The not too early 2019 Draft thread.

Let's see what happens after the combine.
It's not about the player, its Walter Football for rankings. They are notorious for setting it and forgetting it. Not really updating anything as the year goes on.

OK.
They do update their mocks and rankings.

But their ranking updates are not as frequent.

You know the old joke "We've got 200 Top-100 players in this class?"
Yeah, I wrote about a few names that I just can't get my head around, in regards to their pre-Combine buzz

1.4 Quinnen Williams DT Alabama
Although Williams is arguably the best player in the draft, it might not be as simple finding him a home inside the top 3 picks. Arizona could just as easily take him over Bosa and I actually think that Arizona represents his best chance to go top 3. If they go Bosa #1 Q might slip to us, especially with SF and NY needing edge rushers and all it takes is one team to feel desperate enough to move up for a QB.

1.24 TJ Hockenson TE Iowa
I really don't expect TJ to be available at this spot, imo he's the best TE prospect to come out in the past 5+ years. His combination of blocking, route running, hands, and size make him the perfect tool for the TE position.

1.27 D.K Metcalf WR Ole Miss

I came real close to taking Hollywood here knowing full well I could still get a big man WR later in the draft, and that Hollywood has a different skillset than most others in the draft. The reason I went with DK, is he just looks faster than all those other big WR's and if he can run his reported high 4.3's his speed size combo is then unique. So if you have a chance to capture a unicorn, you take him.

2.3 Charles Omenihu DL Texas

I was hopeful I could get one of the bendy quick twitch edge guys at 24 or 27, but Polite and Burns were long gone. So here I am looking for a edge rusher or LB or anything really. Noticed Omenihu still on the board and you know what? He's a damn good player too, he's got a little bit of that MEJ vibe to him, in that is he a DE or a DT going, but I think he offers more to a team on the outside than on the inside and has developed nicely over his time in college.

Omenihu may never be a 15 sack guy, but he could be a consistent 8- 10 sack guy that knows how to play the run, and keep contain so that Quinnen and Hurst can put pressure on the QB.

3.2 Preston Williams WR Colorado St

Preston may be one of the best WR prospects in the draft. He's another guy that should show that H/W/S at his proday. He does need refinement in his routes and hands, but he really is a fun prospect to watch. I may have jumped too early on him in round 3, but fuck it, I'm trying to fix this shit, and speed and size help. I'm not sure he's quite a 4.3 guy, but 6'4" and a mid 4.4 is still solid.

4.4 Isaac Nauta TE Georgia

I guess I'm just saying FU to Cook, I'm drafting another TE that can both block and run routes and has enough speed to make life difficult for opposing defenses. This is a damn good TE class and I want to take full advantage of it.

5.3 Darwin Thompson RB Utah St

Kids been getting some love as of late in the draft world so I thought I'd check him out. Yes he's a midget 5'9 205 guy, but he seems to play a bit more aggressive and even at his smaller size falls forward and doesn't go down easily. He has soft hands and quick feet. Here is his highlights

6.23 Max Crosby DE Eastern Michigan

Late round flyer on a guy who probably will go earlier than the 6th round. I dont think anyone is sold on him though. He has the size, hustle and production people like, but he's lacking in his hips and bend. He strikes me as a guy who looked good in his own lane, but in the 6th round it's well worth a shot to see if he can translate his skills to the NFL.

7.4 Gary Johnson LB Texas
feel silly wasting a spoiler on a guy like Johnson, when watching Texas he shows up from time to time. He has a nice blitz, but he's not really a three down back that you want to write too much about. He is what he is... a basic LB that in the right system could be a solid player, or he could be out of the league in 2 years

7.21 Eric Dungy QB Syracuse

I didnt even know he was in the draft. Had a few nice games and what not... hell he's just a pick I've got nothing on him.

^ - I could actually see the Lions take Hock at 8... If not I can't see how the Titans can pass on him at 17.. another darkhorse? The Broncos at 10.. would not shock me at all

No way does Hockenson last until 24. Not happening

Yeah- just not gonna happen... TE is such a valuable position in todays NFL and he checks off all the boxes... he's about as safe as a pick as their is in the 1st rd... may not blow off the doors his 1st year but he'll be a top 3 TE in the NFL in a couple years... I dont think he'll get the production of a Kittle but he'll be responsible for a lot of big running plays and crucial 3rd down catches... I can see him in that 700+ and 6-7 taters a year kinda player but he'll be responsible for a lot of plays that develop and he'll go unoticed by the average fan because of it-

This sounds crazy but if we big 3 are taken, why not take Hockenson at #4?

@gst8 threw a similar idea out but I think people are acting silly. We all like Hockenson a lot. He’s probably leveling out into a pick in the 10-20 range. Safe. Solid everywhere.

He’s a great prospect. He’s not a top 5-10 talent though. He would be behind OJ Howard as a prospect if they came out together. People are acting like he’s a generational talent we cannot afford to pass on.

He’s the best TE in a really good TE class. There are 5-6 I would like later on if we went that way. He and Jacobs have just got the draft nik hype train rolling.

It's a real deep TE draft overall and I think it compares favorably to the OJ Howard, Njoku, Engram class. With that being said, teams rarely put a huge emphasis on TE in the draft early and with such depth, maybe just maybe Hock slips while teams look to address other needs. I won't hold my breath or anything, but one never knows when it comes to the draft.

As far as picking him at 4? As much as I like the prospect, I just don't think that it would be in the cards for us. We need to address the passrush 1st and foremost, sitting back and waiting to see what happens for 20 more picks seems a bit too risky.

@gst8 thinks we should trade down if Hockenson is the target.
