Good move... Maybe the young guy will see that we play much better offensively when we go at a fast pace... Carr is a rhythm thrower, no accident that he's way more effective when playing in an aggressive two minute/hurry up offense... The offense was way too stagnant in first halves this year... hopefully we'll lose a lot of that sideways shit to the flat as well...

I've always been in the camp that winning and losing is mostly dependent upon the quality of the players you have ..., sure great coaches are a huge plus, but even the great Bill Belichick would have struggled to consistently win games with the piss poor rosters we've trotted out over the last decade plus. Just my opinion, but if we take a significant step backwards next year, it will be related more to injuries than changes in the coaching staff. That being said, I agree with you about Norton ..., nothing suggests he has what it takes to be a successful DC. If Jack/Red bring him back, you kinda have to expect more of the same ..., guys out of position, poor adjustments, and what often looks like a lack of preparation.

So you're not a fan of those WR screens that never work?

    Welcome to Club Downing.

It just shouldn't be half your passing game... The stuff where we have guys running to the sideline and catching the ball with their backs to the defense is what drives me nuts...

Ideally, I want little dudes running free over the middle after their defender gets picked. What, that sounds just like the Patriots! ;)

So, Musgrave's O was 27th in average yards (in the air) per pass (7.48 yards). Yet, Musgrave's O led the NFL in the frequency of TDs among passes thrown over 20 yards (15%). Sure would be nice to get a real deep threat.

If there are going to be changes to the offense, it sure would be nice if they included: 1) less WR screens; 2) more Olawale; 3) more screens to midgets, and less shotgun draws; and 4) an acknowledgement that there is a position called TE, and once in while they actually catch balls.

One aspect of the offense I did like was the use of the 6th lineman or jumbo packages. I love the power football set. Bring in Lee Smith or Kirkland and play smash mouth.

Agreed. It was dump founding how we could more effectively exploit this package the last two weeks, save one short TD drive against Houston.

Don't kid yourself, Derek was involved in this decision. I know that mostly Musgrave has sucked as an OC, so I'm inclined to think most of what happened here was in spite of him. Thus, you roll with what your QB wants on this. Let's not act like Musgrave was some genius out there. We'll see how it plays out next year, but I'm not losing sleep about this. More concerned with that shitty defense and how we fix that.

Now who thinks it was Musgrave's brilliant prowess on the greaseboard that was propelling this offense. If you do, I want some of that shit you're smoking just as a contact high to get through the off-season. You let dumb people like that go find another job when you know you have other hungry people who can do the same job in house. Have zero problems with this.

Ten things to know about new Raiders offensive coordinator Todd Downing

    1. Downing was born in Eden Prairie, Minn., a suburb of Minneapolis.
    2. He played high school ball at Eden Prairie High for Mike Grant, the son of Bud Grant, the Hall of Fame head coach for the Minnesota Vikings
    3. Using that Grant connection, Downing became a public relations intern for the Vikings at age 19 to get his foot in the door in the NFL. He attended the University of Minnesota at the same time and also spent summers playing semi-pro ball for the Minnesota Maulers.
    4. Downing earned himself a coaching internship a year later and signed his first coaching contract at age 21. He was with the Vikings until 2005 under Mike Tice, before spending the next three seasons with the St. Louis Rams.
    5. He was hired as an offensive quality control coach by the Detroit Lions the same season they drafted Matthew Stafford No. 1 overall in 2009.
    6. Downing was elevated to quarterbacks coach in 2011 and held that role with the Lions until 2013. Overall, he spent five season in Detroit working under Jim Schwartz.
    7. He moved on to the Buffalo Bills in 2014 under Doug Marrone. They went 9-7 with EJ Manuel starting the first four games before Kyle Orton started the next 12 games and threw for 3,018 yards, 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
    8. Downing came to Oakland in 2015 under Jack Del Rio, reuniting him with Tice, whom Del Rio hired as his offensive line coach.
    9. He was named Pro Football Focus’ quarterbacks coach of the year for his work during his first season with the Raiders.
    10. Only three current offensive coordinators — Washington’s Sean McVay, Chicago’s Dowell Loggains and Detroit’s Jim Bob Cooter — are younger than Downing.

He isn't. I think it would have all come out together if it was. Norton will get more of a pass because JDR is clearly involved in that side of the ball imo, and also we didn't have major pieces of the defense this year. If anybody gets clipped, I'd expect it to be the DB coach.

All I got out of this, is that Detroit has some dude named Jim Bob Cooter!

And his connection to Tice may help to keep him around.

Not like JDR was unaware of the game plans....agree it was a $ choice...give the money to Tice.

Who signed off on a backdoor screen with a redshirted QB?
    Not upset but very surprised...
