Sources: Giants, Johnny Cueto agree to 6-year, $130M deal

The San Francisco Giants have reached an agreement on a six-year, $130 million deal with right-hander Johnny Cueto, sources told ESPN. The deal, which features an opt-out for the pitcher after the second year, is pending a physical, sources said.

The Giants, who previously signed free agent Jeff Samardzija to a five-year, $90 million contract in early December, have furthered strengthened a rotation that already included Madison Bumgarner, Matt Cain and Jake Peavy. Cueto was the top starter left on the free-agent market this winter.

Cincinnati Reds and Kansas City Royals. The Royals acquired Cueto from the Reds in a July non-waiver deadline trade, and he recovered from a disappointing regular season in Kansas City (4-7 with a 4.76 ERA in 13 starts) to make a significant contribution to the Royals' World Series run.

Since 2010, Cueto's aggregate 2.87 ERA ranks third among MLB starters (minimum 900 innings pitched) behind Clayton Kershaw and Adam Wainwright.

Cueto turned down a reported six-year, $120-126 million offer in November from the Arizona Diamondbacks, who quickly shifted course and signed marquee right-hander Zack Greinke to a six-year, $206.5 million contract. The Los Angeles Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals were among the clubs that expressed interest in Cueto, but the momentum gradually appeared to shift toward San Francisco in recent days.

Big-league clubs have gone on a spending rampage on free-agent pitchers this offseason. With David Price (Boston), Greinke, Cueto and Jordan Zimmermann (Detroit) leading the way, teams have already invested about $890 million in starters this winter.

    Things shaping up nicely!!! @hawaiianboy @Madturk @doug7dust

    :(

Tomilson booted two DPs against Dodgers that likely cost them the games. In addition to just pitching like ass.

Tomlinson cost them a game last week by botching a DP ball and a couple last night. Panik botched one as well. Bum has looked mediocre his first two starts. He'll get it together.

I'm in the process of trying to get a refund on the advanced World Series tickets I bought.

I really don't see why they insist on making teams play the games.

Man, so I haven't watched baseball in years and then my wife of all people suddenly gets into the Giants and wanting me to watch with her so she can learn the game. Typically I'm an East Bay guy but I'm like, what the fuck, I might as well support a team that gives enough of a shit to get a stadium deal done and isn't threatening to move every other week (get enough of that already). My daughters were all "dad, why can't we root for a team everyone else likes for once" (Raiders and Warriors over the years, poor kids). So now I'm watching the games and they're getting their asses handed to them left and right. Shoulda stuck to my guns with the god damn A's.

Cueto might be the best pitcher they've got.

Bums coming around too. Cueto's a stud. If they can get anything from Peavy or Cain, they have a shot. Need a closer in the worst way. Casilla is a head case

Second time in three outings he comes in with the bases empty and loads the bases in the 9th inning.

    Nice closer. #Goodbye

Reminds me of Brian Wilson. Same shit. Wilson did have a way of getting out of his own jams but yeah, the drama!
