It was bad enough losing to New England, but the way the Patriots reacted to their AFC divisional playoff win is what made LaDainian Tomlinson lose his cool.

Nate Kaeding's missed FG set off the Patriots celebration that set off the Chargers' mouths. The San Diego Chargers running back, upset that some Patriots were dancing on the Chargers logo at midfield after they had silenced the record crowd of 68,810 at Qualcomm Stadium, went after an unidentified Patriots player, yelling and pointing, and had to be restrained by a teammate and former Charger Reche Caldwell, who had a huge game for the Patriots.

"I would never react in that way. I was very upset," Tomlinson said. "When you go to the middle of our field and start doing the dance Shawne Merriman is known for, that is disrespectful. They showed no class and maybe that comes from the head coach."

Merriman, nicknamed "Lights Out," did a spasmodic dance to celebrate each of his NFL-high 17 sacks. Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers said he saw some Patriots pointing to the scoreboard, mimicking the dance, and stomping on the Chargers logo at midfield.

"I think what got LT, and I was right there, was just a little of the taunting," Rivers said, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. "Hey, celebrate -- we'd have been sprinting on the field, too, I guarantee you. But it was a little finger pointing and I don't know where it came from."

"It was upsetting to see because they won three Super Bowls," Merriman said, according to the Boston Herald. "It's like a guy on a fast break in basketball and dunking the ball and getting excited. You've won three Super Bowls. You don't do that."

"When you go to the middle of our field and start doing the dance Shawne Merriman is known for, that is disrespectful. They showed no class and maybe that comes from the head coach."
-- LaDainian TomlinsonThe Patriots rallied from eight points down in the fourth quarter. Tom Brady threw a touchdown pass to Caldwell with under five minutes remaining, then executed a fake on a direct snap to running back Kevin Faulk that helped spring the tying two-point conversion. Steven Gostkowski added a field goal with 1:10 to play to give the Patriots a 24-21 lead, and Chargers kicker Nate Kaeding missed his 54-yard attempt to tie in the final seconds.
The bottom line: No matter how they responded to the win, the Patriots are headed to next week's AFC Championship Game in Indianapolis against the Colts.

"They won and they deserve a lot of credit," Rivers said, according to the Union-Tribune. "Personally I was disappointed in the way they handled winning. ... But that's neither here nor there. They're playing next week and we're not."

"We lost to a better team today," Tomlinson said. "Hopefully the next opportunity we have we'll learn something from this."

Tomlinson ran for 123 yards and two scores, and caught two passes for 64 yards in the loss.

The Patriots and Chargers are scheduled to meet again in Foxboro next season, and some Chargers already have the date circled.

"Every time I will play New England it will be a personal grudge," linebacker Shaun Phillips said, according to the Union-Tribune. "That was very classless. ... When we went in and beat their head in New England [last season] ... we did nothing but compliment them and say they were a good team. We would never disrespect a team like that."

At least one Patriots player did not think the lack of class was so one-sided.

"[The San Diego players] talked from the beginning to the end," linebacker Rosevelt Colvin said, according to the Union-Tribune. "We'll take the win."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

    L.T. TAKES SWIPE AT BELICHICK

The guy whom many have suggested should be the face of the NFL showed a little of his ass on Sunday.

Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson appeared to be pissed off about something as he left the field following the Patriots' stunning come-from-behind win in San Diego. He was asked about the situation in the locker room.

"[Y]es, I was upset," Tomlinson said. "Very upset. When you go to the middle of our field and you start doing the dance that Shawne Merriman is known for, that's disrespectful to me and I can't sit there and watch that. And so yeah, I was very upset. And just the fact the way they showed no class at all, absolutely no class, and maybe it comes from the head coach. There you have it."

No class? Hey, L.T., maybe it's just us, but we haven't seen many news items this year about Patriots players taking nandro or buying up the key ingreidient for "purple drank" and shipping it to Houston or getting into shoot-outs with cops or being investigated for importing knock-off athletic shoes that would then be sold to U.S. suckers at full price or driving drunk or doing any of the other things that various members of your team did this year.

And we're not defending Bill Belichick here. We don't like the whole cut-off hoodie look, and not many others do. Though we think that too much was made of him grabbing that photographer last week after beating the Jets, it definitely was something he shouldn't have done.

But there's never been a question about the Patriots being anything other than classy.

So does mimicking Shawne Merriman's "lights out" dance cross the line after the Pats turned the "lights out" on the Chargers' season? What the hell is the difference between the two? Is L.T. saying it's okay for Merriman to show up an opponent with that Tourette's patient on speed routine after making a play because he thought it up first?

It's a stupid argument, and it was a stupid thing for Tomlinson to say.

He wasn't upset because the Patriots were celebrating, he was upset because the Chargers lost, and because his storybook season ended a couple of chapters short.

And there may be an epilogue in this one, in Hawaii. If the Pats should lose to the Colts next week, the head coach of L.T.'s team will be Bill Belichick.

LT should quit his crying. He is rapidly losing respect IMO. The Bolts are the most cocky team in the NFL. They showboat dance and talk smack all day, whats LT's stance on that?

I am doing great, CB. I apologize for not going in here and at WildPitchForums. As you know, I write sports on ArmchairGM.com and for a town newspaper so my time has been clearly limited to posting. Wrting sports is really tough. Everyone thinks it's easy, but it is very time consuming so my six hours is spent on there and I do house work and such. I really am sorry. I just had to post to show my hatred for the Patriots. I hate them and Boston sports fans in general.

I am going to write a column tonight about the Patriots and how classless they are.

You know, when you have a "signature dance" that you break into after you make one play (a sack) you deserve to be mocked when you lose a whole game, especially a playoff game.

If Merriman didn't have a "signature dance" the Patriots would have had to leave the field celebrating like normal winners wouldn't they? They'd have had to go out of their way to demonstrate what poor winners they are. Instead, Merriman asks to be mocked. He juices up, gets caught, and dances like a fool after good plays. He reminds me of Junior Seau who celebrated after tackles for a loss, when those became rare, he celebrated after tackles at the LOS, and eventually after 5 yard gains. I bet he, the former Charger and current Patriot, had more than a little to do with the lack of class the Patriots displayed. He never had any, and his "leadership" is rubbing off.

PLUS, wasn't it Merriman who sent a bag of popcorn to Jason Taylor with a note to "enjoy the playoff"s? Yeah classy guy that Merriman.

I think you're right Rup. If if weren't for the classless things the Chargers do the Pats (as much as I hate them) might not have gone to that extreme. If you're gonna pull that BS you better be able to back it up on the field. The Chargers didn't.
