NFL Combine Thread

Per Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, LA Tech EDGE Jaylon Ferguson has been stripped of his Combine invitation due being convicted of simple battery for a fight at McDonalds as a freshman and a separate public intoxication charge. #NFLDraft
Fucking PC police.

I was wondering why I kept seeing him late in rd 2 in most mock drafts... kids still got talent... you dont get 16 sacks by luck...
Might also be lack if bend, lack of flexibility/agility/acceleration/speed, lack of success against competition at Senior Bowl.

Chris Landry has always been one of my favorite draft guys- he's real solid- he gets lots of inside info and he's not afraid to share them- Heres a OT article about Gil Brandts induction that I found pretty interesting and wanted to post... below the article is a podcast with Chris about the Flacco trade and other shit.. you might not dig it.. but I always find shit like this interesting

MANY SCOUTING VETERANS PRIVATELY SNICKERING AT GIL BRANT'S HOF SELECTION

Among the events that take place at the Super Bowl each year is the announcement of each Hall of Fame class. This year in the contributor category, the well publicized Gil Brandt was selected.

In recent discussions with many old time NFL Scouts who worked with Gil snickered at the thought that he would get in over many more productive "Football Men". They site that Gil often took credit for things that he had no involvement in.

From my viewpoint, I prefer to wish all inductees congratulations and instead focus on those who are deserving but have fallen short due to lack of knowledge by the voters, who are media members and others that truly don't don't who does what in an organization.

When it comes to a player, everyone can at least see what a player does in a game. For a head coach, people will look at the wins, championships and the overall leadership job he has done. And, for the most part, it should be an easy process.

When it comes to front office people, it becomes much more difficult as only those of us inside the walls of the facilities truly knows who does what.

Very often, those that do the best job of self-promoting and seeking the limelight usually get the nod over the guys that were the real reasons for a club's success.

Such is the case with Gil Brandt many of the people he has worked with have privately told me.

Gil's outside reputation is that he was a scouting innovator. Inside the Cowboys organization at that time, all of the scouts insist that the innovations come from head coach Tom Landry (no relation.) Like he invented the umbrella coverage, the flex defense, the shot gun set offensively Landry also came up with the idea of getting a computer guy involved with the scouting process of college players.

Brandt's background was not in football. He was a baby photographer who had a personal connection to Rams executive Tex Schramm. Scramm hired Brandt as a Rams scout. Understand back then a scout was merely a recruiter and not an evaluator. Gil was pure salesman in his role . When Schramm got the initial general manager job with the Cowboys, he hired Brandt to work for him.

Known as a solid organizer and willing to do a variety of duties, Brandt was responsible for organizing the scout;s scouting reports so coach Landry could make the draft decisions. According to people who worked on the Cowboys coaching and scouting staff, it was coach Landry who actually made all the decisions with input from the scout.

But, according to Brandt, he made all the picks and trades for the organization. Brandt's critics with the Cowboys organization at the time like to suggest that Brandt has been very expressive about what "he" did after both Tom Landry and Tex Schramm have passed away.

One of the reasons I have not interest in sharing this in publication is that I did not work for the Cowboys organization and in many respects, there are different sides to a story. I do know that when you listen to Gil talk about players, you see clearly that he is not from a football background and just repeating what other have told him.

This is the reason why Brandt was known around the NFL as a "Telephone Scout". By that they meant, put Gil in a room with film and a pencil/paper and he'd have no clue who could play or not. But, put him in a room with telephone and he'd acquire the information from others and have all the details.

Blessed with a photographic memory, Gil could always tell you about what the prospects mother and father did for a living and how many siblings he had. But ask him about what type of route a quarterback threw best, or what block a lineman struggled with or what technique a defensive back played and he would just go into some filibustering comments to cover up his lack of football acumen.

Since Gil was the one that cultivated relationships with the media and came across as the all-knowing, he became a pet like friend within the media community.

Now, many others in the NFL tended to be envious of the Cowboys. They had more than twice the budget as other teams and would often give out elaborate gifts to college coaches and even hire out of work college coaches to help them at that time get inside information on prospects and often help to recruit undrafted free agents.

Be that as it may, the Cowboys under Schramm and Landry with Brandt assistance ran a good program that won a couple of Super Bowls. And, they were innovators. Whomever was responsible.

I'm pretty meh about this years class overall.. I feel like they're pressing to fill out the picks personally.

if there aren't enough guys legitimately qualified it's ok to just send 2-3 guys in a given year.

Some team is going to hang 3 years on his shoulders . . . knees. He’ll have a few electric moments. Then some body will take him out.

Gruden and Mayock have a very busy week of scouting rookies and tampering with FA’s this week.

NFL teams received notice that Florida OT Jawaan Taylor has been evaluated and diagnosed with a mild distal hamstring strain and Dr. James Andrews advised him to not perform at this week’s combine, per source. https://t.co/cqlYKMgiUv
