Del Rio's contract was reportedly worth 4-5 million per year.... with some of the most knowledgeable people in the league saying most of it was not guaranteed.
But we're going to waterboard ourselves with this it-was-guaranteed-for-6-million-per-year nonsense? At least we don't let a good fairy tale get in the way of the truth.
Nobody outside of Del Rio and his agent will know how much of that contract was guaranteed.... but if you read between the lies.... everything points to very little of it being guaranteed.
- When Davis gifted Del Rio with the extension in the middle of his contract, Del Rio didn't exactly have the kind of leverage to earn 10M/year. If Del Rio didn't have the leverage to earn 10M/year, do you really think he had the leverage to pull all-guaranteed? My best guess.... Davis offered him a higher annual salary and a nice signing bonus in exchange for less guaranteed on the back end. Coming off a 12-4 season, Del Rio likely had a strong enough sense of over-confidence to take it.
- Davis has been chasing Gruden for years. Do you really think Davis would go all-guaranteed with any coach when he was prepared to cut bait the second Gruden says he's coming back? This is the same Davis that worked Sheldon Adelson. I highly doubt Davis got worked on this. I'm pretty confident he structured Del Rio's extension with the idea that Gruden might be returning sooner rather than later.....
- Now Del Rio is already back on the job market looking to land a coordinator..... demotion? That doesn't sound like a guy who is sitting on 6M/year severance. That sounds like a guy who got next to nothing and has bills to pay. Has anybody heard anything from Jeff Fisher? Fisher got real guaranteed money and is sitting on his couch getting paid. So Del Rio would rather bust ass working as a DC for a rookie coach with a broken roster, rather than sit on his couch and get paid? I'm not buying that for a second.
