The "Final 53 + Taxi Squad" Speculation Thread

This is really disappointing.

"After missing practice last week, there was some concern about the status of Raiders second round rookie safety Obi Melifonwu for the season opener. We have the answer and it isn’t good news.

Not only will he not be available for the opener, he has been placed on Injured Reserve with a knee injury along with offensive lineman Denver Kirkland with a significant injury he suffered in the preseason.

Melifonwu had returned for the team’s third preseason game after missing most of training camp. He either suffered a new injury or reaggravated the injury that kept him out of camp.

Both players will now be out at least the first 8 games of the season. The Raiders need not designate either player to return. If it were season ending IR, they would have been placed on IR with the initial 53-man roster cuts. Having them on the roster at the cutdown allows them to return this season.

The earliest they may return to practice is 6 weeks.

In corresponding moves, the Raiders signed Xavier Woodson-Luster who spent training camp and preseason with the team along with safety Erik Harris who appeared in four games for the Saints last season.

why didn't the take Ward/Calhoun/ ...

I was thinking about Calhoun not even getting a waiver claim from another team and wondering if this will be his wake-up call. It seems he has all the physical tools, but has trouble getting motivated. Maybe the realization that if he doesn't step his game up immediately he's going to be clerking at a 7-11 will be the kick in the ass he needs.

Not saying it's likely, but it is possible.

I don't know if the issue is motivation... I just haven't seen him demonstrate that he has the physical capability to beat the man across from him with either speed or strength or technique. He just gets swallowed up time after time.

I posted a couple of pre-draft quotes from scouts and that was kind of the knock on this guy. The fact that not one team even added him to their PS is pretty telling.

He's awful. Focused on him in pre-season games, and dude is just terrible. About the only thing he can do is push the tackle, but has no other moves and no agility to get around the guy in front of him. Lewis was far more active and showed more in every game, so of course, we let him go and keep this stiff.

And you know they will activate him at some point during the season. Guys a bust time to move on.

This season will rise or fall on MEJ and Vandy. Can they bring pressure and disruption up the middle to give Mack the openings to get to the QB. We have nobody in the secondary or at LB the will be able to hold coverage for any length of time. They'll also need to be stout holding the running games in check as well.

SMH, we were heading in the right direction.

Ellis' playing playing well would be huge too.

Most savvy analysts are now up on the issues with Raiders poor defense

Listening now to Herm Edwards calling out the Raiders D as the impediment to Raiders ability to pass defense
