Sr. Bowl

The start of FA is fun too, although for us it's rather disappointing usually.

Gru loves vets, though, as much as Reggie loves bargain-basement specials.

It will be interesting to see who prevails in FA.

Might be a win, win. Red has been great at structuring contracts, so if Gruden identifies a player Red will be able to structure that deal in a way we can get out of it. And I wouldn't say Red likes bargain basement, we've got Hudson and KO on huge deals at the time, paid Sean Smith, Bruce Irvin as well.

This past year not so much, but I wouldn't call Reggie a bargain basement shopper as a whole.

Obviously not as popular as the Sr. Bowl, but I figured I'd go ahead and post the roster. It has a few names I like quite a bit. I highlighted a few names I'm interested in hearing more about

Also Raiders TE coach Bobby Johnson is HC of the West, so that's always good too.

Notes from 1st day of practice at the East West Shrine game.

http://draftanalyst.com/shrine-practice-monday-report

Those Who Impressed

Linden Stephens/CB/Cincinnati: Stephens got off to a shaky start in drills but looked good in 7-on-7s and full scrimmage. He quickly transitions off the line and had the speed to stay step for step with receivers downfield. He made several nice plays on the ball throughout the afternoon.

Deatrick Nichols/CB/South Florida: I was incredibly impressed with Nichols' quickness and ability to burst to the ball out of his plant. He’s explosive and has enough speed to play at the next level. Nichols made several nice plays when lined up over the slot receiver.

Avonte Maddox/CB/Pittsburgh: Maddox was another who looked good though he did it from start to finish. He was terrific in drills then carried the momentum over in one-on-one’s and full scrimmage. Maddox is short but could be a nickel back who plays over the slot receiver at the next level.

Marcell Frazier/DE/Missouri: Frazier is an intimidating-looking lineman who imposed his will on opponents throughout the afternoon. He's quick and very, very athletic. Frazier stunned blockers in one-on-one drills and had his moments in full scrimmage.

Kentavius Street/DE/North Carolina State: From the first repetition he took, Street had opponents playing back on their heels. He has an amazing first step, showed great edge speed and beat up bigger blockers.

Deadrin Senat/DT/South Florida: Senat made a lot of money for himself today. He’s a short, squatty lineman with great lower body power, which he used to destroy opponents. He easily held the point against double-team blocks or bull rushed one-on-one blockers off the line. I don’t think he will be a great playmaker at the next level, but he’s definitely a gap occupier who can collapse the pocket.

Chase Edmonds/RB/Fordham: Edmonds was the class of the ball carriers today. He showed a lot of shiftiness and the ability to pick and choose his spots as well as create yardage on the inside. He possesses the speed and agility to turn the perimeter and looked incredibly natural catching the ball. He also ran with an aggressive style today.

Gregory Senat/T/Wagner: Senat looked as athletic as any lineman who suited up this afternoon. He was fluid, moved well on his feet and displayed a great deal of agility. He tipped the scales at 294 pounds but looks as though he has a great deal of growth potential.

Who Didn’t Impress

Ja'Von Rolland-Jones/LB/Arkansas State: I was a bit surprised, as Rolland-Jones looked lost at times. He struggled finding the ball and was often easily washed from the action by a single blocker.

Quinton Flowers/QB/South Florida: Flowers sprayed his throws all over the place. If he wants a shot at the next level, it will be at running back and not as a signal caller.

Miami’s Chad Thomas producing a great first practice. Setting his edge, handling OTs in the run game.

The Oakland Raiders are already doing their research ahead of the 2018 NFL Draft, and apparently, have a few names circled for interviews at the East-West Shrine Game.

As Charlie Campbell of Walter Footballreported, Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie held an interview with Virginia Tech cornerback Brandon Facyson on Monday afternoon. It goes without saying that the Raiders are going to likely address the cornerback position either in the draft or free agency, and could opt to make a few big changes in their secondary.

Facyson is an interesting prospect, as he had an impressive eight passes defensed and five interceptions as a freshman in 11 games. Throughout his 51 games with the Hokies, he had 131 combined tackles, 39 passes defensed, nine tackles for loss, five interceptions and three forced fumbles. His 39 career passes defensed rank as the second-most in the ACC and seventh-most in all of NCAA since 2005, per Sports-Reference.com.

Obviously, things are still in the very early stages, but Facyson unquestionably has a knack for getting his hands on the ball and could be a nice addition to the Raiders secondary as a potential late-round draft pick.

Currently, Walter Football has him listed as a sixth round-undrafted prospect at this point

Well that's concerning.

Y'all want me to focus on anyone specific next week?

Mason Rudolph (foot) is scratching from @seniorbowl and Nebraska’s Tanner Lee, who holds plenty of intrigue, takes that QB spot for next week, per sources

So you're going huh. I'll give you two names that have some 1st round buzz, but are small school guys. Marcus Davenport DE (I know we've talked a bit about him) and Chukwuma Okorafor, OT . Another name for my personal interest is Jaylen Samuels from South Carolina. I'm not sure if he'll be with the WR/TE's or RB/FB's.

Not for certain yet, but I'm leaning that way. Already have my "credentials" and a place to crash lined up. Might as well go.

UPDATE: Senior Bowl rosters will be released this afternoon. A few recent scratches and names who will NOT be on those rosters:

WR Anthony Miller
DT Maurice Hurst
LB Rashaan Evans
CB Anthony Averett
QB Mason Rudolph

Hmm... guess I'm not the only one that wants to see these two guys.

Marcus Davenport is most intriguing defensive player at Senior Bowl

The defensive player I am most intrigued to see next week is UTSA defensive end Marcus Davenport. There’s a lot to like about Davenport‘s skill set. Listed at 6-foot-7 and 255 pounds, Davenport is a long, athletic edge defender who has blossomed during his senior season.

A contributor since his freshman year, Davenport’s production has steadily increased every year and he played the best football of his career as a senior. After producing 67 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks in 13 games as a junior, Davenport had 55 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks in his senior campaign.

While Davenport has been impressive against Power 5 schools during his career, the opportunity to work with NFL coaching to maximize his traits could lead to a monster week in Mobile. There are already first round whispers surrounding Davenport and those can turn into roars with a strong Senior Bowl week performance.

I wrote about his upside in November and can’t wait to scout him in person.

Chukwuma Okorafor is most intriguing offensive prospect at Senior Bowl

I recently profiled Ohio State OT Jamarco Jones as an underappreciated offensive tackle prospect and the same is true for Western Michigan’s Chukwuma Okorafor.

The first thing that stands out when watching Okorafor is his prototypical frame. Listed at 6-foot-6 and 330 pounds, he is what NFL team’s are looking for in terms of length and build. For his size, he moves very well with good balance. His functional strength throughout his frame shows up in all aspects of his blocking. There is rarely a moment where he looses a battle because of a power disadvantage.

The strength of his game is how strong he is at the point of attack to uncoil and move bodies. He dominates in one-on-one drive blocks, especially against MAC competition. He couples his power components with good bend and hand placement to maximize his strength.

His length, nimble feet and ability to mirror pass rushers makes him a candidate to be a blindside protector in the NFL.

I anticipate a meteoric rise in the positive buzz surrounding Okorafor after next week.
