about four (actually two) games? Could he fail? Yes, because I don't really know what his mental makeup is. He has talent." Broke many records set by Kirk Cousins, a three-year captain at MSU from 2009-'11 who is regarded as an all-time leader. "Let's put it this way: he's not Kirk Cousins," another scout said. "The person kills him. Selfish. He goes out too much. It's a tell-tale sign when your teammates don't like you, and I know they don't. He's good, but that position is more than physical attributes. It's also leadership. Is he going to lead your guys? I don't think so. He'll be a starter but I don't think he can lead you to the promised land." Fifth-year senior from Hinckley, Ohio. Passer rating was 95.2, Wonderlic was 25. "He stinks," a third scout said. "Wildly inaccurate (57.5% career). Average arm, average mobility, average field vision. Not a leader. Not aware. Someone will take him in the second, third or fourth round and he's going to disappoint. The owner needs to fire the GM right after they pick him if someone takes him in the first. But when the Buffalo Bills took EJ Manuel in the first, all bets are off"

The heads on Sirius NFL were talking him up big-time. Not in the sense of pushing him up the board but talking about all his intangibles. Yeah, welcome to the team, learn a lot and hold the clip board on game day 2016 as inactive.

One thing for sure...no one on BR had more than a whiff (much less a glimpse) of Red's board beyond the obvious need at safety. One SS, two DEs and a QB...?

Hope the veterans make an exception for this kid . . . and haze the shit out of him until he breaks and begins to get it.

Man...I'm sure teams are lining up to throw draft picks at us for this guy. Wouldn't be shocked at all if he doesn't make it out of Training Camp. Seems like a douche.

Yep. But as someone mentioned, I believe that Del Rio's son knows Cook. He might have given him a recommendation

    - Huge arm
    - Prototype size
    - Ran a pro offense for 3 years
    - Was not highly recruited and fought for the job
    - Winner / record holder at MSU
    - Slipped in draft (new chip on shoulder)
    - Cheap contract

Again, we could do worse in round 4. His attitude won't be an issue here. He has no leverage to be a dick haha. He is now a back-up QB with no path to a starting job besides being an good team player and waiting. He is going to have to get to work. I like it.

Cook is a player who entered his senior season with the Spartans as a candidate for the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, but a somewhat underwhelming season sent him on a trip down draft boards. Though he led Michigan State to a College Football Playoff berth, Cook regressed from his junior to senior campaigns in completion percentage (58.1 to 56.1 percent), yards per attempt (8.81 to 7.67), touchdown percentage (6.6 to 5.8 percent of throws), passer rating (149.4 to 136.6), and QBR (76.0 to 71.2).

He also suffered a shoulder injury that kept him out of MSU's 17-14 win over Ohio State. Cook returned from the injury to face Penn State in the regular-season finale and Iowa in the Big Ten title game, leading the team to wins in both contests. However, in those two games and the College Football Playoff semifinal against Alabama, Cook went just 54 of 97 (55.6 percent) for 649 yards (6.69 per attempt), three touchdowns and three interceptions. The Spartans hung 55 points on PSU, but were held to only 16 against Iowa and got shut out by Bama.

Cook did show throughout his college career that he has NFL size (6-foot-4, 217 pounds) and a very strong arm when he steps into his throws rather than flinging the ball off his back foot, which he does on occasion when looking to go deep down the field. When able to stand tall in the pocket, he flashed excellent command of the Spartan offense, which often called on him to throw quickly over the middle or through tight windows to the sideline. However, when Cook got pushed off his spots at the top of his drop, he could get a little antsy and drop his mechanics.

Here's what Rob Rang and Dane Brugler wrote about Cook in their scouting report on CBSSports.com:

Cook isn't without flaw, but he shows a number of reasons to be encouraged about his potential in the NFL. Cook has the physical traits ideally suited for the pro game with tape that shows off a number of NFL throws.
There was a bunch of anonymous talk through the draft process about Cook's “different” personality and how something seemed “off” about him, but that seems very much like the typical sort of anonymous nonsense that gets tossed around about imperfect prospects in the weeks leading up to the draft. His physical skills and production tell us much more about the type of player we should expect Cook to be in the NFL.

Carr and McGloin are two good guys to lead him along. I'm not the biggest fan of the pick but we've seen multiple teams have their seasons abruptly end because they didn't have a capable backups. Colts twice in the past five years, Cowboys, Cardinals, etc. I see Reggie's line of thinking considering we had a scare with Carr week one last year. Dude might've gotten fired if Carr was out an extended period and we lost two more games.

Side note, Paxton Lynch is a fucking weird guy from top to bottom. Cringeworthy. Bronco fans apparently love his quirkiness but I can't see him being a leader of men. I'm gonna love making fun of that goofy fuck.

Hopefully the asshole quotient with this kid can change with maturity and a locker room of no non-sense, team-captain/high-character types in the Raiders locker room coming to work. He has to know that he has 4 years to learn, grow, play well, then he'll be a multi-millionaire and set for life. Pout about sitting the bench and being a dick in the locker room, Red will draft another QB, he won't get traded, but cut and out of the NFL.

Reggie traded up for this guy, has he ever traded up?

Value must have been too much to ignore.

This pick is gonna come up roses one way or another....trust me when I tell you.
